Chapter 85: You Have To Pay For It

Brianna

My task today was to run from one point to another to drop off a specific purse to a shoot that they forgot. And then from that point I was meant to go to another point to help clean up the piles of clothes left behind from a pull. A pull means when someone gets a whole shit load of clothes and accessories to pull some looks. They keep what they like and leave the rest as a mess for someone like me to gather up. I need to do that in a timely manner because Elizabeth told me she would let me come see this designer with her if I was done on time. I really wanted to make it on time so I was hauling ass.

The roundabout at the building was always crazy with cars, you can't cross it or you will most likely get struck by a car. Tourists don't know that there is an underground passage to get to the monument that is popular with tourists, so some people do try to run across the crazy road, and they drive crazy in my opinion. I ended up jumping out of the car with the bag slung under my arm and I did what I like to call the heel-jog that isn't a sprint but is faster than walking. I am in heels so it is a clicking rapidly kind of jog to the finish line. I practically threw the bag at the woman who eae already waiting for its arrival and then it was off to another point so I could collect everything left there. When I got to the rich woman's impressive house, I saw I had my work cut out for me. Three racks worth of clothes all strone about, heels, belts, sunglasses and all the goods just piled on the chair of some rich woman's house. The maid let me in, she had been expecting me, though the client wasn't there yet. I was cursing the woman in my head for being so messy, one by one I had to pick up the articles of clothing and put them back on hangers so I could bag up the rack to properly move the clothes from here back to the office. When I went to re-box the shoes, all were accounted for except for one. One shoe remained in the box and the other was gone.

There was a list we were meant to check to be sure our products come back to us if they aren't purchased by the client. I need those damn shoes, it cost seven thousand and that would be coming out of my paycheck if I wasn't able to return it to Elizabeth. I started looking around the room and under the bed, I opened the women's personal closet to be sure nothing got mixed in but I found nothing. I walked outside of the room and darted my eyes around like somehow the shoe would just be sitting there. I am not supposed to wander around a client's house but I cannot leave without that shoe. I started walking down the long hall and peeking quietly into the rooms whose doors were open. With the closed doors, I would knock but I received no answer from any of them. I had no choice but to open them a crack to peek inside. The first room was some bedroom that looked pretty unused so I doubted it would be in there.

I decided to ask the maid if she could look around downstairs or around whichever entry the car used to deliver everything. She spoke very little English but I waved the one shoe at her and we communicated by common sense. Time was running out and I really wanted to make it to that designer. So I just started walking into rooms in that all until I opened a door and it was a child's room I walked into. I cringed when I realized a small child was sleeping in the bed. I was about to tip toe back out until my eyes caught something discarded on the floor. The shoe, I sighed in relief and grabbed it. Walking back out of the room, I suddenly came eye to eye with the woman who looked surprised to see a stranger leaving her child's room. Fair enough, she began yelling at me in their language and I quickly showed her the shoe, trying to tell her who I was, which I don't even know if she understood. She started saying something in English and I finally got her to hear me out, showing her my credentials of working for Elizabeth Addams. When her madness was settled, I was finally able to look at the shoe and gasped when I did. There was a stain, a smear of something indecipherable, chocolate who.

“Ma'am?” I called after her, she walked into her room, the one I was repacking everything so I followed her in.

“It seems your child had taken one of our shoes and it was ruined.” I showed her and she immediately scowled at me.

“Unfortunately, we will have to add it to your bill.” I told, she pretended she couldn't understand and didn't know what I was talking about.

“You have to pay.” I said again and this time, I think she got to the point.

She instantly got belligerent again and was refusing, I didn't know what the heck to do so I took a picture of the damaged shoe and sent it to Elizabeth to explain the situation. The crazy woman continued to yell at me with the refusal of payment and I was being berated the whole time I was pulling the racks out of her room, having some of the staff help me carry them down the grand stair which were a lot of them. It was the craziest experience yet. I don't know very much about the language but I know by her tone of voice that she was saying some rude shit. Especially with how the staff was giving me looks of sympathy. When things were packed up, I was outside of the house when a man approached and saw the woman yelling. He said something to her in their native tongue and then he looked over at me and I braced myself for more yelling.

“My wife says you want her to buy things she doesn't want to.” The man said he had a heavy accent but he could clearly speak English. Thank goodness.

“No, sir. The child ruined a pair of the shoes, I was trying to explain that it would be added to the bill.” I replied.

“How much?” He asked.

“Seven thousand.” I muttered.

“No, problem.” He said pulling something out of his jacket, he counted the money out in front of me and slapped it into my hand.

“I am sorry, my wife screamed at you.” He smirked and I realized his tone was somewhat flirtatious and it was a little surprising to me but I just needed this payment and to get the hell out of there.

“For your troubles.” He said, pulling another one hundred notes and tucking it into my pocket. He did it so right in front of his wife, I thanked him and quickly got into the van with the drivers sent by our company to transport the clothes.

I had officially missed the designer meeting I could have been a part of and I was bummed out. But it also meant I could just go home, I updated Elizabeth that I received payment for the damage and she dismissed me. On my way down the street to my apartment, I stopped in the little bakery to pick up some bread and pastries for our lunch and dessert later. Jane and I have been indulging quite often and everything here is delicious. So how could we not? With the small bag in one arm and the keys in the other hand, I unlocked the door and walked straight to the living room.

“Jane, you have no idea what I have just been through. It was complete chaos.” I said, if she isn't in the living room, she would be in her room.

When she didn't immediately answer, I thought maybe she was out. She isn't expecting me home for a little while anyway and I just walked to the squared off counter that separated the kitchen. At the same time a figure appeared out of her room, one too large to be her. I gave a short scream and dropped the bag and my keys at the same time. The bag on the counter and the keys on the floor, the initial fright turned into shock as I tried to understand what I was seeing. Tall, dark hair, striking eyes and the aura of the smooth devil himself. A suit and smoky spiced cologne.

“What the hell!” That was all I managed to say as Callan's eyes pinned me in place.

I shook my head clear and started scrambling to pick everything up because the unexpected sight of him had just rocked me to my core and I couldn't look anymore.
