The Bad Boy's Dirty Little Secret BL Chapter 58: A New Gig
Night’s P.O.V
“There! Now that looks a lot better.” I stood back to admire the new bed, glad that the room looked a lot better than what it used to be.
“Seriously, Night! You didn’t have to buy a new bed!” Kai sighed, running a hand through his hair before he wiped away at the perspiration beading his forehead. “It’s really expensive.”
“All you had was a mattress and a closet.” I told him, pointedly. “Adding a few pieces of furniture won’t be a bad thing and since I’m being the freeloader, the least I can do is add to the décor.”
Kai had been able to move out of the dorm successfully and now insisted on paying the rent on my behalf. Since the apartment wasn’t all that big, and it was still ten minutes away from campus, so the rent was considerably cheaper as well. However, that didn’t make me feel all that good about being a burden to Kai.
I knew why he was doing this, and as much as I admired him for trying to protect me, I was still as independent as I was before and him not allowing me to do shit was only going to make me feel frustrated.
“Night, you’re not being a freeloader.” Kai looked exasperated as he turned to me. “This apartment belongs to you just as much as it does to me.”
“But you won’t let me pay rent.” I shrugged. “So I bought the bed instead.”
“My parents are already paying the rent!” He threw up his hands before plopping onto the bed. “And the mattress was fine. We were sleeping just fine. You shouldn’t be wasting money like this now that-”
“I know, I know. I shouldn’t be spending too much since I walked out of that house and I refuse to take money from my dad,” I rolled my eyes as I sat on the bed next to him. “And I’m not taking his money either. The bed? I got that from my own money that I saved up in my account from my modeling gigs.”
“And your new phone wasn’t cheap either.” He narrowed his eyes at me. “Shouldn’t you have just gotten a cheaper cell?”
“Hell, no.” I frowned. “I’m not poor or broke…yet. I can spend well, as long as I get another gig. It’ll help me get right back on track and then we can have more furniture…maybe revamp the kitchen a bit.”
“Night, don’t even think about i-”
Before Kai could finish scolding me about my expenses, my new phone started to ring, interrupting our conversation.
I pulled it out of my pant pocket to find out that my Agent, Avery Clark was calling me. Possibly it was the gig that I was looking for.
“Give me a second.” Excusing myself from Kai, I went outside to the hallway to talk, since the apartment didn’t have a balcony, because of the large glass window in the room. It wasn’t difficult since we could always use the terrace if we needed space, but sometimes, it did cause a bit lack in privacy, especially when I had to take calls from my agent or a director for a gig.
“Avery,” I greeted my agent as I closed the door to the apartment and went down the hallway towards the window at the end, hoping that our neighbors wouldn’t be nosey enough to press their ears against the door for a sneak-peek of my conversation. “How’s it going? It’s been a while since I heard from you.”
“Good afternoon, Night, and sorry about not reaching out sooner.” I could hear the traffic on the other side of the phone, the constant honks on car horns and the sound of agitated people shouting at each other to ‘move it’. “But…I finally managed to get something that pays well.”
“That sounds great.” I felt my lips tilt up in a smile. “So? What is it and when do I show up?”
“Well…” I frowned when she hesitated.
“It’s not…porn, is it?” I whispered the ‘forbidden’ word, making sure to look around the hallways to make sure that no one was eavesdropping. “Ava! I think I made it clear to you that no matter how desperate I get, I’m not doing that shit!”
“Relax, relax! It’s not…porn!” She whispered back the word as well, which may be because she was either with someone or in a private commute. “It’s err…an underwear brand.”
“Oh.” I raised my eyebrows. “I see…”
An underwear brand. That wasn’t new. But if Ava was being this secretive…it probably wasn’t all that good news either.
“Please tell me it’s not g-strings.” I begged, remembering the last time when someone had worn a g-string at the school photoshoot and Kai had gotten all jealous.
“No, god, no!” She croaked. “Those things need to disappear for good! But…”
“Well, if you’re hesitating this much it’s either really bad or really good.” I sighed. “Do I take a pick?”
“It’s Hanes Summer collection.” She finally spilled the beans, causing me to almost chock on thin air.
“Come again?” I said, still trying to breathe past the ache in my throat.
“Yes, you heard it right.” She sighed. “They saw your image and were interested right away. I’m honestly so glad you got this gig, because it’s really high profile and high pay…but…”
“It’ll be on several magazines.” I breathed out through my teeth, making a whistling noise. “And the chances of my family finding out…are a lot higher.”
It wasn’t just about magazines, but some of the pictures often ended up being posters as well. And my dad-
I paused.
Why should I even care about what he feels like anyway? Did he ask me how I felt before he set me up for an arranged marriage with his business partner’s daughter? Did he ask me how I felt when he constantly belittled my efforts and told me modeling wasn’t of any use for me since I will be taking over his business anyway?
I had spent most of my life trying to please my parents, to make sure they never had to feel ashamed of me. But in the end…I was the useless, insolent bastard, who had always disappointed him.
I bet that if I tried to take out money from my cards, I’d find them all frozen because my father was trying to teach me a lesson by trying to prove to me that I was nothing without his money. So this was just the opportunity I was looking for, to show him that I could survive on my own as well.
“I’ll take it.” I told her, without another second of hesitation. “Tell me when and I-”
“Today.” She replied hurriedly. “They need immediate assistance since one of their models fell sick. So we need you in an hour.”
“An hour?” I exhaled slowly. “Okay, never mind. Just send me the address and I’ll be there.”
“Thank you so much, Night!” Ava breathed a sigh of relief as well. “I’ll text you the address right away so you can make it on time. Hurry, please! This is a great opportunity. If they like you, they’ll hire you again.”
“I know, I know.” I reassured her. “I’ll get there right away. And Ava…thanks a lot.”
The call disconnected, but I felt hope blooming in my chest. Hanes were big and I bet they would pay a nice amount for the modeling as well, especially since I was going to be replacing their absent model last minute.
With a small smile playing on my lips, I turned around, ready to face the road ahead with determination…only to have my heart almost leap out of my chest.
“Where are you heading again?” Kai asked, arms folded across his chest as he raised his brows at me.
