Let Me Go, Mr. Howard Chapter 231
After yesterday's surveillance incident, everyone had ramped up security around the hospital room. Even with Scarlett staying inside the bedroom, a bodyguard remained stationed by the window.
This made Scarlett incredibly uncomfortable.
Her gaze kept drifting involuntarily toward the bodyguard.
Seeing how bothered she was, Libbie could only stay inside to keep her company. Fortunately, there was a fold-out cot in the room that could be opened up for sleeping.
Thankfully, nothing unusual happened during the night.
The next morning, at the time scheduled by the doctor, Scarlett was wheeled into the operating room.
The procedure was a painless abortion. Originally, Scarlett had hoped to choose a regular abortion, but Libbie had vetoed that idea. She believed there was no need for Scarlett to endure the discomfort of a regular procedure. In fact, if it weren't for the fact that the fetus had developed abnormalities due to drug exposure, she wouldn't have agreed to the surgery at all.
Scarlett emerged from the operating room forty minutes later.
When she was wheeled out, she was conscious. The moment the doors opened, she saw Libbie with red-rimmed eyes.
"Ms. Seymour, how are you feeling?"
Libbie rushed over first. Though her voice was steady, her breathing was slightly rapid.
Scarlett could sense some anger in her, though she wasn't sure what had triggered it. She could only smile weakly and say, "Pretty good. No pain."
Though she'd regained consciousness, her voice was still faint and listless.
Hearing this seemed to make Libbie even more emotional. Her voice trembled slightly as she lowered her head and muttered curses under her breath. "It's all that damn bastard's fault! Making Ms. Seymour go through this kind of suffering!"
Though spoken quietly, Scarlett still caught some of it.
She froze for a moment, feeling a warm current flow through her heart. She'd felt a bit cold coming out of the operating room, but seeing this display of care, her whole body suddenly felt warm.
Marco, who had been following behind, also approached. He didn't get too close, maintaining a respectful distance as he spoke.
"Letty, is there anything you'd like to eat?"
Hearing this, Libbie was about to turn and respond when someone else spoke up.
"Ms. Seymour can't have regular food right now. She needs to start with liquids, then progress to soft foods, and gradually transition to normal food."
The speaker was Scarlett's attending physician, who had already changed out of her surgical scrubs and was wearing a white coat as she approached the group.
"How long will that take?" Marco asked.
"It depends on the patient's physical response. Usually, it takes one to two weeks."
Marco emphasized this point to Libbie, since she was currently in charge of Scarlett's meals.
"I know that." Libbie nodded. "Mr. Russo, you forgot—I was the one who took care of Ms. Russo after her C-section."
Hearing this, Marco's expression grew distant for a moment. "Oh, right. Lucia. Yes, you took care of Lucia."
The aftereffects of general anesthesia included drowsiness. Even though Scarlett had regained consciousness and wasn't experiencing any other discomfort, she still felt sleepy after listening to their conversation for a while.
The drowsiness hit suddenly. Scarlett didn't even have time to express that she was getting tired before she fell asleep.
By the time Libbie and the others noticed, she was already sleeping soundly with her head tilted to one side.
No one disturbed her, simply continuing to move forward alongside the gurney.
It was quite a sight—rarely would you see a hospital gurney accompanied by five or six people, three of whom followed at a measured distance wearing conspicuous black suits that clearly marked them as anything but ordinary.
Fortunately, they were moving through private areas of the hospital. The medical staff here were all dedicated to Scarlett's care, so their procession didn't cause any commotion on the way back.
Just as they got Scarlett settled back in her room, Marco received a call from Sebastian.
There was some background noise on Sebastian's end—he seemed to be at some kind of conference, and you could even faintly hear people greeting him nearby.
"How did the surgery go?" Sebastian's question was brief and to the point, asked in Seraphine.
"Everything went smoothly." Marco's response was equally direct.
Their conversation hit a pause, but soon Sebastian's voice came through again. "I've reviewed the information you sent yesterday."
Hearing this, Marco's expression grew more serious. He knew Sebastian never brought things up without reason, so he continued along with his train of thought. "Any progress?"
He and Shane's people had followed those leads all night without finding any new clues. Could Sebastian, all the way in Lumaria, actually have made progress?
His nephew really did have some skills...
However, Sebastian chuckled. "What are you thinking, Uncle Marco? You didn't make any progress, so what progress could I possibly have?"
Marco laughed as well, though he was curious. "Then why bring it up?"
"Nothing major, just that the information got me thinking." Sebastian's tone was calm, and another greeting was mixed into his words. "Hello, Mr. Ramirez."
Marco didn't pay attention to that greeting, just paused for a moment to make sure Sebastian wasn't continuing that conversation before speaking. "Thinking about what?"
"Disabled people are among the easiest groups to locate in any city. Yet you and Shane's people searched there for almost an entire night without any results."
By this point, his meaning was quite clear.
Marco frowned first, then relaxed his brow, though his eyes grew cold. "You're saying he's not actually disabled?"
The information about the suspect being disabled had come from Finn. If that information was false, it could mean Finn might be a spy.
At this thought, Marco immediately glanced at Finn, his gaze sweeping over quickly enough that no one would notice anything suspicious.
Finn was quietly standing by the hospital room door, appearing from the outside to be a competent and dedicated security team leader.
However, thinking about the false information he'd provided, Marco's eyes darkened, and his opinion of Finn dropped considerably.
"Yes, the limp was probably an act." The background noise on Sebastian's end gradually quieted until it was completely silent, making his voice much clearer. "It was just misdirection. No need to waste energy searching for that."
Marco naturally agreed, but Sebastian's words made him uneasy. "I'm planning to gradually replace the room's security."
After he said this, Sebastian quickly responded, "It might not be Finn's fault. He gave Shane the same information."
No one knew about Shane coming to Lumaria.
Even Finn and the others only knew he'd gone to Eldoria.
Marco understood Sebastian's meaning and nodded slightly, though he didn't drop his suspicions entirely. "Got it."
