Kai’s P.O.V

The living room was decorated to perfection, almost as if the whole place came straight out of a high-end lifestyle magazine. Comfy, oversized sofas with soft, embroidered pillows were centered around a sleek marble coffee table, catching the light from a stunning crystal chandelier overhead.

The walls featured eye-catching modern art, adding pops of color against the room's more neutral-toned velvet curtains. Huge windows let in tons of natural light, showing off the manicured garden just outside. From the cozy fireplace to the shiny hardwood floors, every part of the room felt stylish yet super welcoming.

But all that grandeur was not the thing that left me stunned. It was the sight of the three people before me, as if they were waiting for me this whole time.

There sitting on one of the sofas, was Jonathan, and beside him was his wife, as well as none other than Rosalie.

Now that I saw her again, this time in a proper light and all dolled up, I could admit to myself that she was a drop-dead beauty. Seated gracefully, she wore a gorgeous dress that draped elegantly over her petite frame, the fabric pooling softly at her feet and catching the light with a delicate shimmer. It hugged her figure as she sat, accentuating her poise.

Her makeup was flawlessly done, a hint of highlighter giving her skin a radiant sheen, while her eyes were defined with subtle warm tones that made them stand out without overwhelming the look.

Her lips, painted in a deep, sophisticated shade, drew attention without overpowering her understated elegance. Even in stillness, she seemed to exude effortless beauty and grace.

Maybe if I hadn’t met Night, I would have fallen for her in an instant. But that was how I knew that Night was my true love: even that traitorous thought made me realize that everything else had been nothing but physical attraction for me, because in all my past relationships, I had never been able to settle down, never been able to emotionally connect.

I had always felt like something was missing, like I was doing something wrong, and I couldn’t quite put my finger on what it was. No matter how gorgeous a woman, even Rosalie’s beauty, meant nothing when it came to my Night.

Now that I knew where my real happiness lay, I could never look at another person and ever dream about holding them in my arms, not when my mind, body and soul belonged to only one man.

“Have a seat,” Jonathan was the first to speak, breaking me out of my swirling thoughts. “I hadn’t exactly been expecting you, but since you were the one who showed up instead of Night, then… I guess I would like to have a discussion with you instead.”

Every time I looked at him I always seemed to feel a flash of anger. This man was the reason why Night kept on suffering. He kept on making his life difficult by the second. But now I patiently took a seat, knowing that shouting and showing him my anger would not do me any good.

I kept my calm as I settled into the couch opposite Night’s father, waiting for him to speak first. After all, I was here to ask him why he was so hell-bent on separating Night and me, so I couldn’t throw tantrums just yet.

“Dear, what would you like to have?” Night’s mother asked as she peered up at me through her long lashes, momentarily taking a break from her cell phone. “Coffee, tea, or plain water?”

Something about her tone grinded my gears. She sounded like a robot, like she couldn’t care less about what I was going to answer anyway and just wanted to get that out of the way.

Resisting the urge to roll my eyes and possibly cause an early round of conflict, I tried not to snap as I said, “I’m not here for the pleasantries, Mrs. Winters. I’m here for a serious discussion, about Night.”

Jonathan had the gall to chuckle. His gaze on me was condescending; it made me want to wipe that smirk off his at all costs, to hell with formalities. “If a serious discussion is what you want, then I’m here to tell you now: I want you to leave Night alone, kid.”

I couldn’t help but laugh at him, at that unserious sentence. “Really?” I asked. “What, are you gonna offer me money next to bribe me into leaving your son alone just like in those Korean dramas?”

But Jonathan didn’t appreciate my little quip, because all fake humor vanished from his face, replaced with a tight frown. “This isn’t a joke, kid,” he barked at me. “And if Night’s failed modeling career wasn’t enough of a lesson for him and you, then I will have to withdraw Night from school next to show you just how far I can go to separate the two of you.”

Anyone else would’ve fallen for his shit, and to be honest, even as I cocked an eyebrow, my head tilting to the side to study this proud man with his humongous ego, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of dread coiling in the pit of my stomach. He was truly outrageous, trying to do everything he possibly could to keep us apart. But why was he so hell bent on such an action?

I was starting to believe that his want to keep Night away from me wasn’t just his homophobia, but something deeper that none of us could really see.

“Cut the bullshit,” I told him straightforwardly, as I watched with sick satisfaction when the smugness drained from his face. “You thought I would buy that bluff? Night already told me that he was the one who paid the university fees himself, and that’s because of his own hard work with his modeling gigs, and not from you.”

Jonathan’s face morphed into something that was at the midpoint of indignation and surprise. And for the first time, I saw his mother raise her eyebrows at me, showing some kind of interest in this twisted banter.

“Are you truly his father? The one that shares his blood and flesh?” I asked. “Because to me you seem more like a monster than a parent. Just how far are you willing to go with all your tricks until you realize that Night will never be happy with the life that you’re forcing him to live? Or do you know that already and still wish doom upon your only son? Because that’s even fucking worse.”

But Jonathan, now more collected, seemed unfazed. “Happiness is all circumstantial. It is something that takes time and will always be there when you finish the cycle of your life. What Night needs is a family, someone to carry on his legacy, and that is something that you can never, ever give him.”

To say that I was taken aback would be an understatement. I was appalled at the way he thought. He seemed so sure that he was justified in his arguments.

A child? A legacy? That was all he was after? Had he never heard of surrogacy? Or was he merely presenting this fact to win an argument? How could someone so cruel be someone’s father?

“There are ways to have a child even while being in a relationship with same-sex couples!” I argued. “I love Night; I am willing to do anything so you can stop bothering him and let him live his life peacefully! I will do anything, but I won’t give him up.”

“Then, answer me,” Jonathan said, leaning forward in his seat. “What are you truly able to give Night, huh? Money? Money that you still need from your parents? Prestige? A name to go by? What do you have?”

He looked at me up and down with disgust, grimacing and turning his nose. “In the state you’re in right now.”

But I had an answer to that; “I can offer him my love.”
