Chapter 162: To Protect You

Brianna.

“Trust me, Miss. Fletcher. I was only following orders.” The man said again and I kind of felt bad for him now.

“Well, sorry, I attacked you because I know the real people I should beat are Mr. Fletcher and Mr. Harold.”

I was pissed, who the hell do they think they are having someone follow me?

“Where are they now?” I asked him.

“I am sorry, I have no idea.” He replied.

I could tell this guy is clearly not some high ranking member. Still I wanted the element of surprise here since they like secrets so much. I grabbed the man's phone and texted my brother pretending to be him.

“Sir, I have a minor update about Miss Fletcher, may I come to you?” He replied, telling me to him at the Emerald lounge and to be quick about it. Oh I will. The man was fidgeting and pleading with me not to use his phone.

“They will beat me half to death for this.” He kept following after me.

“Then come with me, I will threaten them and if they touch you, I will spray them in the face.” I was feisty, the man almost looked amused.

The milk carton remained on the floor, so it is not like I will be having coffee right now.

“You got a car or something? We need to hurry up and get to the lounge.” I told him, he sighed and nodded.

“At your building.” He admitted to having a car, I don't even care that Callan would be there. He is also having his men follow me and I want to know why.

“Ma'am, this is a bad idea. Please, don't involve me in this.” He begged.

“You are already involved, it is better you be there than not be there. Trust me.” I shoved him along.

When we got to the door of the club that wasn't open, there were some guys guarding it.

“Can I help you?” One of them looked up and down.

“I am here to see Bryce.” I told him, his brows rose.

“He is expecting you?” He asked and then shifted his eyes to the nervous mess behind me.

“Seeing as I am his sister, yes, I think he is.” I acted tough.

Their eyes went wide and they straightened themselves out. Weird, I have seen them do it to Bryce but when it happens to me, it feels so strange. Still, I have seen Jane throw her name around and she always gets results, so I tried it and sure enough they were letting me inside. I bounded over to the place this guy told me the office would be and I knocked hard.

“Who the fuck is knocking on my door like that!” I heard Callan's venomous voice. The door swung open and I saw a moment of pause from him when his angry face took in the last person he expected to see.

“What are you doing here?” He gritted his teeth, I bumped right past him.

“Brianna?” My brother sat up from the sectional he seemed to be leaning on.

“What are you doing here?” He asked but I cut him off.

“Why the fuck am I being followed, huh!” I looked between both men, both in suits, standing in front of me and now looking down at my much smaller frame.

I couldn't tell what was behind Callan's eyes but it was cold and empty of anything I ever used to see. It hurts to look too long but my anger fueled me. My brother's eyes snapped back to the man behind me.

“Sir, I can explain.” he muttered.

“How the fúck did you let yourself be seen? She is a little girl with no experience, how did you fuck it up that badly!” My brother scolded the man, I stepped in the way and interrupted again.

“I just sprayed this man in the eyes with perfume and beat him up with a gallon of milk, Bryce because I thought he was a pervert or something. Why do you have someone following me?” I asked again. Bryce's eyes linger on the man for a second with silent promises.

“If you hurt him, I will hurt you, I swear. The poor guy was just following your damn orders.” I shoved at him to get his eyes on me.

“Brianna,” he sighed.

“Don't call me, answer me, Bryce.” I crossed my arms and popped my hips out. Callan's eyes couldn't help himself, his eyes traced the curve of my body before he quickly shifted them away and walked away from us behind his desk.

“You are dismissed, get out of my face before I beat you with a gallon of milk too.” My brother snapped at the man still behind us. He scurried off.

“Brianna, come and sit. We need to talk.” He told me, I was so mad but I could see I just walked into something more than I thought I would.

When I sat down on the sofa, my back was to callan. He didn't say a word.

“Listen, I didn't want you freaking out about nothing, so I didn't tell you but I only have those guys following you for protection purposes. That is it.” He said.

“Protection from what?” I arched a brow at him, he hesitated to answer that one.

“Bryce, protection from what?” I asked again but more tentatively now that my nerves were settling in.

“Things have been a bit touchy at work, that is all.” He said and I scoffed.

“What the hell does that mean? You are in the damn mafia, Bryce. What does touchy mean?”

I was frustrated now, I couldn't help but glance behind me at Callan too and he wouldn't look at me. Damn him.

“Calm down, this is why I don't like telling you shit, you get worked up, Brianna.” He tried to justified this

“The two of you have been so damn vague since the second I moved to this city. First, it was to hide your shady business and now what is it? What are you hiding from me? Am I in danger?’ I had to ask because it was starting to feel that way.

“No, you aren't. It was just for protection, so I can have a little peace of mind. Your life is becoming very public too, Brianna and I don't want you wandering this city with no protection.” I frowned at his words.

I thought about his words, it is not like I am famous or anything, then I thought about tonight. After tonight's announcement at the show, will I become famous? I don't know how to feel about that and I want to be a relevant fashion designer but do designers need bodyguards for protection? I feel like they don't, so this is weird for me.

“I can see you are overthinking already.” He called me out.

He was seated beside me with his knees turned away and I was fidgeting with my hands on my lap. Who knows what Callan was doing, my presence doesn't seem to matter to him.

“Bryce, you would tell me if I was in danger, wouldn't you? And what about you? Are you being safe?” My voice got smaller and he sighed.

“I am safe, and you are safe. Just let me keep a few guys on you, alright. Just for my sake, will you?” He asked, my anger had calmed down so now all I felt was hesitation. There is more to this but they won't tell me.

“This is really weird.” I muttered.

“You won't even know they are there, that guy was an idiot. He wasn't my choice for your security, we were just short handed last night.” He replied.

“So I have been followed around for a lot longer? That was so creepy, Bryce?” I scoffed.

“Did you really beat him with a milk carton?” His dumb smirk surfaces. I couldn't help it, I kind of laughed a little but bit my cheek so I wouldn't give into his distraction.

“I did,” I said proudly. He threw his head back and laughed.

“His eyes were so red.” He pointed out, I pulled the sampler perfume.

“I can make a weapon out of anything, you might be Mr. Military Mafia but I know a few things.” I waved the perfume at his face.

“Umm, it smells nice.” He took a whiff.

“You are lucky I didn't spray your eyes. Whatever, I guess, I will have your weird people around if it will make you feel a little better, Bryce. But, you really have to tell me the truth if you are in danger right now. Please be honest.” I looked at him, he shifted his eyes to Callan.

“I am not in danger, go on, you don't want to be late for your special thing tonight. I will see you when you get back home.” He gave me a pressed smile.

Why don't I believe him? When he stood up, so did I and he ushered me to the door but I slid my eyes in the direction of his best friend. I couldn't help myself, his eyes met mine and I felt this sharp uncomfortable pain zing through me. I paused at the door and without looking at the two of them and spoke.

“Please, be careful, Bryce. I don't want anything bad to happen to you…to both of you.” I corrected myself just before I walked away.

Callan might have broken my heart but I want him safe. I want both of them to be safe and something in my gut is telling me that they are not.
