Werewolf
Lycan's Mate (His Claim) Chapter 89
Marcus's POV
"How much longer?" I complained for what seemed like the thousandth time this evening. I have been sitting in this chair for what felt like hours just staring at Fiona attend to the patients at the home. How in the world did she like this? What was so fun about assisting the elderly all day for countless hours? Well, not technically, but you know what I mean
Fiona looked up from the paperwork she was holding in her hands and simply rolled her hazel green eyes in my direction. Placing the papers on the nearby table to her left, she looked down at her wrist watch before replying, "Another hour."
My eyes widened in shock, thankful to be sitting in this armchair because I knew that had I been standing, there was no way that my legs would support my weight.
"What?" I yelled, making a few nurses and patients around me to stop what they were doing to eye me with weird looks. As if I cared really Fiona simply shrugged her shoulders and grabbed the paperwork once again, a smug expression on her face as she turned around and walked over to the front desk where that red headed chick was sitting at. I had to admit, she was kind of cute, but for some strange reason, I had no intention in getting to know her any better.
Letting out a long and agonizing sigh of frustration, I leaned my head against the back of the couch, allowing my body to slide down the soft cushions until I was practically sitting in mid-air. I blew out a puff of air, noticing how my now longer locks blew upward before landing perfectly against my forehead. With an amused smile, I blew a puff of air once more, moving my lips in different directions before the hair could fall back in place. As the last breath of air exited my lungs, I felt a presence appear beside me, making me jump in my seat.
"What the hell, Fiona?" I screamed, glaring in her direction
Her right eyebrow raised slowly as she stared down at me.
"Having fun there?" She questioned, a small smile playing on her lips as she motioned with her eyes to my hair, which was probably a minuscule mess right about now.
My glare intensified as I crossed my arms and righted myself on the seat, trying my best to put as much distance between us as possible since she was now sitting on the arm rest gazing down at me with amusement.
"Shut up," I muttered under my breath, hearing my wolf chuckle silently in the back of my mind
She let out a small laugh as she shook her head.
"I didn't say anything"
"Yeah, but you were thinking it," I murmured, focusing my attention at the intricate design on the rug beneath my feet
Suddenly, I felt her small hand ruffle my hair as she chuckled.
"You're still the same child at heart that I love," she said with a broad smile
I let out a soft sigh as I pushed her hand away.
"And you're still annoying," I said, returning the smile as I relaxed against the chair once more.
She rolled her eyes.
"Says the guy who is an expert at it"
"What can I say? I'm a pro," I said with a smug smile as I placed both hands behind my head and got more comfortable in my seat
"I feel bad for whomever ends up being your mate," she muttered under her breath, shaking her head with a soft smile.
I let out a heartless laugh as I stared off into the distance, not noticing exactly what my eyes landed on. My wolf whined softly in the back of my mind and I could practically picture him curling up into a ball inside my head. I'm going to be 21 in the next few months, and I have to admit, not finding our mate yet was a pain in the ass. Especially when your best friends both had found theirs and were perfectly happy. Well, sort of. Either way, I always tried to put the thought in the back of my mind for fear of having my train of thoughts head in the wrong direction and doing so was not a good way to calm down my already agitated wolf.
He wanted her. He needed her. Boy was he annoying when he went off on his rants about going out and searching for her, but he knew very well that we couldn't. I was third in command behind Blake and Anthonio, and it was my duty to look after the pack when they were off taking care of their Alpha and Beta duties. I will admit, it was a tad bit boring to say the least, just staying in the pack house, making sure everything was in order when they were off doing who knows what with their dads. Even my dad was able to go with them for crying out loud! How is that any fair?
I shook my head and thought back to the day we had first gotten here. Back to the very moment where Anthonio and I were in our wolf forms and I caught the most enticing scent I have ever smelled in my life. To say that it was hard to control my wolf was a complete understatement. I had nearly lost control right then and there and it was a surprise, to even myself, how quickly I had grabbed a hold of him and pushed him far back into my mind. But what surprised me the most was how sudden the scent had disappeared seconds after my wolf and I caught it. I tried my best to ignore it and assist Blake at retrieving his rightful mate back home, but I couldn't help but wonder where that scent had come from. And to think I smelled it once again earlier today, only to realize that it was coming off of the Beta of the Lincroft Pack! What the heck was all that about?
I let out a loud groan, startling Fiona who was sitting quietly beside me as I rubbed my hand over my face in exhaustion. We had only been here for a couple of days and this pack was already taking a toll on me, and that was really saying something on my part
Fiona tilted her head in question before asking softly,
"You alright, Marcus?"
I turned my head in her direction and gave her the best smile I could muster. "Aren't I always?"
Instead of the usual eye roll I would receive from her whenever I gave her my famous sly responses, she simply stared at me, her green eyes thoughtful as she tilted her head further to the right. She seemed to analyze me, her eyes raking over my face before settling on my eyes once more. I fidgeted in my seat, trying my best not break eye contact but feeling extremely weird under her heavy gaze
I let out a long sigh of relief the second her eyes turned away and I could feel myself breathe normally again
"You know," she said, making me look back at her.
