Let Me Go, Mr. Howard Chapter 50
Sebastian frowned. "Scarlett is the design department's director—"
George slammed his cane against the floor, cutting him off. "Enough! Don't think I don't know you're attracted to that illegitimate daughter's face!"
Silence fell over the study.
"Don't forget your responsibilities," George warned coldly. "I sent her away once, and I can do it again!"
Sebastian took a deep breath. "I have no interest in her. It's just that her talent is exceptional. Grandfather, you'll regret firing her."
"If she's so talented, how has she worked at the Howard Group for five years without a single creation to her name?" George scoffed. "Do as I say."
"Understood." Sebastian lowered his gaze. After a long silence, he added, "If there's nothing else, I'll take my leave."
As Sebastian reached the door, George called after him. "I hear that illegitimate daughter slapped Edith and hasn't apologized."
"I'll handle it," Sebastian replied without turning.
Compared to the Howards' swift response, the Seymour family's reaction was more measured. Besides Edith's theatrical hospital visit, they made no further moves.
When Brianna learned what happened, she was furious and wanted to call Scarlett home for a severe scolding, but David stopped her.
"What? You're taking that illegitimate child's side?" Brianna's eyes reddened with anger. "Look at our Edie, see how she's been bullied!"
The handprint on Edith's delicate skin was particularly obvious.
David looked concerned but shook his head cautiously. "Didn't Edie say Sebastian has taken an interest in Scarlett? If you call her now, you'll only make Sebastian sympathize more with Scarlett instead of our Edie."
"Then what do you suggest?" Brianna asked.
"You've already made a scene at the hospital, so the Howard family must know by now. Let's wait until tomorrow to see their attitude toward Scarlett before deciding our next move."
Edith frowned. "Why should we wait for the Howard family to resolve our family matter?"
"If they handle it, doesn't that show how much they value us?" David gave a cold laugh. "If Scarlett is disciplined by the Howard family, who in this city would want anything to do with her?"
---
The next day, Scarlett slept until noon. The moment she moved, her body felt like it was falling apart—numb, sore, and aching.
"Beast," she cursed through gritted teeth.
After a while, she finally managed to prop herself up. Thankfully, her body had been cleaned the night before, so she didn't feel sticky.
With no work to go to, Scarlett was content to take it easy. After washing up, she lay back down and checked her phone, finding numerous missed calls—some from Tom, others from team members, but most from Brianna.
Ignoring Brianna's calls, she called Tom back.
"Scarlett! Finally reached you!" Tom's voice was almost tearful.
"What's wrong?" she asked, taking a sip of water.
"Haven't you seen this morning's announcement? HR said you have moral issues and fired you!"
Since slapping Edith yesterday, Scarlett had anticipated this. She remained composed, even indifferent. "Okay, I understand."
"You knew about this?" Tom asked, confused by her nonchalance.
"I didn't before, but I do now." Scarlett glanced at the clock—it was almost noon. She put her phone on speaker and began changing clothes.
"How can you be so calm? You've been fired!" Tom stuttered anxiously.
Scarlett slipped on a long dress. "I slapped Edith. How could I not be fired?"
Tom was shocked. Looking around, he lowered his voice. "That must have been satisfying, but now you'll be blacklisted! The Howard Group is claiming moral issues!"
As a Howard employee, Tom understood the company's influence. Anyone blacklisted by them could forget about finding work elsewhere.
Thinking of her upcoming meeting, Scarlett smiled. "Who says I don't have options? Someone's eager to hire me."
"Really? It's not a scam, is it?" Tom asked, surprised but concerned.
"No, the boss talked to me directly. There won't be any problems."
They talked a bit longer before hanging up as Scarlett got into a taxi. She arrived at the café around 12:30 and ordered an Americano and a matcha cake roll.
While eating, her phone rang again. Seeing Brianna's name, she rejected the call and put her phone on silent. Only when she checked the time did she notice Brianna's message:
[If you still want your mother's jewel back, come to the Seymour Villa immediately! Now!]
Scarlett stared at the message for a long time, pressing her lips together in irritation. Using the jewel to threaten her every time was truly disgusting.
"Sweetheart!"
Just as she was lost in thought, Orion's voice came from beside her. She quickly put away her phone and smiled at him. "Mr. Watson."
"So formal! Call me Orion," he smiled as he sat across from her.
"Mr. Watson, let's discuss business," Scarlett replied, her smile unwavering.
"Playing cold? I like it." Orion raised an eyebrow and handed over a document folder. "Take a look. If anything's not to your liking, we can change it."
