Marcus's POV

I shrugged my shoulders and leaned against the front desk with ease, making little miss red head eye me with suspicion in her eyes. What for? Who knows.

"Yup. I started ignoring them after 20," I said with a smug smile on my face.I shrugged my shoulders and leaned against the front desk with ease, making little miss red head eye me with suspicion in her eyes. What for? Who knows.

"Yup. I started ignoring them after 20," I said with a smug smile on my face

A small smile played on her lips as she stared at me.

"How mad do you think he is for you not answering him?"

"Pretty mad, if the small headache that is starting to form says anything," I said, rubbing my temples as I did so. And I wasn't kidding. It was like someone was trying to saw your head open, that's how strong the pain was. I had no clue exactly how I was able to put up the wall for this long, seeing as Blake was always able to break down countless of times before with ease. Either way, the pain was starting to become unbearable. I had two options: continue on with this annoying ass pain in the back of my mind or answer to a probably pissed off soon to be Alpha who'll probably have my neck pretty soon. Decisions, decisions.

She gave me a sympathetic look before saying,

"I'm sorry about that. But don't worry, I'll take care of it once my shift is over."

I simply nodded before making my way towards the cafeteria. Before I could step through the doubled doors, I looked over my shoulder and called,

"I'll be in the patio if you need me."

Not waiting for an answer, I stepped out into the cool night air, relishing the cold feel on my skin as I walked over to a nearby sitting area. The patio was completely vacant, only the sound of the wind echoing through the trees reaching my ears. I was surprised to see how much land the home had in its property and I immediately felt the need to shift and allow my wolf to run for what seemed like forever since the last time we had done so.

My wolf whined silently as I sat comfortably on a seat, letting out a deep sigh as he paced back and forth inside of me. It was common for us to go on long runs during our free time or volunteer to patrol just so we can run freely as much as we wanted to. So you can understand why it had been very difficult to restrain my wolf for so long while residing in a city like this

'Just one run,' my wolf pleaded, becoming more restless with every second that ticked by.

'We'll be back before our Luna is done with her shift.'

I ran a hand through my hair, staring off at the trees with eagerness before shaking my head and focusing on the fallen leaves that swirled about on the ground.

'You know our orders. We are not to leave her until the moment she is back with her mate.'

I could practically picture him rolling his eyes at me and slumping onto the imaginary ground in my mind.

'Yeah, yeah,' he muttered, letting out a puff of air. Silence filled my mind before I felt a sudden change of mood emanating from him. Confused at his sudden change of emotion, I was about to question him, but he beat me to it. 'You know, even though we were ordered to keep an eye on Fiona, don't you think it'll be a lot easier to make sure she's safe while in our wolf form?'

I pursed my lips, contemplating his suggestion before shaking my head in disagreement.

'No, that wouldn't be a good idea. We're surrounded by humans, and I'm sure you can sense it. If a human were to see us, there is no doubt that both Alphas will have our asses for that little slip up.

'That is true, but from what I could smell, there is no human lurking in this area. This property is strictly for the home and has borders all around. Not technically an invisible one like the one most packs have, but they have good enough security around the perimeter since the former Alpha resides here. So the chances of us being seen while going on a run is slim to none.'

I rolled my eyes, letting out a small chuckle.

'You know, you're the reason why I always seem to get in trouble with Blake'.

He responded with a wolfy laugh which sent a vibration along the length of my mind.

'Can't a wolf have a bit of fun?'

Without wasting any more time, I stood up from the seat and looked back at the home. From where I stood, I was unable to see Fiona; but allowing my wolf to step forward, I detected her scent somewhere around the second floor of the building. Probably assisting some patient who was still awake at this hour. My wolf grew rigid for a second before relaxing inside of me the second he smelled Ben's scent coming from his own office on the first floor

'I'll make sure to keep a high alert on her while we're gone,' my wolf reassured me

Taking a hesitant step back, I breathed in deeply before dashing behind the nearest tree. Making sure no one was around to see, I removed my clothing before folding them neatly beneath a set of leaves that had fallen. The second I made sure they were properly hidden, my wolf immediately stepped forward and I welcomed the change. Though the shifting of bones and muscle still felt strange to me, it was a sensation I never seemed to grow tired of

The next thing I knew, when I opened my now darker blue eyes, I was standing on all fours. Light gray fur surrounded my entire body and my wolf instinctively stretched his long legs, enjoying the feel of being in his natural form. Opening his eyes once more, I was able to see everything he saw. What once would have been a bit more difficult to see in my human form, I was able to see every single speck of dust that filled the night air. The trees and brown leaves that decorated the ground seemed to be illuminated by some unseen light. With a wolfy grin, he took off into the night

