The Bad Boy's Dirty Little Secret BL Chapter 46: Something Fishy
Kai’s P.O.V
“Woah? Am I dreaming?” Was the first thing my mother said to me as soon as she opened the door and found me standing at the doorstep of my parent’s house.
“Apparently not,” I gave her a sheepish smile as she moved aside to let me in. “Is Kia home?”
“Yes, and so is your father.”
I stopped halfway while taking off my shoes. “Dad’s home?” I looked back at my mom, who had just shut the door behind me.
“Yes,” she smiled gently as she beckoned me inside. “He came home for the week. He’ll be leaving again next week.”
Dad was a surgeon, whose profession kept him away from the house most of the year, so it was indeed a rare sight to see him home. I was happy to know that he was going to stay home for the entire week, so that my mom won’t feel as lonely. But that also meant that my conversation with Kia would be delayed further.
Mom brought me to the dinner table where Kia and dad were already seated. But even though dad thought it was a pleasant surprise that I visited out of the blue and managed to make it in time for dinner…Kia, did not look happy…at all.
I frowned at my sister, nudging her with my feet under the table to ask her what was wrong. But in return, all I got was a death glare so intense that it made me squirm in my seat uncomfortably.
What did I do this time?
“Everything alright, son?” My dad asked me as with a frown when he saw my expression.
“Yes, dad.” I gave him a polite smile. “Everything is fine.”
“Good. Then how about you go help your sister with the dishes?” He suggested. “Your mom made this delicious dinner for us. So you help her clean up.”
My dad hardly ever made suggestions around the house. Whenever he said something…we had to do it. It has been this way since childhood and it seems like nothing has changed ever since. It’s not that he was overly strict, but he was disciplined and liked to distribute tasks evenly.
“But dad…I have so much to talk to you about.” Kia protested, making my mouth fall open in shock.
Kia…was complaining to dad? Wow! That was a first! Usually she was daddy’s most obedient little daughter.
“Just finish up the dishes real quick, okay?” Dad gave her a warm smile and a pat on her head, but his words were final. “It won’t take long. And then, we have all week to discuss anything you want.”
Finally, Kia nodded and got up from her seat, before she started collecting the dirty dishes and headed to the kitchen.
“Go help her.” My mom nudged, as she started to collect the leftovers to put in the fridge. “Or your dad will scold you again.”
“Fine,” I sighed, rolling up my sleeves as I headed to the kitchen.
I needed to talk to Kia anyway, but I didn’t want to be washing dishes alongside her. It’s boring and I wanted to have a proper conversation with her anyway.
But for some reason, she seemed to be in a bad mood since I came into the house. She even talked back to dad, something she would never do if she was in her right mind. What exactly was going on with her?
“Bad day?” I asked as I came to stand next to her in the kitchen, getting a towel ready to clean up the washed dishes and put them away.
“Bad life.” She scoffed. “Tell me. What did you want to talk about? I heard you ask for me when you came home.”
“Ah…that…” I hesitated a bit, wondering if I should ask her or not given her current mood.
“Just spit it out, Kai. I’m not feeling very chatty today.” She told me in an unusually harsh voice.
“Fine.” I finally decided to hell with it and just spit it out. “You remember that condo that you told me about? The one that your friend used to live in. I want to know if it’s still available. I need to move.”
“That condo?” Kia frowned, pausing with her hands submerged in the soapy water. “Wait a minute…”
And then she turned towards me with a glare, her mouth turning into a scowl in an instant. “I knew there was something fishy about you showing up here out of nowhere and wanting to have dinner with the family! Damnit! You even offered to wash dishes with me! What the fuck, Kai!”
“Look…all I’m asking, is if that condo is still available.” I sighed, watching her scrub the plates with vicious intent. “Why do you have to be so dramatic about it?”
“Seriously, Kai? Now you think I’m being dramatic?” She sighed, letting go of the dishes and turning to face me, after wiping her hands on a towel. “You could’ve asked that over the phone like you always do. Why bother coming here today of all days?”
