Let Me Go, Mr. Howard Chapter 172

6 min 2 views

At that moment, the truck driver found himself trapped in the driver's seat, unable to escape—which worked perfectly for Teddy.

He raised his arm, resting his elbow on the driver's window, while casually wiping blood from his left eye with his other hand and flicking it away.

Tapping lightly on the glass, Teddy flashed a cold smile. "Sir, you're in serious trouble. Do you understand?"

Seeing Teddy so animated despite the crash, the truck driver was stunned. But his eyes darted sideways, and he immediately began pleading innocence.

"My brakes failed! I couldn't stop!"

Teddy raised an eyebrow and pulled out his phone. He dialed 911, then looked up with a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Doesn't matter what failed. Trouble is trouble, mister. You are finished."

Shortly after, police cars arrived at the scene.

Teddy now sat in an ambulance while a nurse treated his wound, while the truck driver remained trapped in his vehicle.

"Sir, did you report this incident?" A young officer approached, adjusting his hat in a simplified gesture of respect.

Teddy opened his right eye to glance at him, then closed it again. "Let me speak to your captain."

The young officer frowned, about to respond when his captain walked over from the truck. He immediately saluted, "Captain, this gentleman asked to see you."

The captain looked over, and upon seeing Teddy's face, his eyebrow twitched and his heart began to race.

"Lieutenant Parker."

His legs trembled slightly as he immediately realized this was no ordinary accident.

Hearing this title, Teddy opened his eyes—the wound at the corner of his eye now freshly stitched. Though still red and swollen, at least it had stopped bleeding.

"I remember you're Craig," Teddy said calmly, grabbing some nearby gauze to wipe the blood from his face.

Captain Craig nodded.

"Investigate who would dare come after me—or were they targeting Mr. Sebastian Howard, or perhaps Mr. George Howard..." Teddy paused, smiling slightly before asking, "Do you think this was an accident?"

Craig couldn't guarantee anything, but he had to respond. "This couldn't possibly be an accident. However, we'll need to complete the investigation to determine exactly what happened."

His answer was diplomatic. Teddy gave him a look before waving him off and getting into the car that had come to pick him up.

"Mr. Howard," Teddy said immediately after entering the car, calling Sebastian.

He leaned back against the headrest as the aftermath of the crash suddenly hit him—his temples throbbing, vision blurring, his strength diminishing with each movement.

"How is it?" Sebastian stepped out of the hospital room, one hand in his pocket as he stood before the floor-to-ceiling window. His eyes lowered to watch falling leaves in the courtyard below, his voice deep.

Teddy frowned, fighting through his headache. "It's identical to the method used when Ms. Myers was attacked. Definitely the same person."

"I see." Sebastian's response was brief. After a pause, he added, "Thank you for your hard work. Go to the hospital for a complete examination."

With that, he ended the call.

The window glass reflected his hard profile. That momentary flash of concern quickly vanished, completely overshadowed by the bottomless coldness in his eyes.

Before he could lower his phone, the screen lit up again with an incoming call, the ringtone sounding unusually urgent.

It was Orion.

He swiped to answer, and Orion's rapid-fire voice immediately came through, his urgency affecting the listener, "Quick update—Aquilonia's people are making moves, looks like they're heading your way. Prepare yourselves."

Before Sebastian could respond, the call disconnected.

The call had come and gone with unusual haste, the dial tone still lingering with an inexplicable sense of urgency, as if a second longer would expose something to unwanted eyes.

Sebastian's gaze darkened as his lips parted in a silent sigh.

During the examination, though Scarlett had company, she clearly noticed Sebastian's distraction.

She glanced at him occasionally, only to find him repeatedly refreshing his phone screen, making her wonder if he was waiting for a message from Adeline.

Someone helped Scarlett lift her clothing to expose her still-flat stomach.

As the coupling gel was applied once more and the probe gently pressed against her skin, a physician spoke softly, "Ms. Seymour, look—this is the gestational sac. Your baby is right inside."

Her finger pointed to a small dot on the screen. As Scarlett turned to look, still searching for it, she heard Sebastian chuckle beside her.

She turned to him with furrowed brows. "What's so funny?"

"Nothing," Sebastian replied, though his lips remained curved. "I'm just looking at our child."

His tone carried clear anticipation for this baby.

Scarlett should have been happy, but remembering Adeline's words, she gripped the fabric beside her, feeling anything but joy.

The prenatal examination concluded relatively quickly.

When the pregnancy medical file was handed to her, Scarlett was eating a bread roll.

The nurse gently opened the booklet, pointing to a small dot. "See, this is what your baby looks like right now."

Scarlett stared at the tiny dot. Without even hands or feet, how could it be called a baby?

As she pondered this, her eyes followed the nurse's finger to the round head of the fetus. The nurse continued, "Though the organs aren't fully developed yet, some important ones have already entered a rapid development phase."

"This is the head. Look, here are the eye sockets, and here..."

As the nurse continued her detailed explanation, Scarlett felt increasingly anxious.

This tiny organism was rapidly developing inside her and would one day be born as a living, breathing infant.

She pressed her lips together as the soft bread melted in her mouth.

Sebastian leaned closer, placing his hand over her abdomen. "Scar, this is our child."

Something stirred in Scarlett's heart. Though reluctant to admit it, his words rang true.

For the first time, she felt no rejection toward this baby. The feeling was strange—a mixture of anticipation and fear, yet genuine longing.

On the return journey, Scarlett didn't see Teddy. Though she found it odd, she didn't think much of it.

It wasn't until the next day, when she arrived at work to find an unfamiliar bodyguard at the door, that she thought to ask about Teddy's whereabouts. "Is Mr. Parker no longer coming?"

The bodyguard, assuming Scarlett didn't trust him, immediately pledged his loyalty. "I've been assigned by Mr. Howard and will do everything in my power to ensure your safety!"

Scarlett waved dismissively, unconcerned about his dedication. "No, I'm just curious where Mr. Parker went."

"Mr. Parker has some personal matters to attend to and needs a few days off," the bodyguard answered carefully, mindful of Sebastian's instructions.

"I see."

Since Scarlett wasn't particularly concerned about the matter, she dropped it after these few questions.

Two days later, Teddy returned from the hospital.

He immediately resumed his regular duties. When Scarlett noticed the wound at his temple, she was surprised and suspicious.

"Mr. Parker, what happened to your face?"