"You don't have to follow me everywhere I go. You could explore the home until my shift is over."
I raised my eyebrow at her. Was she serious?
"Do you want Blake to have my head for breakfast if I were to leave you unsupervised?" I asked, my tone dead serious
She let out a soft sigh as she stood up and faced me fully. Crossing her arms over chest, she eyed me with an annoyed expression.
"Do I look like the type who needs constant supervision?"
"Fiona, I know you'll be fine on your own, but Blake gave me strict instructions to keep an eye on you and to never let you out of my sight for as long as you're here."
Her eyes widened a fraction of an inch, not of surprise, but of anger. Which was totally expected if I do say so myself. "Does he think I'm a child or something?" She shrieked, making the red head at the front desk turn to us in bewilderment.
Ignoring the red head's stare, I let out a long sigh before leaning forward and resting my elbows on my knees.
"You know he's just trying to protect you, Fiona," I reasoned, but she didn't seem to listen
"I don't need any protecting! I've been doing perfectly fine on my own for the last two years, you know," she said sternly, her cheeks turning a bright shade of red
"I know you have," I said softly, standing up and facing her. I was a good foot taller than she was, and yet my wolf still recognized her rank in the pack, immediately bowing his head in submission. Ignoring my wolf's response to her sudden rush of anger, I continued. "But think of this in his perspective. How would you feel if the roles were reversed? Wouldn't you have wanted to protect him from harm of any sort?"
Her eyes softened and a look of guilt overtook her features. Her shoulders slumped forward as she subconsciously hugged herself, her eyes avoiding my gaze at all costs.
"I guess you're right," she said quietly, her voice barely above a whisper.
"But I'll be okay. You don't need to worry about me while I'm here," she said, her eyes meeting mine
I nodded my head with a smile before a strong scent filled my nostrils. Turning my head abruptly to the left, I immediately met a pair of dark gray eyes watching me intently. His eyes darted to Fiona standing in front of me before settling themselves on me once more. Instead of bowing in respect at the strong Alpha a couple of feet in front of us, my wolf growled lowly at his presence, immediately feeling the need to protect our Luna. Well, future Luna….hopefully
I could feel my body go rigid under his intent gaze and I found myself taking a small step towards Fiona in a protective stance.
"It's not you who I'm worried about," I whispered down to her, my eyes never once leaving Alpha Ben.
Following my gaze, I heard her take a deep breath before letting it out slowly. Turning back to me, she reached out and grabbed a hold of my arm, immediately capturing my attention.
"You don't need to worry about him either, Marcus. He won't do anything," she tried reassuring me, but her words had no effect on my wolf and I
"Not while I'm here," I said through gritted teeth before looking back up to where he stood, only to realize that he had suddenly disappeared during our little exchange. I couldn't help but feel anxious at his abrupt disappearance. Taking in a deep breath, I allowed my wolf to take a step forward to see if we could catch his scent. It was starting to fade away among the others surrounding us, but it was still strong nonetheless
Fiona seemed to notice what I was doing because I felt her small hand squeeze tightly against her grasp on my arm, trying her best to grab my attention. But I wasn't having it this time
"Stop doing that," she commanded, making my wolf and I snap our eyes back to her small frame
"Doing what?" I asked innocently, silently cursing myself when my wolf's voice was slightly mixed with my own, making it sound a little more hoarse than usual
Releasing her grip on my arm, she folded her own above her chest and gave me a skeptic look.
"Your eyes," she said simply, her expression never once wavering
"I have blue eyes. They change all the time," I said, looking everywhere but in her direction
She rolled her eyes, something I have grown accustomed to, before responding,
"Last time I checked, blue eyes never suddenly turn a shade of black"
Letting out a sigh of defeat, I looked back down at her and nearly flinched at the intensity of her gaze.
"Sorry Fiona, I guess it's just instinct. Especially with how he's been acting around you. I don't want to take any chances."
Her expression softened to that of bewilderment.
"What do you mean?"
Okay, did she seriously not see how the guy always looked at her? Like if she was some sort of prized possession of his or something? I wanted to face palm myself right then and there at her question. Were women really that oblivious when it came to guys liking them? I guess it's just a girl thing.
Looking down at my watch, I noticed I had wasted nearly fifteen minutes of her time and I instantly reached for her shoulders, spun her around, and pushed her to the front desk.
"Don't worry about it. What you need to worry about now is getting your work done. I don't want Blake phoning me every five seconds wondering why we're staying here later than we should be.
She stopped on her heels, nearly making me fall over her before I quickly caught my footing and prevented any incident from happening. She spun around as she asked,
"How many times has he tried "phoning" you today?"
I looked up at the ceiling, quietly counting on my fingers before saying,
"A little over thirty"
Her eyes widened in shock.
"Seriously?"
