Ayla

Peacemaker? Supportive friend? Daughter of your enslaver? I don't know what I am supposed to be doing or who I am supposed to be to Raven as I stand outside of Cyrus' apartment trying to force myself to knock. Thane and Cyrus are having an important meeting that I am not privy to yet. I could ask why, but I am trusting my mate in this situation. We also both agreed that maybe I should be with Raven after how Cyrus told us the information he had come to be. My heart hurts for Raven. I am just hoping she doesn't view me as the enemy.

My fist stays suspended in the air as I chew on my lip debating. The door flies open, and a red-eyed Raven answers. "How long are you planning on standing here?" she asks gruffly. "I don't know. I could have debated whether or not I should knock a little more actually." I fake a smile that probably looks pathetic as she opens the door wider and motions for me to enter the apartment.

A cursory once over leaves nothing to the imagination. This place is literally empty. One bed, a futon and that's it.

"Wow. Cyrus is pretty minimal, isn't he?" I ask, breaking the ice.

"No. He's always gone drinking and slutting around. Raven smacks the top of her bottle on the counter and the cap flies off across the room. She isn't handling her emotions well or this is just the method she chose to handle them. Talking would be better. Maybe we can get to that point.

"May I sit down?" I ask her nervously and she lifts her hand in a gesture. I sit on the futon and turn around on it so I can talk to her in the kitchen area. We say nothing as we look at each other. I don't know if it is a game of who can hold the gaze the longest, but it feels entirely too long.

"I suppose you are here to see if I am mad at you right? Or see if I am losing it? Huh? Are you here to see if I am losing it? Becoming destructive? Maybe burning something down? Which is it? Why are you here?" Raven is agitated and restless. She is still very upset, and I am sure Cyrus leaving doesn't help. No matter what she says.

"I am here because I am concerned for my friend. There isn't any other reason." I explain calmly. Raven continues drinking from her bottle. "I don't blame you, you know. It isn't your fault I was sold off and given what I know you went through, you should be upset with your father, not me." Raven places her bottle down on the counter. She didn't throw that, so I take it as a mood improvement and mind-link Thane about it.

"Are you mind-linking what I am saying?" Raven snarks at me apparently getting more paranoid. I was warned though.

"No. Thane was checking on me and I let him know that I am fine." Not a total lie

"He doesn't trust you here, with me?" Raven asks in an accusatory tone.

"He didn't say that. If he didn't trust you, I wouldn't be here." I explain hoping she relaxes a little.

"I don't consider Mikhail my father. I thought he was dead until I just found out recently that he wasn't and that he was the leader of the ring." I close my eyes trying to calm my emotions that want to rise.

"Why did he do it? Sell you off?" Raven cracks open another and the cap flying causes me to startle.

"He sold me off because I was 14 and shifted for the first time. I am something he is jealous of, so he put me into his probably long-established trafficking ring I knew nothing about. Why he didn't kill me is still a mystery of sorts." I smile grimly at her. Baring my soul before her.

"What is he jealous of?” she asks me curiously.

"He's jealous because I am fates gifted and he isn't." There. I shared a secret with her hoping that she will respect that I did and the reason behind it.

"What does that mean?" She asks, tilting her head in confusion.

"Throw something at me." I tell her. "You want me to throw something at you?" she repeats with furrowed brows.

"Yes. As your future Luna, I command you...wait no that's probably not how you say it. I...politely request that you throw that bottle there at me."

Raven rolls her eyes and picks up the beer bottle and chucks it at me. Within seconds, my blue orb is swirling between us, and the bottle bounces off of it and Raven ducks out of the way. It hits the cupboards above her and shatters. Raven stands there with wide eyes and mouth hanging open. She tentatively walks over to me, holding her hand out and runs her finger down the side of the shield I have made.

I let my shield down as she moves her gaze to me, mouth still open. "You're like me?" she asks in awe.

"That was my gifting from the fates. I have the power to shield and I can wield it as a weapon. I come from a line of blessed wolves, but the fates stopped passing the gifting among the pack and my family’s lines as well. Then I was blessed, and my father didn't like that. He killed my mother and sister and got rid of me." The wound wants to reopen. I feel warmth and reassurance like a tight hug through the bond. Thane more attuned to my feelings now that I am pregnant.

"So not like me. That's pretty messed up. What he did. I hope you get to kill him yourself." Raven stands closer to me, arms crossed over her chest.

"What do you mean not like you?" I asked, confused.

"I was experimented on because I am a female Alpha which hasn't happened in centuries. Whoever was running the show is experimenting with shifters and I heard them talking about giftings. Somehow, they made me fast. The others they experimented on die, and they throw them in ditches wherever they feel like it." Raven explains in a haunting whisper.

"How fast?" I ask, changing the subject so we don’t lose it. I am very emotional lately now that my hormones are all over the place.

"Pass me that bottle cap and stay out of the way." I do as I am told and move back into the kitchen area next to her. Raven motions her arm back throws the beer cap across the room. I see a puff of dust and can see dry wall fall to the floor before I hear a faint sound of something whizzing through the air. The bottle cap is imbedded into the wall.

"Holy shit that's fast! I didn't even see it leave your hand! No wonder Cyrus thinks you should be my bodyguard." I exclaim, my eyes wide in shock.
