Night’s P.O.V

I couldn’t get away from Rosalie’s clutches fast enough. She had stalled, keeping me from going after Kai, and no matter how much I tried to blame her for all this mess; I knew she wasn’t the actual problem.

I shouldn’t have kept this from Kai to begin with…and now that he had learned the truth from an outside source, I was worried that he would be getting the wrong idea.

However, that conversation with Rosalie seemed to have taken a really long time, because when I finally got back to the hall where the shooting had taken place, I found that the entire Student Council was gone and the volunteers were already starting to wrap up the equipments and decor.

The set was slowly being put away—chairs and tables folded and neatly tucked into boxes, clothes and props stored properly according to function, backdrops rolled and loaded into storage.

Something about this whole setting felt symbolic…as if it wasn’t just the set being torn down, but mine and Kai’s relationship was beginning to unravel as well…

I tapped a passing volunteer in the shoulder, and she turned around to face me questioningly, a pile of clothes held in her hand. “Um…sorry to bother you, but I couldn’t find the people I was looking for. Is the shoot over already? Did the council members leave?”

She sighed. “Yeah, we just wrapped up, like, five minutes ago.” She sounded exhausted; I couldn’t blame her, considering how the volunteers had all the heavy duty work.

“I-I see,” My voice trembled slightly and I tried to keep my composure as best as I could. “Thank you.”

She gave me a polite smile and went about her way to continue what she was doing, while I went back to looking around. I couldn’t believe how fast the set had be wrapped up…had I really been talking to Rosalie that long…or had something happened here that I wasn’t aware of?

Surely, Kai didn’t barge in here and demand that they all start packing up even though the shoot wasn’t finished yet, right?

Right?

Knowing that this was a futile attempt, I made one last ditch effort to find Kai and headed straight for the Student Council office. I knew that eventually, we’d have to meet at the apartment, but I still didn’t want to go back home to us fighting or with misunderstandings between us.

In one corner of the room, I found Zach, Tina, and Yin huddled together, talking in hushed tones. Tina was the first to spot me approaching from the corner of her eye, and she tapped the other two to let them know I was here.

“What happened with Kai?” they asked immediately.

I stopped in my tracks, taken aback by their sudden attack. They stared at me with furrowed brows and I could tell they were upset about something. It was the confirmation I needed to know that Kai was pissed and he must have said something to them that had them wrapping up the shoot immediately. But it also meant that Kai still hadn’t told them about us.

“Guys, I’m sorry, I really don’t have time to explain,” I said quickly, the words spilling out of my mouth as though I was in a drunken frenzy. And even though my words sloshed together, almost indistinguishable from each other, I could tell that the others were listening to me closely. “I need to find Kai right now. I have something urgent to discuss with him, but I can’t find him anywhere. The shoot got wrapped up and he wasn’t at the hall, so I thought he might be here…”

They all exchanged looks which I couldn’t decipher, but whatever it was, I had a feeling Kai had taken some of his anger out on them. I wanted to apologize for that but at the same time, talking to Kai and making him understand the situation was of utmost importance to me.

Finally, Tina let out a sigh, deciding to break the silence that had settled in the room like a shroud.

“Well…I…he came into the auditorium a bit earlier and seemed to be in a terrible mood, so I wouldn’t go near him right now if I were you.” She warned, slightly hesitant as she clearly did not want to get involved in whatever fight they were sure I had with Kai. “Maybe it would be better if you didn’t talk to him this instant.”

I shook my head, insisting, “No. It’s already too late; I can’t risk prolonging this conversation any longer. I need to explain this to Kai this instant.”

The three of them exchanged hesitant looks once again, and the longer they kept stalling, the more impatient I became. I needed to get to Kai! Why the fuck didn’t anyone understand the urgency of the situation!

“What even happened between the two of you?” Zach asked, frustration evident in his face. “Like…I’ve never seen Kai this mad and I’ve known him for over two years!”

Tina and Yin both nodded their heads, their expression just as serious, flabbergasted even.