“Why?” I frowned, trying to think back if I had mistakenly forgotten a birthday or an anniversary. But when I couldn’t remember shit even after raking my brain for a few moments, I turned to her helplessly. “Tell me what I forgot this time…I’m ready to take the blame for it.”
“Shit, Kai, it’s not about you forgetting anything!” Kia nearly yelled, making us both turn around quickly to make sure that our parents didn’t find out. When we saw that none of them had come rushing into the kitchen and that the TV was still running in the living room, I finally turned back to my sister, my eyes wide in surprise.
“Calm down. Let’s finish up and go talk upstairs, okay?” I told her, and found her nodding with a sigh.
“Fine…sure.”
After ten more minutes of scrubbing and wiping, the dishes were finally done and Kia and I snuck into her room upstairs after telling our mom that we’re just going to talk for a bit. I think our parents were too busy enjoying some show on the TV to really care, so it was easier to sneak back upstairs.
Finally, I shut the door to Kia’s room and took a seat next to her on the bed before turning to ask her what had been bothering me all this time.
“What’s going on?” I looked at her worried. “You seem stressed. Did something happen at work? Is anyone troubling you? Or did you have a fight with your fiancé again?”
When I saw her expression shift at the last option, I instantly knew what it was. “It’s Rick, isn't it? Did he do something to upset you? Is that what you wanted to talk to dad about?”
“I wanted to tell them that…I’m gonna call it quits with Rick.” Kia slouched back against her headboard, looking defeated.
“Why? What happened? Is he still pressuring you into quitting your job?” I frowned, my jaw clenched.
“More like suggesting…and I can just tell that he isn't happy with my success.” She sighed, rubbing at her eyes. “I was hoping that maybe dad would understand where I’m coming from since he’s a surgeon as well…even if mom doesn’t…but I’m not so sure anymore. I had mustered up the courage to tell them tonight…”
“But I came at the wrong time and messed it up, didn’t I?” I asked wearily.
Kia shook his head. “No. You didn’t know. I was just upset that I didn’t get the chance…”
“Maybe it was for the better?” I asked, raising my eyebrows. “Maybe it was because this wasn’t the right time? Do you want me to talk to Rick?”
“Hell no!” Kia shook her head immediately. “You’re younger. It would look really bad if you talked to him on my behalf. It would upset his whole family and I don’t want you getting into trouble just because you tried to help me.”
“Kai, how can you say that!” I argued. “I’m your brother, and regardless of my age, I am still an adult who has the right to talk to him if I feel like my sister is upset because of him.”
“I don’t think it’s a good idea, Kai…”
“Kai? Kia?” Mom’s voice sounded from downstairs, interrupting our conversation. “Can one of you come downstairs?”
“I’ll see what she wants.” I told Kia as I got up from the bed and headed downstairs.
“Mom?” I asked when I saw her standing at the foot of the stairs with a bowl of fruits in her hand. “Apples?”
“Yes!” She grinned. “Your father brought them from The Applewood Farm in Ontario. He has wine too, but let’s keep that for later.”
“Alright.” I took the tray from her. “I’ll be heading back then.”
“Will you be staying the night?” She asked. “Or will you be heading back to the dorm?”
“I think I’ll be staying,” I told her. What I didn’t add was that I didn’t exactly have anyone to return to right now, so it was going to be a good few agonizing days before I could move to a condo.
“Alright.” She waved at me. “Your father and I’ll be heading to bed now. Call if you need something.”
“Okay.” Shaking my head, I walked upstairs again with the fruits and entered Kia’s room and placed the plate at the foot of the bed. “Mom gave us apples.”
However, when I looked up at her, it was to see her wearing a completely different expression as she held my phone in her hands.
“What happened?” I frowned when I saw Kia looking down at my cell phone with a scowl.
“I…don’t know.” She looked up at me worriedly. “Someone just called you…it said Devon, so I took the call but someone else answered the call…and I think…they got upset for some reason. What just happened?”
Suddenly…a lightbulb lit up in my head when I realized exactly what had happened.
It wasn’t Devon who had called me…it was Night…and now…he probably got the wrong idea as to who had picked up the call…
“Shit!”
