Off Limits, Brother's Best Friend Chapter 59
Chapter 59: Are You Doing A Shady Business?
Brianna
How can Callan be mad at me for trying to do the right thing? I want him so badly but if it means he is seriously going to have to lose my brother and mess up his business arrangements, then I know it is not a joke anymore to tempt him into wanting me back. I need to stay away from Callan Harold. He makes me weak.
My brother kept his words and carved some time in his day to take me around our neighborhood. Rumuola has a lot to offer and there is this place called Thought Pyramid that is an art center. There is also a walk through garden that is elevated on an old railway trail. It was nice to find greenery in the concrete city. Bryce and I just walked through it and took a few silly pictures together. A lot of these areas are photogenic locations.
I spent a chill afternoon with my brother going around to look at it all l. We grabbed lunch and then he brought me to an area with high end stores. He is going to kill me with his newfound generosity. He told me I could buy something and he brought me through half a dozen stores while I decided. And in the end, he regretted it. I have never heard a grown man whine so much. When he took me to an observation deck, at sunset, it was absolutely breathtaking with both the city skylines and the ocean in view.
“It is weird to think of this, but I was going to ask if you want to grab drinks and dinner. You are legal to drink, so weird.” He almost cringed at me and made me laugh.
“Again, I said, you are stuck in the mindset that I was still a teenager.” I shook my head at him.
We went to grab food in the area and it was very expensive around here. I told him we could go eleew but this is his lifestyle now I guess. It brought me around a conversation I wanted to have with him.
“Bryce, I figured out what you and Callan are hiding from me.” I said quietly from across the table we shared at some high end restaurant.
I felt the tables were far enough apart that no one would be listening in on our conversation. He paused eating to look up at me.
“What do you mean?” He decided to play dumb the same way Callan did.
“I know Harold Group of Company is a lucrative business and so on but I have done the mathematics and truthfully, it doesn't add up. I saw how much our apartment costs and how easily you give me money for designer clothes and I have seen your car and how you carry yourself. You are involved in shady business, aren't you?” Maybe not everything you do is one hundred percent legal.” I raised an eyebrow at him and watched his face harden.
Of course, this is a military trained man, he can withstand waterboarding from terrorists and never mind his baby sister's inquisition. He gave nothing away.
“What the hell made you think that?” He pouted at me.
“Bryce,” I rolled my eyes.
“Brianna?” He mocked my voice, I put my spoon down and leaned a little closer.
“I am not judging you, okay?” We have both had to do things to get by.” His eyes darted around my face to read me.
“I do business, that is all you need to know.” His tone was final.
“Shady business.” I reiterated, his jaw sharpened when he clenched like that. He is mad.
“Enough, Brianna.” He warned me, but we were interrupted by the waiter.
“Can I get you two anything else?” He asked cheerfully.
At least not every one in Port Harcourt had a scowl. People aren't always the friendliest here, although I noticed when I was with Callan, please would change their attitude in his presence. It is part of what made me suspicious of him.
“Just the check.” He leaned back in his chair.
“You have a black card?” I pointed out his obvious wealth.
I don't know how much he has or how much he gets paid and I know he won't tell me but, I used common sense to know it didn't add up entirely.
“You and Callan have guns, actually so does David because Ezekiel took his away.” I said as we walked out. He pinched the bridge of his nose.
“It is for protection.” He said the same thing Callan had told me.
“Protection from what?” I pressed.
“Listen, Port Harcourt can be a crazy place, we were wealthy and well known. You never know.” He shrugged.
“Do you have it on you right now?” I asked, peeking around his jacket.
He wasn't wearing a suit for once, but he did wear an unnecessary jean jacket over his t-shirt when it wasn't even that cold out.
“Yes,” he admitted and I gasped.
Seriously?” He didn't respond to that.
“What danger could we possibly face today?” I asked.
“Kiddo, you were fucking kidnapped by your ex-boyfriend a few weeks ago, you really want to start with me on my logic of protection?” He got me there.
“Is it like a military thing? You are so used to having weapons. Does it make you feel secure?” I asked, he paused.
“Yes,” he muttered.
I don't know if I believe that was the whole thing, I still think he is involved in some shady business but I don't want to piss him off and ruin our siblings day. When I dropped it, he became less tense and our goofy demeanor returned to us. We laughed about dumb shit from when we were children, or some of the funny stories he has from basic training and stuff. Just random filler information we haven't had from each other while living half a world away. It was a good time.
Whatever he does, he has really come into his own as a person. He is confident, seems business savvy and most importantly he seems happy. Whatever he does to get him to this , I am okay with it.
