Let Me Go, Mr. Howard Chapter 163
Adeline treated Scarlett as if she were completely irrelevant—the kind of subtle dismissal that cuts deepest.
Sebastian's gaze shifted to Scarlett, who had turned her head away. He noticed her gently biting her lower lip and his brow furrowed imperceptibly, though his voice remained even.
"Yes. You're well-informed."
Adeline missed his subtle tone entirely and moved closer with a smile. "I heard it from Mr. George Howard when I visited the Howard Manor this afternoon."
Sebastian's gaze dropped to her smiling face. "I see you've developed quite the relationship with my grandfather."
"Of course. I'd do anything to marry you—after all, Mr. George Howard is my family too." Adeline deliberately chose these words, knowing Sebastian avoided public displays of affection.
She brushed against the edge of his clothing as she spoke, watching for Scarlett's reaction.
Recently, under Michael's influence, Scarlett's prominence in Sovereign City had been growing, perhaps even surpassing Adeline's initial return.
This irritated Adeline deeply. But she knew Scarlett's secret, and couldn't resist these little jabs, hoping to break her spirit.
Scarlett, however, seemed unaffected. She was turned to the side, chatting and laughing with Chris as if she hadn't heard a word.
Seeing her strategy fail, Adeline pressed her lips together, not bothering to hide her frustration.
Sebastian discreetly pulled his arm away and led the way into the elevator.
Inside the hospital room, Sylvia lay in bed with her forehead wrapped in bandages while someone applied makeup to her face.
"Syl, remember to pretend you're sleeping when they arrive," Tiffany reminded her, munching on fruit from a platter. "Don't slip up."
Sylvia didn't speak, just raised her hand in an OK gesture.
Moments later, Sebastian's group arrived. As they pushed open the door, they heard Tiffany's sharp rebuke from inside.
"It's been this long and you still don't know who did this? What am I paying you for?"
Sebastian, at the front, didn't react, but Scarlett, still in the doorway, jumped at the sudden outburst.
"You okay?" Chris immediately asked from beside her.
Scarlett shook her head, unable to ignore the cramping pain in her abdomen. Conscious of everyone present, she could only secretly rub her stomach. "I'm fine."
She didn't realize Adeline had turned and caught the gesture, her eyes darkening with calculation as they followed Scarlett's hand to her abdomen.
After her outburst, Tiffany noticed Sebastian's group entering. She lowered her head, wiped away tears, and when she looked up again, her eyes were appropriately reddened, her voice trembling just the right amount.
"Oh, Sebi's here. Please, sit."
She started to rise but swayed dramatically, falling back into her chair.
Sebastian stepped forward to steady her. "Mrs. Myers, you must take care of yourself."
Tiffany seized the opportunity to grasp his arm, discreetly tracing the number "2" on his forearm. Hidden by Sebastian's body, she gave him a meaningful look while wailing, "My poor Syl! Who would target her like this?"
Sebastian bent closer, removing his hand to pat her back gently. "This won't go unpunished."
Adeline approached, her voice gentle. "Mrs. Myers, Sylvia has good fortune on her side. She'll be alright."
She had hoped to gain favor during Tiffany's moment of vulnerability, but Tiffany dabbed her eyes with a tissue and snapped, "I don't need you stating the obvious! If you have nothing useful to say, keep quiet!"
Adeline was stunned into silence. Unable to make a scene at such a delicate moment, she could only force a smile.
Scarlett and Chris approached next.
"Mrs. Myers," Chris greeted her first.
The Wright family maintained neutral but cordial relations with the Myers family—and with all families in Sovereign City, really. This was largely thanks to Shawn's position.
His rapid rise and steady career had placed him firmly in the district police commissioner's chair—and for the Central District, no less. No family wanted to cross him, and all tried to curry his favor.
But Shawn was diplomatic, maintaining each relationship at precisely the same comfortable distance.
He showed particular courtesy to the Howard family, but otherwise presented the same politely detached face to everyone.
"Chris! How thoughtful of you to visit Syl despite your busy training schedule," Tiffany greeted him warmly.
And for Scarlett, whom she genuinely liked, her face lit up. "Scar, just off work? Everything happened so suddenly with Syl—we couldn't even notify you right away."
Scarlett studied Tiffany for a moment before offering gentle reassurance. "Don't worry about that. Who could have anticipated something like this? How is she doing?"
"The doctors say she hit her head. She won't wake up for a while." As Tiffany spoke, she covered her face and began sobbing again.
Scarlett's face reflected genuine sorrow.
But in her current condition, excessive emotional distress wasn't advisable. Chris quickly changed the subject. "How did this happen?"
"Syl was driving to the company when a truck came out of nowhere, aiming straight for the driver's side! They were clearly trying to kill her!" Tiffany's eyes flashed with murderous intent, as if she wanted to tear the culprit limb from limb.
"Where's that driver now?" Scarlett immediately asked.
Tiffany sniffled. "Still at large. My husband's team is on it—they'll catch him eventually!"
Her pride carried a touch of naivety.
Hidden at the back of the group, Adeline quietly sighed with relief, discreetly sending a message on her phone when no one was looking.
She thought her actions went unnoticed, but Tiffany caught everything. She kept her eyes downcast, a cold glint flashing through them.
The group stayed a while longer. Doctors and nurses came in periodically to check on Sylvia, but none brought good news.
After offering brief comfort, everyone departed.
Once they left, Sylvia—who had been lying motionless—finally moved.
She took a deep breath and clutched her racing heart. "That was terrifying! I thought I wouldn't make it."
"If you couldn't hold out, you could have 'woken up' with amnesia," Tiffany replied casually, clearly experienced in such deceptions.
Sylvia nodded, then hugged her pillow anxiously. "But do we really need to keep this from Scar? After all, she's..."
"You saw what happened to you yesterday," Tiffany cut her off coldly. "Do you think she'd fare any better if she knew the truth?"
Sylvia shook her head, her eyes blinking rapidly until they filled with tears.
"Then when will Scar ever find out the truth?"
