Kai’s P.O.V

With the campus competition nearing, the student council room was a buzz of activities as the theme for the next photoshoot were being selected.

Finally, after an hour of pondering, the theme selected was ‘prom’ and we didn’t really have any clothes to select since everyone would be bringing their prom dresses from high school, or just buying new ones…in case the old one didn’t fit.

So far, from the online voting forum, three couples with the lowest scores had already been eliminated and now, only eight couples remained who would go on to the next round and once again, three would be eliminated until the last five couples went on stage for the final round, not only showing off their good looks, but their special talents as well.

“Will you be singing this year too?” Tina asked me, without taking her eyes off the computer where she was busy typing away the theme for the next photoshoot so that the other contestants would be made aware of the conditions.

“I think I’d go with dancing.” I shrugged. “I was forced to take ballroom dance lessons as a kid, all thanks to my sister, so I’d rather put my talent to use than do the same thing this year as well.”

“Hey…how do you know he’s even going to ascend to the next round?” Zach complained, fixing her with a glare.

“Umm…hello? He’d the reigning champion for how many years now?” Yin rolled her eyes. “Besides, did you see his ranking? He’s topping the charts once again, thanks to his ‘eligible bachelor’ status. All the women are going crazy over him, especially his photo in his trunks.”

“But you have to be careful of the new guy too.” Tina warned, finally ditching her computer to turn towards me. “You have some serious competition.”

“Which new guy?” I raised my eyebrows. “Everyone’s new except for me and Ruby.”

“I meant Ruby’s partner.” Tine clicked on her computer until an image of the voting appeared on the screen. “See there? You guys are just twenty votes apart. If this keeps up…you might have to give up your crown to your ex-roommate.”

Rather than being irritated, as they were hoping I would be, I felt a smile creep up my lips. “I really hope Night wins. That way, I’d no longer have to deal with this shit every year. It’s unfair on the freshmen as well, since the competition is supposed to be for them.”

“Not really,” Yin shrugged. “The competition rules are different for different colleges, but ours states that the previous winners have to participate. Maybe the rules were made by someone who didn’t want to let go of their crown? But now, we all have to abide by it.”

“Can’t we terminate this rule from the list?” I looked at Zach for help, since he was the President. “We’re the Student Council, aren’t we? If we take this issue to the principal…maybe he will listen to our side of the story and cancel this ridiculous rule?”

“Well…it’s too late for that this year,” Zach shrugged, leaning back in his chair. “But next year, definitely. We can give it a try, only if the winner of this competition agrees.”

“And if Ruby wins…we all know that ain’t gonna happen.” Tina shook her head, going back to tying whatever it was that she was typing.

I sighed as well, leaning back in my chair as I thought about the impending competition. Honestly, I had no wish to participate after I’d won the first time, but these stupid rules kept on forcing me to.

I had no doubt that one of the only reasons why I was winning the competition was because of my ‘bachelor’ status, just like Yin had pointed out a little while ago. So…maybe if I…nah…with Night’s parent’s being the homophobic bitches they were, they would never be okay with me publicly announcing our relationship status to everyone.

“Kai?” A voice called out from the door, before a knock was heard. “Is Kai here?”

“Yeah, come in.” I called out to the woman, who turned out to be Saya Murakami, the woman who was my current partner. “Saya? What brings you here?”

“Kai, I need something to discuss with you about the theme for the next photoshoot.” She looked down at the ground shyly, her hands behind her back. “Can you…um…can we please talk outside?”

“Sure.” I nodded. “Why don’t you wait for me outside the club? I’ll be right there.”

“Okay,” she gave a small smile before turning and leaving through the door.

However, as soon as the door closed behind her, all eyes turned on me.

“What?” I frowned. “Say something, will you? You guys are freaking me out!”

“Oh! Don’t act like you don’t know what’s about to happen!” Zach snapped at me, sounding a bit pissed off. “Lucky fucker!”

“Hey! What did I do?” I looked around in confusion, but the environment remained the same. Zach looked frustrated as hell and the women just looked amused. “What?”

“She wants to propose to you.” Yin finally said on a sigh.

“Huh?” My frown deepened. “How can you tell? She just asked to talk about the next photoshoot, didn’t she? You all heard her!”

“Oh, don’t play the innocent bitch here!” Tina rolled her eyes, which…she’s been doing a lot lately. “Even a blind person would be able to tell what she’s up to! And to think a player like you wouldn’t get the hint? Who are you kidding?”

But no matter how much they tried to convince me about it, I really didn’t think that was what’s gonna happen…or had my ‘playboy’ senses abandoned me ever since I got into a serious relationship with Night?

“Go on!” Zach encouraged, but that frown remained on his forehead. “Why not just get it over with?”

“Dude? What the hell is wrong with you?” I frowned. “I’m not interested in her!”

“Says the guy who’s slept with girls left, right and centre!” He scoffed, turning his chair so he was no longer facing me.

That seemed even more odd for Zach. Usually he was always making jokes and stupid comments, but I hadn't seen him being…’moody’ for a better lack of terms, before.

Did he have a crush on Saya?

“Fine.” I sighed, running a hand through my hair. “I’ll go see what’s up.”

“Don’t forget to use-”

“Don’t you dare finish that sentence, Yin!” I gave her a glare before I stepped out of the Student Council room, but Saya was nowhere in sight.

I little confused and worried, since it was evening and the campus was almost empty, I went outside the building to find her pacing the sidewalk outside. She looked nervous, but otherwise, she was fine.

“Saya?” I called out, as I made my way towards her.

She looked startled as she heard my call, but then she looked relieved as she made her way towards me as well.

“Kai!” She spoke in a rush, sounding a little out of breath. “I’m so glad you came out!”

“Huh?” I raised my eyebrows at her. “Weren’t you the one who-”

And that’s when I saw a bouquet of roses in her hands that weren’t there before.

“Wait a minute…what do you think you-”

“I really don’t have time to explain!” She whispered urgently, as she thrust the bouquet into my hands. “I’ll explain later! Just please…bear with me!”

“But what do I-”

Before I could finish that sentence, Saya suddenly let out an unnaturally loud giggle/squeal as she took the bouquet out of my hands.

“Oh my goodness! For me! Baby! You shouldn’t have!”

Wait a minute…baby? What the hell?

“Say-”

“Of course I’ll go on a date with you, silly!” Once again, she cut me off with that high pitched voice, leaving me utterly confused. “This Sunday sounds perfect!”

And then she all but jumped into my arms, and I had to catch her quickly to support both of our weight so that we didn’t go tumbling to the ground.

“I’m so sorry about this!” She whispered against my ears. “But tell me if you see a boy in a blue hoodie on the other side of the road.”

Looking across the road from the building, I did indeed find a boy in a blue hoodie, who looked about the same age as me…and he did not look pleased.

“Yeah…but…”

“Just keep pretending until he goes away! Please!”

As I wrapped my arms around Saya, to make the act believable, because she sounded desperate enough to put on this whole act, I moved my eyes to the side…and stilled.

“Fuck!”

Because there was none other than Night, with his backpack slung over his shoulder as he watched the whole ordeal while standing only a few feet away from the guy in the blue hoodie.

And his expression was nothing sort of murderous as he turned and walked away from us.

Shit…