But I didn’t have time to explain this to them at that moment. I needed to find Kai, and fast.

“Guys…I really don’t have time to answer all your questions right now! Where is Kai?” I asked, desperation seeping into my voice. “Which direction did Kai go?”

Zach scratched the back of his head, finally understanding the gravity of the situation. “Well, if you’re not gonna tell us, might as well get this over with.” He sighed, pointing towards the exit with a tilt of his head. “Kai went to the parking lot to get his car. If you run now, you might catch him before he pulls out of the place.”

I didn’t need to be told twice. I turned around and I ran toward the parking lot, not caring to answer any more of their questions. I could feel their stares burning into the back of my head; they were impossible to ignore. But I had far more important matters to attend to. Namely, explaining to Kai what went down. Or try to. I don’t know if he had it in his heart to listen to me now, but I wasn’t about to give up without a fight.

My heart pounded as I ran, and when the near-empty parking lot was in sight, my eyes immediately scanned the place, drawn to where I knew Kai had parked his car. I pumped my legs faster, hoping to catch up to him before he left.

I saw him from afar as he got into his car and turned on the ignition. The engine hummed to life as I ran down the parking lot while waving my arms, attempting to get his attention. I didn’t want this to escalate than it already had. Fuck! I could only hope that Kai would listen!

“Kai!” I called out desperately. “Please! You’ve got to hear me out first!”

But when I thought that he would at least pull over to listen, at least try and reason with me…the wheels started turning as the car started to pull out of the parking space. He wasn’t going to listen to me.

Helplessness plagued my mind as I realized that it might be too late.

Without thinking, I pushed my legs faster until I was standing in front of the car, daring him to keep moving forward. Come on, I thought to myself in a desperate attempt, stop the car, Kai! Please…just listen to me. If you really love me then you will stop…

I shut my eyes tightly as the headlights turned almost blinding, the car nearing me a phenomenal speed. To be honest, I had no doubt about his feelings toward me. It was just that I knew his anger had a vice-like grip on him, and Kai usually didn’t think things through when he got angry.

I didn’t know whether he would see reason now, or if his anger would get the best of him. I felt my entire body turn rigid and tense as I braced for impact… any moment now…

But then I heard the unmistakable sound of the tires screeching to a sudden halt and my shoulders sagged in relief, my arms falling to my side. As I slowly opened my eyes, I saw Kai sitting there, hands gripping the wheel so tightly his knuckles turned white.

He had a mad look in his eyes, and I broke eye contact, unable to hold the stare. He sat there, behind the wheels for god knows how long, and all the while, my heart pounded in my chest, fear having me rooted to the spot.

But then…something unexpected happened.

I froze when I heard the distinct sound of the car door opening and closing with more force than necessary…and before I could look up at his face, to read his expression…my head snapped to the side from the force of the impact.

My eyes widened in shock as my cheek stung from the force of the hit. Kai…had…slapped me…

“If you want to die that badly, you should go stand in front of the highway traffic and not my car,” he said furiously. “I have no intention of being put behind the bars because of your carelessness.”

I knew that Kai was mad—and rightfully so. I knew I had a hand in what happened between us. I knew he was feeling hurt and betrayed…

But none of that excused the fact that he had just hit me.

He might not have run me over with his car, but it seemed that he was still not seeing reason, and he was too angry to be rational. Again and again, his rage got the best of him.

Without giving him time to judge my next move, I pulled my hand back, and jammed my fist into his stomach, making him double over in pain as he gasped for air.

“What the hell!” He spat out when he managed to get his bearings straight.

“No matter how mad you are at me, or whatever the hell happened between us, I am not the type of man who takes hits from anyone,” I spat. “Not even you.”

That seemed to have triggered another flare of anger in Kai because the next thing I knew, he was inches from my face, grabbing onto my collar with both hands. “Then would you rather go back to your house and marry that woman instead? Did my anger turn you off? Huh? Do you wanna end this and go back to daddy, wagging your tail? Is that what you want now that your fancy, old life has come knocking back up your door?”