We had been running for a good twenty minutes or so without stopping until a scent suddenly caught our attention. Stopping on his heels, he tilted his head back and sniffed the air, his ears moving in all directions to pick out any small sound that an intruder might cause. We stood silent for what seemed like hours before the sound of a twig snapping to our right made him stiffen. Turning immediately to the sound, he crouched down in a defensive stance, his stomach close to the ground and his upper lip pulling back into a snarl. He let out a soft growl of warning at the intruder before a rather large gray wolf that was a darker shade than our own stepped through the trees, revealing its full form

Tilting our head to the right, we took in a deep breath before the strong scent of power emanated from it. Without hesitation, my wolf relaxed his posture and bowed down before the powerful wolf. He seemed to stare at us for some time before nodding his head in acknowledgement. With the reassurance of his actions, we straightened our stance and met the wolf's light gray eyes. It was evident that whomever this wolf was, he had complete control over his wolf with little restraint. Pushing my wolf back, I stepped forward and immediately noticed how he seemed to recognize my natural blue shade of eyes

'Blake,' came a strong voice into my mind

I tilted my head in question. That voice. I know that voice. Where have I heard it before? The wolf let out a small chuckle of amusement before he sat down comfortably on the ground with a small smile.

'It's me, Joel,' he said matter of factly

My eyes widened in astonishment as I took in the wolf in front of me. Wow, for an old man, he was in pretty good shape. He seemed to hear my thoughts because I noticed him give me a flat look before I could take back my words

'I'm sorry. I'm just surprised to see that it's you,' I said, feeling embarrassed as I ducked my head

He shook his head before his smile returned.

'I may be old, but I still got a lot of spirit inside of me, you know.' I merely nodded before he continued.

'So what brings you out here? Shouldn't you be watching over Fiona right about now?'

I shrugged my shoulders and felt my wolf take a step forward as he picked up on our Luna's scent. After making sure that Ben was no where near her, he allowed me full control before responding.

'My wolf and I were in need of a good run. It's been a few days since we have been able to do so. Seeing as your pack resides in a city rather than in rural area.'

He nodded, letting out a soft sigh.

'I know what you mean. Despite the fact of me not liking the idea of having to live here with all the other humans, I can't complain about the area this property has,' he said while looking around the trees that surrounded us.

'It's good to let your wolf out every once in a while and remember all the good times.'

Silence filled the air as we looked out at the trees, both lost in thought. A few minutes passed before a thought occurred to me. I looked over at Joel who was staring up at the moon that shined above. It cast a white glow on his dark gray fur, making it a lighter hue and him seem almost surreal. As if he was simply an illusion the moon was making right before my eyes

Should I ask him? I thought to myself, looking down at the ground and digging a small hole with my right paw. I mean, it's the perfect time to ask him since he's right here and there's nobody else around. Especially not his grandson who I seriously did not like since the moment I laid eyes on him. But it was too personal. I highly doubt such a strong and powerful man like himself would open up so easily. And yet, I was proven wrong by his next words

'All you need to do is ask, you know,' he said, making me snap my head at him, only to realize that he had been watching me this entire time

'What do you mean?' I asked innocently, avoiding his gaze at all costs

I heard a low chuckle in my mind before he said,

'I know you're dying to ask me something. So might as well spit it out before my grandson orders me to head back inside. Or worse, Fiona.'

I let out a small laugh at his last words before taking in a deep breath.

'So you're Ben's grandfather, right?' I asked slowly, meeting his light gray eyes. He simply nodded at my question.

'From which side of the family, exactly?'

'His mother's. Which isn't exactly a good thing,' he said, his voice sounding sad all of a sudden

I lifted my eyebrow questionably before asking,

'What do you mean?'

He let out a soft sigh before his eyes met mine once more, the intensity within them nearly becoming unbearable.

'As you know, based on the fact that your best friend so happens to be the one next in line in becoming your pack's Alpha, you should know how the whole Alpha thing works. As in, who exactly is the one next in line.'

I nodded my head.

'Of course. It always ends up being the first male born,' I said, a cold shudder running down my spine as the memory of Maxwell's death and the pain he caused Fiona that night appeared in my mind

'Exactly. But when I was Alpha of the Lincroft Pack, my mate and I were only able to have one daughter, immediately making her next in line. But seeing as a pack cannot function properly without an Alpha, her mate, Ben's father, became Alpha of the pack. But after that, things started going terribly wrong.'

'How so?'

'Well, as you can see from the place we are residing, a city is no place to mark a territory for a pack. Our wolf like nature demands for us to have open space to run freely as we please without fear of having humans spot us and expose our existence. But this was not our original location.'

My eyebrows shot upward in surprise.
