I had spent four years of my life to complete my fashion school and it has become a big move to go live with my brother in Port Harcourt especially as a new graduate with no definitive next steps. “Umm…hello?” I was unsure how to approach this seemingly random stranger, his eyes snapped over and he gave me a curt nod.
“Miss, Fletcher?” He asked and I nodded.
“My name is David, your brother is unavailable today and he sent me to pick you up.” He introduced himself.
“That is lovely, did he happen to mention where you might be taking me? Because last I spoke to him, we were not going to be able to move into his new apartment until one month.” I said as I looked at the man expectantly.
He was in a full suit, he had the sign tucked under his arms while taking my luggage from me and started moving towards a car. My brother and I were very close growing up but our recent life choices had us mostly separated for a long time. We came from a troubled home with our narcissistic and abusive father and our weak complaint of a mother who put her father before anything, even us her children. Bryce couldn't stand living in our home, so at the age of twenty years, freshly out of high school, he enlisted into the army. I was eleven years old at the time and those years were my hell. He spent three years in training and then spent another six years in army special forces which means for a whole eight years, I barely saw my brother.
I left home at seventeen but not in the best way, I was desperate and my past showed it. I worked for a seamstress who taught me all about sewing and making clothes. I had always been pressured to look my best while growing up because my narcissistic father demanded it. He had an image to uphold in the public. I found love in fashion and used it as my outlet. My parents were against me going to fashion school so my father refused to pay. He wanted me to be a lawyer so he could brag about it. With the help of the goddess, I finally got the scholarship I needed to go to school in Asaba for the next three years.
It was my escape from my parents who I have long cut off but also to get away from the man I ended up living with when I was desperate to leave home. Freedom wasn't easy, though. I struggled with money and a lot of other things. Three years later, I am now twenty years and twenty-eight. The thing is that I had no idea of what he does for a living, I just knew he had money now but I feel like he is a stranger to me. He isn't the troubled teenager who left me, he is now a seasoned army veteran and a successful businessman all due to his best friend Callan Harold, the man who invaded all my dreams with some many kinds of sexual fantasies.
I met Callan years back when they both got into the military together, he has a successful family and apparently the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. I know him and my brother have a fast lifestyle now, I have seen him for a year, although he appears every day in my dreams. “Yes, Miss Fletcher. I was instructed to bring you to Mr. Harold's house for the time being.” David responded, bringing me back to reality.
What! Did he say Callan's house? Oh my goodness, this is not good at all.
“And where is that?” I asked, I was already sitting in the back seat of this expensive car.
“Rumuola Villa, located in the eastern part of Port Harcourt.” He replied.
As we got closer, the apex of a looming skyline high tower was becoming more and more visible. Reflective blue-glass eccentrically cut and shaped into unique angles. In fact all the buildings started to become jaw dropping.
“They got high end shopping and art and nice parks as well.” He continued.
“Does Mr. Harold lives in one of these high rises?” I leaned forward between the front seats and pointed through the windshield. He stubby finger on a particular building.
“That is Rumuola Villa, it is impressive.” He looked up like he was seeing the building for the first time and I was awestruck.
The shape was odd, curtains glass walls with a rectangular base but then it held a round curve to make the building almost look like a four leaf clover. I have never seen anything like it before, it surpassed the clouds, I swear.
“What kind of business does he own?” I tried to get information on the mysterious Callan Harold and I saw his almost black eyes shift up from the rear view mirror and then back on the road.
“A lot of different businesses,” that was the response he gave and when I further inquired, he distracted me.
“The building has a fifty-five fool pool, I am not kidding. I have read it in the magazine.” He muttered.
“Are you Mr. Harold's driver?” I decided not to push further anymore, I will get my answer in due time.
“I am more like a personal assistant.” He shrugged.
“How about my brother?” I pressed.
“I work for him too.” He replied and I nodded.
When we were at a traffic light, he suddenly started fishing in his console before pulling out a pamphlet.
“Here, read it.” He showed me the magazine he had previously mentioned.
We were still stuck in the traffic so why not try reading it. I looked at the pamphlet and the first big word I read was ‘Penthouse in the Sky. I continued reading and all the information on the Villa was quite interesting.
“That sounds like a lot.” I said absentmindedly as I continued to read on.
“You will find that Mr. Harold is….a lot.” He said, though I had no idea what he meant by that. I would have asked if he hadn't interrupted.
“Here,” he waved over a private entrance that I guess the penthouse floors have access to.
The garage looked seemingly normal until I realized the kind of cars that are parked there. Oh my world, where am I? I was just sharing one room with messy strangers for three years, I was overwhelmed. I feel inferior, I have spent too many years of my life that way.
