Night’s P.O.V

“R-Rosalie?” I blinked, not quiet believing my eyes. “Is that really you?”

“Wow…” She looked at me with a bit of disappointment. “I was expecting a more enthusiastic response from my fiancé.”

“I…er…” I had no idea what to say. My heart was thundering so loud, both from shock and fear, that I could hardly hear any other sounds around me.

Rosalie Clearwater…the woman that I had been engaged to since I was born…was standing right in front of me…in my condo…past eight o’ clock in the evening.

How the fuck did she even get in here? And what on earth was she doing here now of all times?

“Weren’t you supposed to get here next month?” I frowned. “That’s what my mother told me.”

“Oh, I know!” She exclaimed with a grin, taking my hand and hauling me inside, the door slamming shut behind us automatically.

She then went ahead and made herself at home, before patting the space next to her on the couch for me to sit. “But I got here early since my exam ended early and we needed to do so much preparation before the engagement.”

Even that dreaded word sent a not-so-pleasant shiver down my spine, and I had to force myself to talk to her, refraining from wanting to throw her out right then and there. After all, she was the daughter of my father’s business partner…and I had to act decent no matter what the cost.

“Yes I know-”

Before I could finish my sentence, a knock sounded on the door, before Raymond’s familiar voice rang out from outside the apartment, calling out my name.

“Oh shit!” Rosalie sprang up from her seat and rushed into the bathroom. “Don’t let him know I’m here! Please!”

I frowned as the bathroom door shut almost noiselessly, but I didn’t want Raymond to wait, so I went to open the door and took the luggage and food from him.

“Don’t you have a key?” I asked him with a frown, but in reality, I just wanted to know who else had access to my apartment…so I could be prepared in time.

“No, Sir.” Raymond said in his usual voice. “Only the Master and you have the two keys for this lock.”

“I see…” I frowned further. “Thank you, Raymond. You may leave. I won’t be needing anything further tonight.”

“Of course.” Raymond gave a small bow before he turned and left the building.

It was only when the hallways were clear that I turned around and shut the door behind me, and knocked on the bathroom door once to let Rose know that the coast was clear, before I went and took a seat on my bed.

Rosalie came out of the room with a sheepish smile on her face. “I…um…”

“How did you get the keys?” I asked her directly. “And why were you hiding from Raymond? Did you go to my house first?”

“Well…you see…” she plopped down on the bed next to me, making me scoot away from her immediately. “I did go to your house first because I wanted to see you first thing! But then I realized that you weren’t there and I met your mom instead. She’s the one who gave me the keys and told me to wait here to surprise you.”

“So…your parents don’t know that you’re back yet?” I raised my eyebrows in surprise.

“Not really.” Rosalie shrugged indifferently. “They know that I’ll be arriving tomorrow morning. Which is why…I need to-”

“No.” Was my immediate answer.

“But you didn’t even listen to what I wanted to say!” She whined, pouting her lips.

“I don’t need to listen to know what you’re about to say, Rosalie. And the answer is still no.” I stood up from the bed when she inched closer. “You need to leave right now. It’s getting late and your parents will be worried about you if they found out you were here.”

“No way, silly!” Her laugh was sweet like honey, as she crossed one exposed leg over the other, her tiny skirt barely covering anything. “How will they worry when they don’t even know that I’m here yet?”

She blinked her large green eyes up at me in an almost innocent gesture. Her dark honey brown hair spilled over one shoulder, exposing her long neck. She was wearing a crop top, which I was sure came with a jacket, but it seems like she had discarded it somewhere while waiting for me.

“Rosalie.” My voice was a warning, which only made her roll her eyes. “You need to leave. If you don’t go back to your house right now, I will call your parents and tell them to pick you up.”

“Ugh! Why are you such a mood killer?” She huffed. “We’re about to be engaged, damnit! What’s wrong with spending the night together?”

“The code words is ‘about to be’,” I reminded her. “We aren’t engaged yet. So I would prefer it if you went back to your house and slept there instead.”

