Kai’s P.O.V

I ducked behind the sofa, looking left and right to see if the coast was clear before aiming for my next target.

The table towards the center of the room was a bit too low, so if someone came down the staircase…shit! If someone came down the staircase, they’d be able to see me anyway. The sofas were all white and I was wearing a bright red shirt!

‘Think Kai, think!’ I told myself as I looked around once again before turning back to look at the engraved wooden door that I had just come in through.

Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea? Oh, what was I thinking? ‘Maybe’? It was a fucking horrible idea to be sneaking around at 1 AM like a bloody thief in my own bloody house!

However…the last thing I wanted was for either my mom or my dad to find me. As if having a bruised cheek and forehead wasn’t enough, but if either of my parents saw my like this right now and figured out that I had been in a fight…I’m sure I’d be leaving with more bruises than I came in.

‘Shit! This was a terrible idea!’ I thought once again, gritting my teeth as I lay flat on the ground and began crawling my way across the room so I could reach the stairs before either of my parents came out of their room down the hall.

However, I’d only made it two feet ahead of me when the lights in the living room turned on and the most annoying voice greeted my ears.

“Mom and dad are out. Stop crawling around like a centipede, you freak!”

Taking a deep breath, I got off the floor and dusted off my hands and knees before turning towards the one woman who was the bane of my existence. “Kiara.”

“I know my name, fart-face.” My beloved older sister gave me a sarcastic smile. “What the fuck are you doing here in the middle of the night, crawling on the ground like some kind of creepy crawler instead of using your legs like a normal human being?”

“Can’t I visit my own home now?” I asked her just as sarcastically. “Or have you established your evil reign on my domain by peeing on every object in the house?”

“Asshole!”

I avoided the kick just in time by sidestepping to the right, but not fast enough to avoid the punch that she threw to my jaw. Combined with the beating I took earlier, it hurt like hell when the combined pain finally registered in my brain.

“Why are you whining? And how the hell did you get those bruises?”

Kia grabbed my face in both of her hands and turned it right and left to observe the bruises with her own eyes, without giving me a chance to recover from her punch.

“Ow! Ow! Ow! That freaking hurts, you gorilla!” I swatted her hands away in irritation.

“Oh? And it felt like an out of this world experience when you were getting punched earlier?” Kia scoffed. “Come on. Get your ass to your room so I can get some ice on those bruises before they start to darken.”

For once, I didn’t argue with my smarty pants sister and went upstairs to my room, right at the end of the hallway. I took a quick shower because I didn’t want to smell like alcohol when my sister came up and hear more of her rant.

Finally, I sat on the edge of my bed and closed my eyes for a second, just letting the familiar scents of the surrounding sink in.

It’s not that I missed home or anything; I was here just last month during semester break and I couldn’t have run to the dorm faster when new semester started because whenever I am home, I am always reminded of just how perfect my about-to-be doctor older sister was and how much of a loser I was in comparison to her.

Because not only had Kiara just graduated med school, she was also dating a Cardiac Surgeon and I’ve been hearing proposal rumors for quite some time now. So compared to her, my love life was a disaster and a favorite topic of discussion that my relatives often liked to bring up at family dinners.

“Here.”

Startled at the cold against my cheek, I looked to the side to find Kiara taking a seat next to me with a huge sigh as she held out a cup of hot chocolate in front of my face.

“Marshmallows?” I asked, peeking into the cup to look at the fluffy white goodness at the top.

“Four. Just how you like it.” She sighed again. “So? What’s up with you? Why are you home on a Friday night rather than being up in some poor girl’s alley?”

“Eww! Kia!” I shuddered at her choice of words. “Since when are you so blunt?”

“Since my brother started whoring around with a different girl every week.” She took a sip of the hot chocolate before finally handing the cup to me.

“You’re saying that like you never had your little ‘phase’ before settling for that doctor.”

“Well…I haven’t settled either…not yet anyway.”

That had me frowning. “Trouble in paradise?”

The ice pack felt good against my cheek, especially now that I was starting to feel the bruise forming. When I had gone after Night’s ex…I hadn't really thought about it much except that I needed to get him away from Night at all costs. Knowing his story with Night made me regret not hurting him harder…but right now, I didn’t want to think about it.

That’s why focusing on Kia and her problems, bickering with her like a kindergardenth kid…it felt nice for a change. It helped me distract myself from the obvious elephant in the room.

“You can put it that way…I just got accepted into Alberta Medicave as a Resident.” She shrugged casually, making my eyes widen in surprise.

“Fucking hell! So you just wanted to brag about you getting your dream job?” I frowned at her. “And here I thought it was something serious!”

“It is serious…” Kia sighed, turning to face me. “Rick doesn’t want me to be a doctor. He thinks that if we’re both too busy with our job…we won’t have time for each other.”

“And you believe that?” I asked her incredulously. “You actually believe what that prick is trying to tell you?”

I knew there was a reason why I never liked that snobbish heart surgeon! Now it’s becoming increasingly unclear as to why he’s dating my sister in the first place! It’s like he’s trying to stop her from progressing further…stem her growth! He feels threatened by her success, so he’s trying to bring her down! Cheap motherfucker!

“I don’t believe him for a second and that’s why I’m kinda glad you’re here.” Kia smirked. “Grandmother and Aunt are coming over this Sunday and I think Rick might use that opportunity to ‘propose’ that idea to them. Even if he doesn’t propose to me, the very idea of me marrying him will make both Gramma and Aunty really, really happy and then they’ll force mom to get me to withdraw from my job.”

“And you want me to be the distraction?” I asked deadpan.

“Well…as long as you’re here, you’re their favorite child to drag through the mud.” Kia shrugged. “The rest I can handle.”

“So you’d rather distract the elders than face your problems head on?” I raised my eyebrows. “Shouldn’t you be talking to your boytoy instead?”

“Like I said, I’ll deal with it later.” Kia gave me a wink and a sly smile. “You just focus on being the distraction.”

She then pressed the ice pack back on my cheeks. “Now…let’s talk about you shall we?”

“Me? What’s there to talk about me?” I frowned at her sudden change in subject.

“Well, for starters…tell me what you did for you to end up bruised and back home on a Friday night, that too only one month into the new semester.”

Shit!
