The Human Girl Who Tamed Alpha King Chapter 211
AURORA
I was flipping pancakes in our kitchen when my phone vibrated. The sizzle of butter on the griddle and the sweet smell of maple syrup filled the air as I wiped my hands on a dishcloth before checking the message. Lawrence would be back soon, and I wanted everything perfect.
This was our thing - having breakfast together every morning unless something urgent came up. Our little ritual in a world that often felt chaotic.
A text from an unknown American number appeared on the screen:
[You and your mate will get what you deserve.]
Seriously? Another threat? Since bonding with Lawrence, trouble seemed to follow us everywhere, but sending threats to my personal number? How did they even get it? The pancake I was cooking started to smoke, and I quickly flipped it, revealing a too-dark underside.
"Damn it," I muttered, scraping it into the trash. Just like my mood - ruined by some coward hiding behind a text message.
I put the phone down, deciding to wait for Lawrence. I'd spent enough of my life handling scary stuff alone. The sound of the front door opening pulled me from my thoughts - Lawrence was back from his morning run, but he wasn't alone.
"Aurora?" Lawrence called, his deep voice instantly calming my nerves.
"In the kitchen!"
Lawrence strode in with my father right behind him. My warrior immediately came to me, wrapping his arms around my waist and kissing me deeply. Even marked as his, he still kissed me every day like it was our first time.
"Hey, princess." Dad hugged me next, his embrace solid and secure. The King of our pack rarely made house calls unless something important was happening. His Alpha presence filled our modest kitchen, making it seem smaller somehow.
"Morning, Dad. What brings you here?" I asked, trying to sound casual while pouring fresh batter onto the griddle.
"Sorry to interrupt your breakfast," he said, "but I need to talk to Lawrence about something that concerns you too."
I nodded, grabbing another plate. "No problem, Father. Let me get you a plate."
The three of us sat down to breakfast. I watched Dad studying Lawrence with that evaluating Alpha gaze that always made my insides tighten. Lawrence, to his credit, didn't fidget under my father's scrutiny.
"You know," Dad began, cutting into his pancakes, "since James died, I've lost my official Beta. James's brother Marco doesn't want the position, and neither James nor Marco had children."
I nodded, feeling that familiar ache. James's death had hit our pack hard, especially Dad. Another name on the growing list of those we'd lost.
"I've asked Marcus Ravenwood to serve as my official Beta, and he's accepted, but Marcus is getting older. His son is already Alpha of another pack." Dad paused, looking straight at Lawrence. "Atlas has been thinking about this for the past week, and today he came to tell me that there's only one person he can think of for the position. It's you, Lawrence."
Lawrence's fork clattered against his plate. "Me? I wasn't even born in this pack. Do you think the pack would accept that?" His voice held an uncertainty.
I grabbed his hand under the table, squeezing gently. This fierce fighter who could take down any challenger in training now looked like a boy needing reassurance.
"The pack has already started to accept you, Lawrence," Dad said calmly. "The warriors you've trained saved many lives during the attack. Your methods are effective. Honestly, Atlas would benefit from having someone like you by his side."
Pride swelled in my chest. From outsider to being chosen as the future King's Beta – what an honor. Lawrence had earned this with his blood and sweat, proving himself worthy despite his scars and past.
Just then, Dad's gaze fell on my phone, screen still lit with the threatening message. Shit, I forgot to flip it over.
"What's this?" He picked up the phone.
"Oh, right. Sorry I forgot about it because you came in. I was going to show Lawrence."
Dad read the message, his jaw tightening – a sure sign of his anger. No one threatened his daughter without consequences. His eyes flashed momentarily.
"You and your mate will get what you deserve," he read aloud.
"What's going on?" Lawrence asked immediately, as Dad handed him the phone. I watched Lawrence's eyes darken.
"It's an American number. So I don't know who it could be," I explained, trying to keep my voice steady.
Dad saved the number. "I'll have someone check and try to track this number."
"Okay, Father. Thank you."
"Think about our proposal, Lawrence," Dad said, changing the subject.
Lawrence looked him straight in the eye – few dared to do that with the Alpha King. "I don't need to think about it. If you and Atlas are sure, it would be a great honor. But I'm not entirely clear on what being a Beta entails."
"That's why you'll be working closely with Marcus. He'll teach you the basics. The rest will be up to you."
"Okay, thank you," Lawrence nodded, his voice carrying rare deference.
Dad prepared to leave, giving me one last hug. "Don't worry, princess," he whispered in my ear. "No one will hurt you."
As soon as the door closed, Lawrence pulled me into his arms, holding me tightly against his chest. "I don't like this. Being threatened again."
"I know, I don't either," I mumbled against his shirt, listening to his steady heartbeat. His warmth enveloped me, making me feel simultaneously safe and terrified - safe in his embrace, but terrified of what might happen to him because of me.
"I'll keep you safe. I won't let anyone hurt you or our son." His voice dropped low, his warrior's vow. His hand drifted to my still-flat stomach, where our baby boy grew.
"I know."
Lawrence took a deep breath, pulling back to reveal an incredulous smile. "I can't believe Atlas wants me as his Beta. It's such an honor."
"Since you came here, you've done so much. Everyone sees it. Atlas trusts you, and so does my father. He's right, Atlas will be better with you by his side."
"Thank you. I'll serve him the best way I can. I'll do everything possible to help him."
We sat quietly for a moment, but that text message kept swirling in my mind. Who hated us enough to threaten us? Why now?
"I hope your father can find out who sent that message," Lawrence finally said, his thumb gently stroking the back of my hand.
"Yeah, me too. I know he'll do everything he can."
"I know he won't stop until he finds out who it is when someone threatens you. Neither will I."
I nodded, but deep inside, I felt something unsettling. A feeling that something big was coming, possibly violent, possibly resulting in losing someone I cared about. The feeling was so strong it almost suffocated me.
But I didn't tell Lawrence – I didn't want to worry him more. He already carried enough weight on his shoulders. This feeling, this darkness... I'd keep it to myself for now.