“And what if I don’t?” There was a challenge in her voice, but the way she sat, her body leaning forward towards me in a way that screamed ‘seduction’, I couldn’t help but cringe inwardly at her behavior.

“If you don’t leave, I will.” I shrugged. “I can always go sleep over at any of my friend’s.”

Her expression hardened as she looked up at me, a frown creasing her brows. But finally, I could see the defeat in her eyes.

“Fine!” She scoffed, getting up from the bed. “No wonder your mom wanted me to check up on you! Just look at you! A hot girl wants to be in the room with you, practically throwing herself at you…and you still dare to chase me away!”

I froze…

“What?”

Did I really hear what I thought I heard? Or was my hearing playing tricks on me?

Rosalie, who was on the way to pick up her discarded coat and luggage that I now saw hidden behind the kitchen door, now turned to look at me with a frown. “What?”

Unable to keep my emotions in check, I strode over to her and grabbed her by her shoulders and forced her to look at me. “What did you just say to me? What did my mother tell you?”

“Ow! Night…” she smirked up at me. “I didn’t know you liked it rough…maybe this would please your mother…”

“Stop talking in riddles and spit it out!” I snapped, my grip tightening on her for real this time. “Tell me! What did my mother say when she asked you to come here!”

“Fine, I’ll tell you!” Rosalie groaned, freeing herself from my grip angrily. “She said that you’ve been behaving weirdly since I left and haven’t been getting along with any girls. She seemed worried but seriously? Why would she? I thought that you didn’t get along with any women because you only wanted to have me in your life. But now…I’m not so sure. Maybe there is some cause for concern if you’re sending me away like this…”

Pretty much everything she told me after the revelation that my mother was the one who send her here to find out what was ‘wrong’ with me…became background noise.

My mother knew…she already knew…and for once…I had made the mistake of thinking that she was somewhat sympathetic towards me, probably even one percent more than my father would ever be…but boy was I wrong.

She was no different from my father. She too believed that her son was diseased and abnormal, and that this was probably a phase that would pass by soon enough.

For the first time in my life…it felt like the ground had been pulled out from right under my feet…and I was completely helpless…

I shouldn’t be feeling this way. After all, I had known my parents all my life…but still…why did this hurt so badly? Why did it feel like my heart was being ripped off of my chest?

“What happened? You look pale…is everything alright? Night!”

Someone shook my shoulders vigorously, causing me to snap out of my trance. Turning, I locked eyes with Rosalie, who was looking up at my face with open concern. But I didn’t want her touching me…hell; I didn’t want her anywhere near me!

“I’m fine.” I told her, removing her hands from my shoulders. “You should get going. There’s a taxi stand right outside the compound. You’ll find a taxi in no time.”

“Are you sure you want me to leave?” She tried one last time, giving me her best puppy dog look. But I nodded seriously, telling her to get home safely.

But just as she turned to leave with her luggage, I remembered something vital. “Wait.”

Rosalie whipped around to look at me with hopeful eyes, a small smile on her lips. “Yes? Do you want me to-”

“Give me the keys.” I held out my hand for her. “The spare keys to my apartment.”

Her face fell as she reached into her purse and handed me the spare keys, before she huffed and turned around, slamming the door shut on my face on her way out of my condo.

As soon as she left, I sank to the floor, my legs giving out from under me.

I felt my chest constrict with undistinguished emotions as I struggled to breathe. It felt like no matter how much I tried to inhale, I just couldn’t get enough air into my lungs.

Why? Why did this keep happening to me?

When will I ever be free of this endless cycle? When will my parents ever understand that this was the real me? That nothing they do or say will ever change who I am at my core.

But that was the least of my worries at the moment…because right then, all I could think about was the boy who had given up so much to be with me.

Kai had gone through so many changes in his life, from questioning himself to finally accepting that he had feelings for me.

Every moment we spent together had been beautiful…and yet, I didn’t know what the future will hold for us anymore.

How do I proceed from here on out? Was our love…doomed from the very beginning?
