Kai’s P.O.V

“Why didn’t you tell me you’re taking him to the hospital? I could’ve gotten there to take you guys. Damn, now I feel like the asshole for telling you off earlier!”

I let out a sigh, massaging my temples as I listened to Cole ramble on as I sat outside of Night’s room. “It’s fine.” I told him. “I got him here just fine and hailing a cab was much faster than calling you to haul ass. Besides…you were right. You have your own life and I shouldn’t keep on bothering you just when it’s convenient for me.”

“Hey…hey! There you go again, making me feel like the asshole!” Cole’s voice was clipped, like he too was frustrated with this whole conversation. Well, that makes two of us.

“Not doing it on purpose.” I sighed yet again. “Listen…I’ll call you later. I need to go check up on Night, okay? Bye. Goodnight.”

“Hey! Wait, Ka-”

I disconnected the call before he could continue and I then turned the phone on airplane mode just so no one could disturb me for the time being.

And then I sat in the hallway outside the room while the doctors checked up on Night, my head held in my hands as I regretted not bringing him here sooner.

Fuck!

What had I been thinking! I should’ve just hauled him out of that fucking pool and brought him to the hospital this afternoon, when Trey himself had told me that he wasn’t doing well to the point where he had fainted before being taken to the nurse’s office!

Why did Night have to be so stubborn? Why did he have to go to this darn photoshoot so badly that he almost fell prey to Ruby’s manipulations!

What if I hadn't arrived on time? What if Ruby had done something nasty? Didn’t Zach have enough sense as to arrange different timings for photoshoots for the boys and girls knowing that there was only one changing room?

All the possibilities and regrets came crashing down onto me at that very moment, haunting me as I thought about all the time I had wasted when I should’ve dragged him here in the first place.

But then the sound of the door opening snapped my attention to the two doctors emerging from the room, and I stood up immediately, my eyes trying to look past them at the figure sleeping on the bed.

“How is he?” I asked them both, my voice a hoarse whisper from the weight of my emotions.

“Are you a family member?” The senior doctor asked, but my sister and I both interjected at the same time.

“No.”

“I…I’m his roommate.” I told him, after telling Kia that it was alright. “I have left a message with his parents but they weren’t home and I don’t have their personal contact information, so I have no idea when they’ll even be here. For now, I’ll be his caregiver.”

Thanks to me being the vice-president of the Student Council, the least I had been able to get from the main office was Night’s contact information where his house phone had been registered during admission. However, the maids at their house had informed us that his parents were away and they didn’t know when they would return.

I had also been told that they were busy people and they didn’t like it when someone unknown contacted them…which was absolutely fine, but not even to inform them about the condition of their son? That part had struck me as insanely odd.

“Please,” I begged the doctor, making my sister give me a side-eyed glance. “It’ll be really helpful if I knew how my friend was doing.”

“His fever is very high so we’re currently trying to monitor it,” the senior doctor told me, his expression sympathetic. “But he should’ve had treatment sooner, or it wouldn’t have come to this point.”

“It also appears that the fever may have been caused due to stress,” he added after going through the charts. “Some of his blood works are off the charts. Any idea what could’ve caused this?”

This part struck me as odd.

Fever due to stress? But why? What was he so stressed about?

There wasn’t an exam in sight just yet, since the semester only just began, and class tests weren’t that bad that he would get this bad a fever because of it…

Was it the contest? The fucking beauty pageant in college that got his so worried?

“Umm…it’s just normal stuff, doctor…” I gave him an awkward reply, being as vague as I can. “He’s new and chose a different stream than what he initially wanted. So he’s probably having difficulty keeping track in class.”

“I see.” The doctor gave me a tight smile, nodding his head. “Well, we’re going to keep monitoring him for the next seventy-two hours and then only we can think about discharging him. Till then, I can’t say for sure where this is going. Dr. Kiara, please make a report as soon as you can.”

“I will, Dr. Palmer,” Kia gave a small bow to the senior doctor. “Thank you so much for assisting me.”

As Dr. Palmer walked away to tend to other patients, my sister turned to face me, her expression tense. “Kai-”

“Just…give me a second, okay?” I cut her off before she could ask me too many questions. “I’ll be right back.”

Without looking at her, I strode past her and entered Night’s room, closing the door on my way in.

Thanks to my sister’s connections, I had been able to admit him in a cabin room. Besides, his parents were supposed to be crazy rich, right? So they wouldn’t have problems paying for it later.

But for now…I needed to see him, to make sure that he was alright.

I approached the bed with caution, afraid that any sudden noise could wake him up.

He looked pale against the white sheets and the light blue of the hospital gown wasn’t helping him look his best either.

Was it weird that I was focusing more on how he looked right now? Was it some kind of coping mechanism for all the times I failed to look after him? I didn’t understand…

All I knew was that I didn’t like it, one bit. I didn’t like how lifeless he looked sleeping on this bed.

I didn’t like it when he wasn’t up and around making my life miserable with his dirty jokes and his constant pestering about how he would totally have sex with me if I let him.

“Wake up, damnit.” I whispered; my throat raw with emotions. “Wake up so we can start again from where we left off…wake up so I can tell you just how much I’m missing you right now, you stupid idiot!”

I touched his hand lightly, afraid that if I woke him up, he’ll feel even worse. But thankfully he didn’t wake up, and even though I really wanted to see him open his hazel eyes and look up at me with that mischievous smile…it was better that he got the rest he needed and recovered as fast as he could, so everything could go back to how it was.

Leaning down, I brought my face closer to his, and placed a tentative kiss to his forehead, feeling his heated skin under my own.

“Get well soon.” I whispered against his forehead, before I stood up straight and headed back to the door, with one last glance in his direction to see that he was indeed sleeping.

However, where I had anticipated to see just my sister’s angry face standing outside, waiting for me to have a proper explanation as to what was even going on…I opened the door to find two new faces right outside the door, both looking impatient and irritated.

“Finally!” The older man who looked to be my father’s age snapped at me. “How long must I wait to see my own son, you bloody fag! Get out of my way!”

My mouth hung open in shock as I tried to process what I just heard.

Did Night’s father…just call me a ‘fag’?

“Hey!” Kia was beside him in an instant, standing in front of me in an almost protective manner. “How dare you talk to my little brother like that? I’ll have you know, he’s the reason that your son is even alive right now!”

But instead of feeling sorry for their behavior or being remorseful in the least bit…Night’s father, who had an uncanny resemblance to his son that I just noticed, smirked at me as he looked at me from head to toe.

“Huh!” He shook his head, exchanging a look with his wife who looked like she hardly ever got to express her own opinions in the first place. “So you’re his newest attraction…his latest fuck buddy. Should’ve known.”

Wow…so much for the perfect first impression.
