Lycan's Mate (His Claim) Chapter 58

Blake's POV

I turned the corner and sped down her street until I reached her house and parked the car quickly on the driveway. I found it really weird that her father's truck wasn't even parked in front of the house. It was indeed Saturday and that meant that he had the day off. Where could he be?

Without a moment of hesitation, I hopped out of the vehicle and closed the door shut behind me. I allowed my advanced sense of hearing to take over as I tried to listen in on any movement inside the house. To my surprise, I found the house eerily quiet, which confused me. Fiona wasn't the type to be hanging out on the weekends, even if we were in Summer break. Seeing that she was one year ahead, she had graduated with me and the rest of the Senior class, so there was no need for her to be anywhere but home, right?

I made my way up the steps towards the porch and tilted my head to see if I was mistaken and had actually looked past the fact that she was possibly sleeping. To my disappointment, there wasn't even the steady rhythm of her breathing in the second floor. She couldn't be down by the lake where her father would go fishing. She would've advised me on the fact that she was going so I could tag along as well. Her father had grown quite fond of me and had even invited me to dinner a few times. It was there that I had discovered how great of a cook our mate truly was, despite her being a vegetarian and all.

I was about to make my way around the house and towards her window until I heard the sound of an engine make its way to the house. I spun around just in time to see her father's truck park right behind my mustang. I waved at Raymond, surprised to find that Fiona wasn't even sitting on the passenger seat beside him. Where was my mate?

I jogged towards the driver's side the second her father climbed out of the truck. He smiled at me, clear surprise laced on his features as he greeted me. "Hello, Blake. I'm surprised to see you here."

I lifted up my eyebrow in question.

"What do you mean?"

He shrugged his shoulders, placing both hands in his jean pockets as he stared up at me.

"Well, Fiona said that you were busy doing some errands with your father and wouldn't be done until later this evening. It's a shame you weren't there to see her leave."

It seemed like my whole world suddenly stopped as his last words hit my wolf and I by force. Leave? What did he mean by leave? Where could our mate possibly have gone?

"I'm sorry, what did you say?"

His expression took on a bewildered one as he said slowly,

"Leave. You know, to New Jersey? She's leaving today so she could start school Monday. She had decided to take the early Summer term right after graduation. I just dropped her off at the Colorado Springs Airport not too long ago. It's sad to see my little baby leave so quickly, but she did always say that she wanted to take on her mother's footsteps by becoming a nurse and attend the same school she did." He paused, his eyebrows furrowing as he took in my expression.

"Didn't she tell you that she was going to Brookdale Community College?"

I shook my head slowly, my hands beginning to tremble at my sides as my wolf began to thrash about inside of me. This cannot be happening.

"No, she didn't."

"Hmm, well that's strange. I figured she told you since she said that you weren't able to make it to see her leave."

I took in a steady breath, the scent of my mate coming off from her father not helping my wolf's state whatsoever. I cringed at the smell and turned my head, trying my best to calm myself down and not frighten the man standing in front of me.

"Where did you say you left her again?" I asked through gritted teeth, which earned me a confused stare from him.

"Colorado Springs Airport. Are you alright, son?"

I nodded, ignoring his question.

"And at what time is she supposed to leave?"

He pulled out his left hand from his pocket and stared down at the watch on his wrist.

"At three thirty. So she should be leaving in about twenty minutes."

I fought the urge to growl in frustration as I ran a trembling hand through my hair. I was sure that it looked completely messed up on top of my head, but my hair was the least of my worries.

"Did she say anything? Anything else at all....about me?" It was hard to speak with my wolf growling and snapping furiously inside me. I wasn't exactly sure how long I was going to be able to hold him back before he fully took over. I knew very well that by car it would take a lot longer to reach the airport compared to my wolf's speed. There was no doubt in my mind that he would rather take over than allow me to drive. With such little time on my hands, I knew that that would be the best option.

He pursed his lips as he stared up at the sky as if deep in thought. Just when I was about to get back in my car and speed away, he raised a hand up in the air to stop me before reaching into his back pocket and grabbing a piece of crumbled up paper. From where I stood, I could easily see some sort of writing within.

'I have a bad feeling about this,' my wolf said through clenched teeth. I couldn't agree more with his words. The mere sight of another letter coming from Fiona, hopefully this time it was from her and not somebody else, made my stomach turn over, leaving an unsettling feeling to reside within me.

"She did leave this note for you. She told me that if I were to see you around, to simply hand it over to you." He reached out his hand as I grabbed the note from his grasp with a trembling one. He mustn't have noticed because he continued,

"I guess she had a lot of time on her hands for her to write it down by hand this time around."

His words calmed me slightly, but not enough to settle down my agitated wolf. Pushing his frustration aside, I opened up the note and straightened out the crumbled up paper to view its content better. My eyes quickly scanned the letter, immediately recognizing her delicate handwriting:

Blake,

Do not worry, it is in fact me writing this letter. I would've told you about my leave in person, but I was too scared about you and your wolf's reaction. I know this is sudden and I am sorry for not telling you this beforehand, but I don't think we're going to work out. I am not the right person to take such responsibility, especially for such a large and strong pack like your own. I hope you understand where I am coming from. By me becoming the pack's Luna, there is no telling how much danger I will put you all in. And I cannot bear the thought of knowing that I am putting your lives in danger all because fate chose me to be your mate. I know I am not worthy to be your mate. I hope you find someone before you turn twenty-one who is capable of taking such a position. And do not worry about me, I will be fine. Despite us being destined to be together, I know this will never work out between us. I will always love you and I know you'll be a great Alpha some day. Please do understand the reason why I am leaving and please do not come looking for me. This is for the best.

Fiona

By the time I had reached the last and final sentence, I crumbled up the piece of paper in my hand and stuffed in my back jeans pocket. Without a second glance, I ran to my car, turning on the ignition faster than Mr. Christopher could acknowledge my actions. I could hear him calling out my name, but his voice was drowned out by the sound of my engine roaring to life and the screeching sound of my tires making a u-turn around the front yard of the house.

Within seconds I was racing down the street and towards the direction of the airport. I knew very well that by car I will never be able to make it on time. The best way I could do so was in my wolf form. My wolf was struggling to break free, but I knew I couldn't just shift and allow my clothes to rip to shreds with the objects that were now lying in my pockets.

I parked the car near a tree and quickly pulled out the letter and the small velvet box. Throwing them in the compartment space between the two front seats, I opened the car door and jumped in the air, allowing the shift to take place. The next thing I knew, I was on all fours and racing across the forest towards the airport. I pulled back and allowed my wolf to take over, knowing very well that he would be able to track down my mate's scent a lot faster than I could.

'We need to get to her before she leaves,' my wolf growled as he effortlessly dodged the tall trees standing in our line of sight.

'I know. I just hope we get there on time.'

'I have a bad feeling about this,' my wolf said through clenched teeth. I couldn't agree more with his words. The mere sight of another letter coming from Fiona, hopefully this time it was from her and not somebody else, made my stomach turn over, leaving an unsettling feeling to reside within me.
