ARIA

I'm just walking into my office when a sudden wave of panic hits me—not from Jace through our matebond, but from Aurora. I freeze mid-step, knowing she's with the very pregnant Eliana, though it's still weeks before the twins are due.

Eliana? I mindlink her immediately, my heart racing.

Aria? Her voice sounds strained, tight with worry.

"What's wrong? Is Aurora okay?"

My water broke, she whispers back. The babies are coming early.

My stomach drops. "Where are you?"

At home. Lucas is training. Aurora and Atlas are with me, but— She breaks off with a gasp of pain that I can almost feel through our connection.

I'm already grabbing my keys. "I'm calling everyone now. Stay calm. I'm on my way."

I disconnected and mindlinked with Jace first. We needed to move fast. Eliana was in labor. Her water had broken. Jace's thoughts came through our connection clearly - he would get Lucas and Dr. Maya while I took responsibility for the children. The urgency of the situation left no time for discussion. We each understood our roles and moved to action immediately.

Ten minutes later, I burst into Lucas and Eliana's cabin. Atlas was crying in his playpen. Aurora stood beside Eliana, tears streaming down her face.

"It's okay, sweetie," I told Aurora, kneeling next to her. "Your aunt will be fine."

Eliana sat against the wall, face pale. "Contractions are getting closer."

I helped Aurora set up her drawing pad. "Make a picture for the new babies."

That distracted her. I turned to Eliana and squeezed her hand.

"Lucas and Maya are coming. Just breathe."

The door banged open. Lucas rushed in, face twisted with worry.

"El!" He dropped beside her.

Dr. Maya followed, medical bag in hand. She examined Eliana quickly.

"We need to get to the healing center now."

Lucas lifted Eliana. "The kids?"

"I've got them," I said, picking up Atlas. "Go."

-

Jace was waiting when we arrived home. He took Atlas from my arms while Aurora ran to show him her drawings.

"Any updates?" he asked quietly.

"Maya's taking her to the healing center. It's happening fast." I checked my phone again. "I should be there. Lucas will need support."

Jace nodded. "Go. We'll hold down the fort here."

I kissed him quickly. "I'll call when I know something."

The healing center was unnervingly quiet when I arrived. At the reception desk, I asked for Eliana.

"Room 204, but—"

Before she could finish, the double doors swung open. Medical staff rushed past, pushing a gurney with Eliana on it. Lucas tried to follow, but Maya blocked him.

"You need to wait out here."

"She's my mate!" His voice cracked with desperation.

Dr. Jonathan appeared, already in surgical scrubs. "The twins are in distress. We need to perform an emergency cesarean."

"I need to be with her," Lucas insisted.

"I'm sorry," Jonathan said firmly. "We need every inch of space in there. This is a complicated procedure."

Maya gripped Lucas's shoulder. "Trust us. We'll take care of her, my friend."

After they disappeared through the doors, Lucas collapsed into a chair. I sat beside him, taking his trembling hand.

"What happened?" I asked softly.

"One of the babies is in the wrong position." His voice was flat. "It's blocking the other one from oxygen. They have to cut her open."

"Maya's the best," I reminded him. "And Jonathan's delivered more werewolf pups than anyone in the territory."

Lucas stared at the floor. "What if I lose her? I can't raise two pups without her."

"You won't have to." I squeezed his hand. "Eliana is strong."

We sat in silence. Seconds stretched into minutes. I focused my hearing—years of training with Gabriel had taught me to sharpen my senses beyond normal human limits. Lucas did the same, his head tilted slightly.

Then we heard it. A tiny, angry cry. Lucas's grip tightened painfully.

"That's one," he whispered.

Fifteen agonizing minutes later, another cry joined the first. The tension in Lucas's shoulders eased slightly.

"They're both here."

The clock on the wall showed thirty minutes had passed when Maya finally emerged, looking exhausted but relieved.

"Lucas." She approached us. "Everyone is stable."

"Everyone?" His voice was barely audible.

Maya smiled. "You have a healthy boy and girl. Beautiful twins."

"And Eliana?"

Her smile faltered slightly. "She'll recover fully, but... there were complications. Werewolf bodies aren't designed for twin births. The strain was too much on her system."

Lucas tensed. "What are you saying?"

"To save her life, we had to remove her uterus. I'm sorry, Lucas, but Eliana won't be able to have more children."

The words hung heavy between us. Lucas stared at Maya, processing.

"But she's alive?" His voice cracked. "And the babies are healthy?"

"Yes. All three are fighters."

Lucas stood. "Can I see them?"

"They're being moved to recovery. Follow me."

As Lucas followed Maya, I touched his arm. "Do you want me to come?"

He shook his head. "Thank you, Aria. For everything."

"Jace and I will visit tomorrow. Let them rest tonight."

The drive home felt longer than usual. My mind raced with thoughts of Eliana. She'd always talked about having a big family—four or five children. Now that dream had been cut short.

Yet she was alive. She had two beautiful babies. A family.

Sometimes the path we expect to walk changes suddenly. The destination remains the same—happiness, love, family—but the journey looks different than we imagined.

As I pulled into our driveway, I spotted Jace through the window, Aurora on his shoulders. My family. Not what I'd expected when I first came to Moon Shadow Pack, but perfect in its own way.

Inside, Aurora bombarded me with questions.

"Are the babies here? Are they boys or girls? Can I see them?"

I scooped her up. "Yes, they're here. A boy and a girl. We'll visit them tomorrow."

"Two babies!" She clapped her hands. "Like a matched set!"

After Aurora was finally asleep, I found Jace waiting in our bedroom.

"Everyone okay?" he asked.

I sank onto the bed beside him. "The babies are healthy. Eliana's stable."

"But?"

"There were complications." I swallowed hard. "They had to remove her uterus. She can't have more children."

Jace was silent for a moment. "That's a hard price to pay."

"She's alive. That's what matters."

He pulled me against his chest. "Lucas must be relieved."

"He is. But I keep thinking about Eliana when she wakes up. When she learns the truth."

"She'll grieve. Then she'll look at her twins and know it was worth it."
