Kai’s P.O.V

A few days later, we drove to the condo unit that Jonathan had previously bought for Night to live in, so he could live off-campus and stop sharing a room with me. The same condo that I had visited several months ago, when I had still been fighting with myself over where my heart truly belonged.

But now… now we were here together with his parents’ blessing, and we were here not because of Night’s obligation to this family and their business, but because we were free to use this as we wished.

And we wanted to.

The condo that my sister had helped me get previously may have been cheap, but it was tiny and not enough room to have sleepovers and host our friends. But this one was definitely bigger and brighter. Perfect for me and Night.

Tonight the condo was filled with the kind of warmth and noise that made the walls feel more alive than mere brick and plaster. Laughter bounced from one corner to another as our friends, our found family, filled the space. The scent of takeout mingles with the faint citrus of the new candles Night insisted on bringing from their house, adding an inviting touch to our new home.

I caught Night’s eye from across the room as he chatted with Landon and Devon, their hands full of mismatched plates and forks, arguing about who brought the better dessert. He looked at ease, his smile genuine, and the tension that had haunted him earlier now gone.

No doubt, this one’s a sight I’ll never take for granted.

“Hey, toast time!” Tanya shouted, raising her plastic cup. Everyone turned, the room growing a little quieter as they waited for someone to start.

Night looked at me, a smirk playing on his lips, and nodded for me to go ahead.

I cleared my throat. “To new beginnings,” I said, lifting my cup, “and to the family we choose, who stood by us when the path was anything but easy. And to Night—” I turned to him, feeling my heart swell with everything I was about to say, “—my reason for believing that love, despite all odds, can conquer anything.”

The room erupted in cheers as our friends congratulated us, the clinking of cups blending with voices, laughter, and the kind of joy that fills every empty space.

Night leaned into me, whispering a soft “Thank you,” and I knew then that this, right here, was what it means to finally be home.

“Ah, well, can’t say I’m jealous,” Landon joked as he leaned into Devon. He pointed at me and Night. “You two are not the only ones with your love lives intact.” He shared a look with Devon, their hands intertwined and eyes crinkling with the kind of laughter that only comes when you're deeply content.

I rolled my eyes playfully. I was too happy to even fake annoyance and make a scathing remark. Looking over at the rest of our friends, I could happily tell that they were all in good hands now.

Saya and Josh were leaning close, their heads nearly touching as they talked quietly, occasionally breaking were in their usual form—bickering over who something; I don’t know exactly what it was because they were always bickering—but the playful nudges and quick pecks they exchanged between mock arguments told the real story.

I was happy that they were happy, more so that we were all friends who had each other’s backs through thick and thin. How could I ever survive college without these guys?

I raised my eyebrow at Cole, who was sitting back with his feet kicked up, a smug grin spread across his face. “Looks like you’re the odd one out now, huh?” I teased, and the room erupts in chuckles.

Cole leaned forward, unfazed, with a glint in his eye, making all of us croon a collective, “Oooh.”

“Not for long,” he said with a playful smirk. “I’m actually working my charm on a freshman from the Medical faculty. Trust me when I say that she’ll fall for me in no time.”

A wave of hoots and applause filled the air, and even Night raised his cup with an approving nod. “Well, here’s to the brave souls still diving into the chaos of romance,” he said, drawing another round of cheers and clinking cups. “AKA, us.”

The atmosphere brimmed with warmth, the laughter rolling through like a wave. This is what it feels like to be surrounded by people who have seen your highs and lows, who celebrate your wins as if they were their own. In this moment, surrounded by friends who have become family, everything felt perfectly right.

How long has it been since I last felt like this?

As the laughter and chatter filled the room, I took a steadying breath, my heart thundering in my chest. It’s now or never.

Before I lost my nerve, I set my drink down and moved in front of him, lowering myself to one knee. The room went silent immediately, a collective hush sweeping over everyone. Night’s eyes widened, and he leaned forward.

“Night,” I begin, my voice steady but filled with emotion, “I don’t want to rush anything. I know we have a lot of life left to live, and there’s no need to hurry into the next chapter. But I do know this: there’s no future I can imagine without you in it.”

His breath caught, and I saw a glimmer of tears in his eyes. The room remained silent, our friends frozen in place, watching this moment unfold.

I took the ring out from my pocket, my father’s ring, and held it in front of him, the single solitaire glimmering in the lights.

“So, while we keep growing and finding our place in the world, I want to take this step with you. Will you be my fiancé, my partner, as we carve out our path together? And when the time is right, when we’re ready, I want to marry you and share the rest of our lives together.”

Night’s eyes searched mine, and then, with a bright, tearful smile, he nodded. He took the ring with trembling hands, his eyes shimmering with tears that spilled over as he looked at me, full of love and certainty. “I promise to love only you, Kai, for the rest of my life,” he whispered.

The room was so quiet for a moment that I could hear my heart pounding in my ears as I placed the ring on his ring finger, watching it glide gracefully onto place, a perfect fit. And then our friends burst into applause and cheers.

“Kiss him already!” Landon shouted, and the others joined in, laughing and calling out in playful impatience.

I grinned, feeling the weight of the world lift from my shoulders. Pulling Night closer, I cupped his face and pressed my lips to his in a kiss that’s soft and full of promise.

The noise around us blurred into the background as it’s just us, wrapped in this moment. It’s a promise, sealed between us, to love and cherish each other for the rest of our lives.

When we broke apart, Night's cheeks were flushed, and he leaned his forehead against mine, a smile tugging at his lips. Our friends whooped and whistled, Devon practically dancing in excitement while Tanya playfully punched Trey, who cheered louder than everyone else.

This is it, I thought. This is home.
