Let Me Go, Mr. Howard Chapter 238
To Chris's ears, this conversation sounded perfectly normal.
However, since Scarlett felt something was off, there must indeed be something suspicious about it.
He frowned, fingers lightly tapping the sofa armrest, his tone steady. "Given Michael's personality, it does seem unlikely he'd say something like that."
Though Chris wasn't familiar with Michael personally, the man was famous enough that Chris had grown up hearing adults mention him constantly. From their scattered comments, he could piece together Michael's character.
A gentleman refined to perfection—no matter how low he might have fallen before, now that he'd reclaimed his lost power, he shouldn't develop that kind of self-pitying mindset.
Chris remembered how Michael had returned to the country and seized control of the Seymour family assets with lightning speed.
Sebastian had naturally helped with that.
Hearing Chris speak this way, Scarlett immediately nodded, the excitement of finding validation making her nod eagerly. "Exactly! So something really must have happened, right?"
But Chris truly didn't know what was happening in Sovereign City.
Hearing the urgency in Scarlett's voice, he quickly reassured her, "Don't worry, I'll look into what's going on."
Listening to his comfort, Scarlett realized she'd gotten carried away emotionally.
Though she now knew her true origins, she still considered Michael family.
"Okay, I'll treat you to dinner when I get back." She smiled.
Chris chuckled. "Deal, just don't know when you'll actually return."
The moment he hung up, someone knocked on the locker room door. Chris's smile vanished as he looked over.
Dennis entered, opening the door and leaning back to look left and right. After confirming no one had followed, he stepped into the locker room.
"Chris, why are you sneaking off again? Careful, or the coach won't even let you qualify for the backup race."
His face was full of concern, his tone disapproving.
"He wouldn't dare bench me." Chris snorted coldly, completely dismissing the coach's threats. Propping himself up with his hands, he spoke carelessly, "Before, I skipped a friendly match and broke regulations—getting suspended was normal. But now? It's just training."
Hearing this, Dennis shook his head helplessly. "You're just doing whatever you want because of your talent."
Chris didn't argue with that assessment. He just smiled smugly, then remembered what Scarlett had asked about and quickly questioned Dennis, "You've been staying in Sovereign City recently, right? Has anything happened lately?"
Being suddenly asked about this caught even Dennis, who had a good relationship with Chris, off guard.
Still, he just muttered, "Why are you asking about this?" before immediately thinking back. "Recently, probably nothing, but not long ago..."
Dennis thought of the rumors that had been circulating wildly recently, his brow instantly furrowing.
He didn't really want to say anything, but making that expression made it obvious that something was wrong.
So under Chris's coercion and persuasion, Dennis finally spoke reluctantly, "Some time ago, someone spread rumors that Scarlett was pregnant with Mr. Howard's child, and that she went abroad to..."
He didn't finish his sentence because Chris's expression was truly terrifying.
As a friend, Chris naturally knew this rumor was true.
But so few people knew about it—Scarlett hadn't even told Michael. Who could have leaked the information?
Chris frowned, his body that had leaned forward in shock slowly settling back, his back against the sofa as his fingers slowly curled, rubbing against his lips.
Seeing those dark eyes, Dennis felt a chill in his heart. Thinking of the responses from the Howard family and Michael's side, he spoke carefully.
"But Mr. Seymour and the Howard family..."
Once again, Dennis didn't finish his sentence.
Chris snorted, shooting him a cold glance. "Complete nonsense. She went to study abroad."
"Right." Dennis was genuinely stunned, but his eyes showed more surprise and joy. "Mr. Seymour and the others said the same thing."
Chris didn't respond.
He crossed his arms over his chest, his expression still troubled.
If this kind of news had reached Michael's ears, it would indeed cause him to change slightly.
But how could he tell Scarlett about this?
Though Scarlett had already had the abortion and no longer carried the child, still... There was no way he could tell Scarlett about this, right?
Chris suddenly developed a headache.
He raised his hand to scratch his hair, then finally leaned back completely. "Forget it, pretend this never happened."
Before Dennis could understand what he meant, he saw Chris pull out his phone and type rapidly. After a few minutes, he shoved the phone in his pocket and stood up. "Come on, let's go train."
...
Maple Valley Villa.
After hanging up with Chris, Scarlett had been lying on the window seat and dozed off to an afternoon nap.
When she woke up, Libbie was sitting on the sofa behind her, knitting. Hearing movement from the window seat, she looked up and smiled when she saw Scarlett awake. "Ms. Seymour, did you sleep well?"
As Scarlett sat up, she discovered the throw blanket had been replaced with a thicker, softer comforter, and even a long pillow had been placed behind her back.
Knowing Libbie had arranged all this, Scarlett smiled. "Very comfortably."
Her voice was soft and still carried the drowsiness of just waking up.
Libbie had already set down her knitting and brought over a glass of warm water. "Have some water."
She was indeed thirsty after waking up, so Scarlett didn't hesitate to take it and drink in large gulps.
"Mr. Howard called four minutes ago. Would you like to call him back?" Libbie stood beside her, watching her drink. As the glass was nearly empty, she suddenly asked.
Scarlett paused, and though somewhat hesitant, she nodded.
Seeing her nod, Libbie smiled and immediately went to get the phone.
Ever since Sebastian had agreed to let her terminate the pregnancy, Scarlett's opinion of him had shifted somewhat. After all, if he'd really wanted to keep the child, she would have had no power to resist.
The call was already connected when the phone was handed to Scarlett.
"Just woke up?"
Sebastian's voice through the receiver carried a hint of hoarseness—the familiar vocal change that came after smoking.
Since Scarlett's pregnancy, she hadn't heard that tone from him.
Thinking that Sebastian might have been smoking, Scarlett frowned slightly. "Are you in a bad mood?"
Sebastian's motion of bringing the cigarette to his lips paused, followed by a soft chuckle. "That obvious?"
The low laughter seemed to echo right beside her ear.
Scarlett pressed her lips together. "You've been smoking."
The cigarette held between his lips was removed after just one second. "My phone has that feature now?"
