Chapter 174: I Can't Speak Without A Lawyer

Callan

My gut flipped at the sight beside me, dark hair over the pillow and my hand automatically reached out but snapped back when I realized it was not that brunette hair. Not this shoulders, fuck, I sat up and grabbed the water and pills that was on Hannah's nightstand beside me. I went back to sleep after that.

The next time I woke up, I smelt something. Food, breakfast but I was still half inside a dream.

'The bakery is just downstairs, it only takes a few minutes.’ she giggled. Is it her cooking breakfast? The corner of my lips tipped up.

'Come lay back down.’ I reached for her, breakfast can wait.

'Can you just wait?’ she asked me, my brows furrowed.

'Wait for what?’

'It is two months.’

No, no, I can't do it. Not another two months, I swear I can't.

‘Let’s just eat breakfast, I will stay here for a while.’ I tried grabbing her, shit Brianna isn't here anymore.

My eyes snapped open and I saw a figure standing over me. If I had my gun, I would have shot it.

“Fucking hell, Hannah. Why are you standing over me like that.” I snapped at her.

“You mumbled something to me, I thought you called me.” She snapped back.

“Even though you don't deserve it, I made you breakfast. So stop being a dicksucker and come eat.” She stomped off. I sighed and managed to get up but I was so hungover. I felt like dog shit, worse than that.

“Why? What did I do?”  I asked when I came into her kitchen. I have known Hannah for a long damn time.

“You kept calling me Brianna.” She hissed, I flinched at her words. Fuck, why was I talking about her? I can't remember anything from last night.

“I don't know why I would do that.” I cleared my throat.

“Are you sure about that? I have a pretty good idea.” She got snarky with me.

“Oh, shut up.” I denied whatever it was that she was thinking, I didn't want to hear it.

“Callan, what is going on with you and Bryce's little sister? I can't imagine he would be okay with it.” She started aggravating me right when she started asking questions. I took her toast but I can't stomach anything else at the moment.

“Nothing,” I said and it was true. Nothing is going on with us, must have had a dream and was confused. It is normal to dream about people, I dream about all kinds of people.

“Gosh, I never knew you to be a bad liar.” She looked at me with her eyes, I rolled mine.

“You were belligerent last night, if nothing else, you and I have been friends for a long time, so why don't you tell me why you were that drunk, calling me another girl's name all night?” She pressed me, I grit my teeth.

“Drop it,” I warned her, my voice was so gravelly and my throat kind of hurt.

Shit, I puked last night. What a little bitch I was.

“Do you remember what you said about her? You said you…” she was about to speak but stopped when I slammed my fist on her table. She flinched at the rattle of her plates.

“Drop it, Hannah and I mean it.” I glared at her.

I don't want to know, whatever my drunk fucked up mind said about that girl, I don't want to know about it.

Brianna POV.

I was surprised when I got a phone call from Dontalla, she really doesn't like technology much. She doesn't frequently use it.

“Sweetheart, I must leave for Italy for a short trip. When I returned, we had work.” She told me.

We had been busy a few weeks ago but then she went quiet as she sometimes does. Now she is leaving the country, she travels a lot so it does surprise me.

“Anything I should prepare?” I asked her, since she rarely ever tells me what work entails. I heard her light chuckle.

“Prada, sweetheart.” That was her only explanation.

I love Prada as I love all designer brands, so whatever it is, I don't even care. I am just glad to be involved. After a few minutes of conversation, she and I hung up. Prada, huh? I am so excited. I was thinking about googling if any Prada events were happening here in Port Harcourt city but at the same time, there was a knock at my front door. Is it Jane? Maybe my brother forgot his key. Those were honestly the two people I could imagine at the door. Maybe David, it was none of those people. In fact, I was so shocked at who I was seeing that I didn't greet him. I just looked up at the man and an unsettling feeling came over me.

“Hello, Miss. Fletcher.” Detective Nasa nodded to me, even in casual wear you will just know he is an officer.

“Oh, detective. I wasn't expecting you.” That was the only thing I could think to say.

I didn't want to let him in, I didn't want this here. I just lingered in the doorway with the door still only half cracked open. His eyes darted past me to see what he could of my residence before quickly returning back to me.

“My apologies for the short notice, but I wondered if you were in a more talkative mood this time around. I really didn't get to say much with that lawyer of yours shutting me down at every turn. I don't see why he would need to, those are some pretty innocent questions, Miss. Fletcher.” He seemed to be trying to get my guard down.

How dare he approach me without my lawyer present? Hoping to trip me? That doesn't sound professional, that sounds coercive.

“I have been advised not to speak without a lawyer present.” I told him, I didn't buckle at his surprise visit here.

“For guilty people, sure.” He practically shrugged.

Does this man view me as an idiot little girl? I feel like he does. I feel like he thinks he can trick me into talking because I don't want to seem guilty and this angered me.

“I don't believe that is true, it is so you don't turn my words against me in a misleading way to how I meant them. I believe that is why it is advised to have a lawyer.” I tipped my chin up to exude confidence, even though I was so uncomfortable right now. I didn't want a guy like him to sense fear or apprehension though. He looks like the arrogant type that thrives off that kind of stuff. He pushed his bottom lips out and nodded at my words.

“I see,” he muttered. We were at a stand still here in the doorway.

“So, I assume I am not invited in?” He chuckled at the tight grip on my half closed door.

I was about to speak when I heard the ding of the elevator at the end of the hall. I was both relieved that Bryce would be here and also nervous that he would become known to someone like detective Nasa. I don't want him looking too far into my brother's life and finding the skeleton I know he has in his closet. My heart thrummed when I realized it wasn't my brother walking off the elevator but his best friend instead. What the hell is Callan doing here? Honesty, I was relieved, simply because I didn't want to be alone with this detective anymore, he was freaking me out.

Callan was to no surprise wearing a suit with a dark button down shirt and he looked impressive in his aura and demeanor. He was a presence that is hard to ignore. I noticed his eyes were fixed on the detective as if he already knew the man was here. How would he, though? Of course, this larger figure walking right towards us caught the attention of the officer, he turned his eyes to the man but not his body.

“Can I help you?” Callan's deep voice filled the otherwise quiet hall. Now the detective turned his body.

“Can I help you?” He returned the question to him. Callan had his no nonsense expression on, he hadn't even glanced my way. He was fixated on the detective at my door.

“I live in this building, you don't.” He said outright.

That was when the detective showed off his badge. I know that is how he got in here because otherwise he would have been able to get past the entrance of this secure building.

“I was speaking with Miss. Fletcher, I am sorry, who are you again?” He clearly wanted a name.

“Miss. Fletcher doesn't speak without a lawyer present and unless you have a warrant, you shouldn't be at the woman's door. Now if you excuse us, come on Brianna.” He stepped between me and the detective, having me step back into the apartment.
