The Bad Boy's Dirty Little Secret BL Chapter 88: Slivers of Confidence
Kai’s P.O.V
I sat next to the bed as Kia set up the IV drip on the other side. I watched as she fiddled with the bag and the drip stand and looked away when she set up the channel in Night’s arm. But I knew my sister was a quick worker and in no time, she was finishing up already.
“He needs to rest and be taken care of properly,” she said as part of her final reminders. “I really think that the hospital can treat him better, but I guess this will suffice too. I’ll stay for a bit to see if the medication is working.”
But I was only half-listening to what she was saying. I couldn’t help but think of how this happened; from the way Rosalie suddenly appeared to upend our otherwise relatively peaceful lives, to his father taking control of his life from behind the scenes, pushing his son away from personal happiness.
How could I possibly help him out? When it comes down to it, I was starting to realize how powerless I really was.
His father was too big an entity for us to fight. That unfair monster, using Avery to cut Night off from the agency to try and ruin his career. It was a heartless move.
Unfortunately, it was working, and now Night was hiding his feelings of hurt and disappointment, and all these ugly emotions manifesting in the form of physical sickness. It made me feel even more helpless that no matter how much I tell him that I’d stay beside him…in the end, I was powerless to truly help him.
“I’m not in the place to prescribe medication without proper blood tests,” Kia was saying, “but I can give you some over-the-counter treatment. I’ll be leaving some acetaminophen that you can give him when he wakes up. Take note of the time of intake, and be careful not to give him too much. High doses can cause kidney damage. This should lower his temperature within 1 to 2 hours, give or take.”
I tried so hard to pay attention to what my sister was saying because I knew this was important, but my mind just could not help but keep wandering.
“So, to change the IV drip, of course you have to make sure your hands are clean. There’s no need for gloves, just make sure you wash your hands thoroughly. To prep the new bottle, you should first remove the cover and disinfect the rubber port. You can use alcohol swabs to do this. Then you close the roller clamp of the previous administration set.” She gestured a downward rolling movement. “This keeps the liquid from leaking into the spike. See this here? You have to fold this tube near the spike to keep air from entering the tube.”
I nodded absentmindedly, and even though she looked hesitant, trying to gauge whether I was actually paying attention to what she was saying, she continued anyway, “It’s important that you don’t get any air in, okay? It can be dangerous to Night. So now with that done, you should insert the spike so that the pointed end of it is inside the bottle. But don’t touch the spike, or else it might cause some infections and other contaminatio—”
I suddenly got up from my seat as a thought came over me, interrupting Kia’s spiel and making her jump in place and stop mid-sentence.
“What?” Kia asked, annoyed at my sudden interruption. “Were you even listening to me, Kai? I’m trying to help you over here.”
“Kia, listen,” I told her seriously. “I have something important that I need to do. Can you take care of Night in the meantime so I can head out?”
Kia frowned, “Go out? Now? Where? How long is it going to-”
“I don’t have time to explain right now, Kia.” I urged. “Just…please take care for him for me. Don’t let him out of your sight.”
“Wait-but…Kai!” But I didn’t wait for her to respond, already knowing that she was going to take care of Night while I was away without needing to hear some verbal confirmation, but before I could step outside the apartment, she caught my hand, making me stop in my tracks.
She met my eyes, a knowing glint in them. “Don’t do anything rash,” she warned, her voice soft but firm. “You will regret it later on. Remember that Night’s father is a powerful man, and we don’t really know how powerful he is or how far his reach goes. So before you do anything at all…think!”
“Kia, I’ve been silent for far too long,” I told her now, removing her hand from mine. “And look what happened to Night. I can’t let this go on forever. And if I don’t act now, things will never change, and in fact, they will only get worse.”
“But Kai—” she tried to say something, but I cut her off.
“I will be fine,” I promised. “You don’t need to worry about anything, okay? This is just something that I must do by myself. I have to confront Jonathan Winters. I’m done sitting in the shadows and let Night deal with everything alone.”
Kia didn’t look any more convinced than she was a second ago, but still, she nodded her head. “Okay. But be careful, alright?” She said on a sigh, unwilling to let me go but knowing there was no other choice.
“Take care of Night,” I said on my way out. “Never open the door unless it’s me.”
I got into my car and started the engine, pulling out of the driveway. Every single thing that had happened to us leading to this moment rushed inside my head, and a wave of anger crashed over me like a tidal wave. I tried to keep a level headed as I drove into the freeway, but it was honestly quite difficult, trying to force myself not to see red.
I don’t know if going to Jonathan’s office was a good idea, but I switched lanes and decided to head towards his house first instead. I wanted to talk to Night’s mother in hopes that she can at least help me in convincing his father. I didn’t know how eager she was to support her husband’s bad attitude, but based on what Night had told me about his past, his mother seemed to at least have some sympathy for him, and I was holding on to that hope.
When I got to the gates of the estate, the guards there waved for me to stop. When one of them went over to my side of the car, I rolled my window down, I couldn’t help but notice the large gun at his back.
Fuck. If a guy needed this much security…he had to be knee deep in some high profile shit.
“State your name and the purpose of your visit,” he told me in a bored tone.
“I need to see Jonathan Winters,” I said insistently.
“Have you had any prior visits?” he asked as if he had relayed this to a thousand people already. “Appointments?”
“I don’t need one.” I said, sounding more confident than I felt. “I am Kai Hunter. Night Winters’ boyfriend. And I need to see Jonathan Winters right now.”
The guard paused when he heard my name, and he exchanged a glance with his partner, a glance that told me that they already knew my name.
How could that be possible? It’s not like a man like Jonathan would go about telling people about his family’s dirty little secret. Then how could they possibly know me?
“You may enter.” The man nodded and went back inside to open the gates for me.
A sense of dread settled in the pit of my stomach as I went in through the gates. Something about this whole scenario didn’t seem right…as if I was walking right into some kind of trap set by that conniving bastard.
I parked haphazardly, not bothering to check if I was blocking any driveways or crushing blades of landscaped grass. I was feeling a bit confident as I marched up the porch, but as soon as I strolled inside the grand mansion, that sliver of confidence started to melt away.
I felt self-conscious, standing there in a shirt and jeans while everyone else was wearing fancy suits. Even the housekeepers looked fancier than me as they opened the doors for me to enter.
However, when I finally entered the living room was when I realized something important…I just may have walked into a carefully crafted trap.
