Ayla

The storm swallowed everything as I broke through it, rain slick against my skin, lightning chasing the edges of my vision. The battlefield below had gone utterly still, every clash, every howl cut short as they turned upward to watch me fall. My snow-white hair whipped around me like a banner, my body glowing against the darkness, eyes blazing with blue fire that crackled and sparked with living power.

When I slammed into the ground, the impact cracked the earth wide open, fractures spider-webbing outward, glowing with the same blue fire burning inside me.. Energy crawled up my arms, bright blue arcs snapping like lightning, wrapping me in a storm of my own.

I lifted my hands, and the power answered, bursting from me in streams of electric-blue light. One by one, shimmering shields flared into being, encasing each of my pack members in spheres of living energy. My pack stood suddenly untouchable, safe from the uncle’s army that dared to face us.

I can’t allow myself to be distracted by my mate, who is savagely trying to get out of his shield.

I can't run to Raven as Cyrus holds his hands to her stomach.

I can’t comprehend why Rhonda is here.

They fought to the edge of the world for me.

Now it’s my turn.

Gasps and growls rippled through the enemy ranks, their hesitation thick enough to choke on. They had seen me as a stolen girl, a pawn, a secret to be hidden in shadows. Now they saw the truth. I am the storm given flesh, and every ounce of it stands between them and the people I love.

I didn’t wait. A massive wolf dared me by lunging at one of my shielded pack members. I threw my hand in his direction, and a surge of energy shot out, wrapping the attacker in arcs of electric power that made him stumble back, howling; the energy didn’t kill, not yet, but it threw him violently to the mud, staggering, dazed. “Retreat now and live. Stay and die by my hand.” My echoes with power. A blend of mine and Aramana’s now that we are whole, one, and function to our given full potential while using our power. One last attempt for them to change their path.

The answering snarl makes the decision for them.

The first wolf lunged from the side, fangs bared. I slammed my foot to the ground, and blue energy burst through the cracks in the ground directly in front of him. Arcs of electricity licked across the wolf’s body, searing muscle and nerve. It convulsed violently before collapsing into the mud, twitching one last time.

I was already moving.

Shifters tried to flank me, rifles raised. I compressed the energy in my hands into a spear of pure blue lightning and hurled it forward. It struck one man through the chest and continued straight into another. Their screams were cut short; bodies collapsed, soaked and smoking, weapons useless in the mud.

Another wolf charged from behind a burning SUV. Tendrils of energy shot from my arms, wrapping around its legs like chains. Sparks tore through fur and muscle as the wolf slammed into the ground. I overloaded the surge, arcs lancing through its chest, and death claimed it.

A shifter wielding a blade rushed me. I spun, arcs leaping outward, and slammed power like a hammer into his midsection. It tore through him, snapping bones and burning flesh, hurling him back into a tree. Bullets started firing wildly, bouncing off the shielded pack members.

I didn’t flinch.

I projected a straight, blade-like arc of my power, slicing through the attacker’s torso. He crumpled, silent, lifeless.

I moved in bursts, my power bending to my will in hammer strikes, whip-like arcs, spear projections, lethal  pulses. Wolves collided into each other, guards torn apart mid-motion. Bullets fizzled uselessly against the protective spheres around my pack.

My pack remained untouched, glowing spheres bright against the dark battlefield.

Rain plastered my hair to my face, the thunder hammering above like the drums of war. My arms ached from holding the energy, from hurling arcs of blue lightning that tore through flesh and bone. My lungs burned with every breath. Every wolf felt the raw edge of my power.

My pack’s spheres shimmered around them, alive and protective, but I could feel it, deep in my chest, the pull, the constant tug toward him.

My mate.

The thought of him made my muscles tighten, my control waver, even for a heartbeat. The temptation was sharp, gnawing, a call to abandon this destruction and just run to him.

I let a shudder pass through me and released them. Every shield around my pack dissolved, safe, intact, but I kept one. Lethal blue energy hovered in my palm, humming with raw potential. My eyes blazed brighter, pulsing blue with the surge of my power.

The power arcs crackle along my arms as the mate bond pulses with need.

Desperate longing.

I feel his love, his awe, and his rage for me. I feel the need to protect the life inside of me.

He runs toward me.

I need him.

With a sharp inhale, I hurled spheres around the enemies. I let myself exhale, though my chest ached, and my eyes scanned the field, finally able to see them all at once. Each enemy was trapped in a glowing prison of energy, arcs snapping violently, sizzling in the rain. My power pulsed, connecting each sphere to my will.

I felt it, every heartbeat, every twitch of muscle beneath the arcs.

I let my energy hum, blue fire rippling along my arms. The shifter's eyes went wide, realizing too late that escape was impossible. I pushed my power, and his skull shattered, fragments sprayed outward in a storm of rain and blue sparks contained within his shield. The second followed almost instantly, then the third, each head exploding with precise, brutal finality. The rain hissed against the arcs, steam rising in.

One by one, heads exploded, bodies slumped, the final wolf’s eyes met mine, wide with terror, and I felt the faintest sting of pity, but it was fleeting. I pushed the last surge of energy inward, and its skull shattered violently, leaving nothing but a twitching body in the mud as my shields dissolved into nothing.

Bodies landing with a thud one by one.

The battlefield was silent, except for the storm and the hiss of rain on scorched earth.

I lowered my arms, chest heaving, sweat and rain dripping into my eyes.  My pack was safe. Every enemy was gone.

Except one.

I let myself finally breathe, letting the longing for him flow through me, aching and insistent, knowing that I had done what I had to do. They had fought to the end of the world for me, and I had shown what it truly meant when my power became lethal and unstoppable.
