The Human Girl Who Tamed Alpha King Chapter 7

ARIA

I was up before dawn, already dressed when light crept through my window. Sleep had been restless—dreams of being chased through endless forests haunting me. Bree's knife sat on my nightstand, a reminder that today wasn't just about leaving—it was about survival.

A soft knock at 5:30. "Aria?" Gabriel whispered. "Let's go."

I grabbed my backpack, took one last look at my room of ten years, and tucked the knife into my boot. The familiar space suddenly felt foreign. I closed the door on that chapter of my life.

Downstairs, Lucas loaded our bags into Gabriel's SUV, his movements tense—more warrior than the brother I knew.

"Ready?" he asked, taking my backpack.

I nodded, unable to speak past the lump in my throat. Leaving our pack, our home—it felt heavy.

Gabriel handed out travel mugs. "Coffee. Long drive ahead."

We slipped out the back door and moved through the shadows of our property, avoiding the main driveway where Warren's men might be watching. Gabriel had parked our escape vehicle—an old SUV borrowed from a trusted friend—in the abandoned hunting cabin half a mile into the woods behind our house.

"Stay close," Gabriel whispered as we navigated through the trees. "The border patrol will be changing shifts soon. That's our window."

Lucas took point, his werewolf senses scanning for any threat as we moved silently through the underbrush. I followed in his footsteps exactly, placing my feet where he did to minimize noise. Gabriel brought up the rear, constantly checking behind us.

The hunting cabin appeared through the mist, a dark silhouette against the lightening sky. The SUV waited, covered in branches and leaves for camouflage.

"Clear," Lucas confirmed after circling the perimeter.

Gabriel quickly uncovered the vehicle while Lucas loaded our bags. I climbed into the backseat, heart pounding as Gabriel started the engine.

"Border patrol changes at six," Gabriel said, checking his watch. "By the time Warren figures it out, we'll be in neutral territory."

We took the old service roads, avoiding the main gates where Warren's men would be stationed. Gabriel navigated the rough terrain with practiced ease, using his werewolf vision in the dim light. I memorized our territory's silhouette as it disappeared behind us.

About a mile from the pack boundary, Lucas tensed.

"Dad. Three o'clock."

Gabriel's grip tightened. "I see it."

I strained to look but couldn't see through the trees like they could. Then I caught it—movement keeping pace with us.

"Warren's men?" My heart pounded.

Gabriel shook his head. "It's Dylan."

Relief and confusion mingled in my chest. "What's he doing here?"

As if in answer, the shadow broke from the trees ahead, resolving into Dylan's human form standing in the middle of the road. Gabriel braked smoothly, bringing us to a stop several yards away.

"Stay in the car," he ordered, then opened his door and stepped out.

Lucas shifted in his seat, positioning himself to move quickly if needed. I watched through the windshield as Gabriel approached Dylan, their breath visible in the cool morning air.

"Warren knows," Dylan said urgently. "Someone tipped him off. He's mobilized the warriors—they're heading to cut you off at the eastern checkpoint."

Gabriel's posture stiffened. "How much time do we have?"

"Minutes, not hours," Dylan replied. "Take the ridge trail. I've cleared the way."

Gabriel nodded. "Thanks."

Dylan looked at me through the glass, regret crossing his face. "I'll buy you some time."

"That's too dangerous," Gabriel protested.

Dylan shook his head. "I'll lead them south—make them think you're heading for River Pack territory. It should give you enough time to reach Moon Shadow."

"Come with us," Gabriel suggested. "When Warren realizes—"

"I'll handle it," Dylan cut him off. "Someone needs to stay and fix things. My father won't be Alpha forever."

There was a weighted silence between them, an unspoken understanding passing between two warriors. Then Gabriel clasped Dylan's forearm in the traditional wolf greeting.

"Moon Shadow's doors will be open to you," Gabriel said. "When the time comes."

Dylan nodded, stepping back toward the tree line. "Go. They'll be coming soon."

We barely made it to the ridge trail when we heard it—howls in the distance, the hunting call of werewolves on the chase.

"They've found our trail," Lucas said grimly.

Gabriel pushed the SUV harder, the vehicle bouncing violently over the rough terrain. "Dylan will divert them."

For twenty tense minutes, we navigated the treacherous ridge trail, a route rarely used even by the most experienced pack members. The howls grew distant, then faded entirely—Dylan had succeeded in leading Warren's warriors away.

"We're almost at the border," Gabriel announced as we crested a hill.

Just as the words left his mouth, a massive black wolf leapt onto the trail ahead of us. Gabriel slammed the brakes, throwing us forward against our seatbelts.

"Warren," Lucas growled, already reaching for the door.

Before either of them could move, two more wolves emerged from the trees—Warren's elite guards.

"Stay in the car," Gabriel ordered, his voice deadly calm. "No matter what happens."

The black wolf shifted, fur receding until Alpha Warren stood before us, naked and unashamed, his face contorted with rage.

"Going somewhere, Gabriel?" he called, his voice carrying easily to our vehicle.

Gabriel stepped out, positioning himself between the SUV and Warren. "This doesn't have to get ugly, Warren."

Warren laughed, the sound chilling. "Stealing what belongs to me? That's already ugly."

"She belongs to no one," Gabriel replied evenly. "Especially not you."

Warren's eyes flashed dangerously. "You forget your place, warrior."

"And you forget yours, Alpha," Gabriel countered. "Our laws protect the young—even humans."

Warren took a step forward. "I offered you everything—position, power, protection. Instead, you choose to run like a coward."

"I choose to protect my family," Gabriel said. "Something you wouldn't understand."

Warren's face darkened. "Take them," he ordered his guards.

The wolves lunged forward just as a chorus of howls erupted from the forest behind us. Five massive wolves burst from the trees, positioning themselves around our SUV in a protective formation.

Warren froze, his eyes widening as he recognized the insignia on their flanks—Moon Shadow Pack.

"You're in neutral territory, Warren," Gabriel said calmly. "And these warriors are here at Alpha Jace Carter's request."

Warren's face contorted with fury. "This isn't over, Gabriel. The girl will be mine."

"She's under Moon Shadow's protection now," Gabriel replied. "Challenge that at your peril."

For a tense moment, Warren seemed ready to attack despite the odds. Then, with a snarl of rage, he shifted back to wolf form and disappeared into the trees, his guards following reluctantly.

One of the Moon Shadow wolves shifted to human form—a tall, muscular man with watchful eyes.

"Gabriel Silverbrook?" he asked.

Gabriel nodded. "Thank you for the timely arrival."

The man inclined his head. "I'm Hunter, Beta to Alpha Jace Carter. We've been expecting you. Follow us—we'll escort you the rest of the way."

As we continued our journey, now with a protective escort of Moon Shadow warriors, I caught Lucas watching the Beta with recognition.

"That's Hunter," he said quietly. "Jace's Beta. One of the most respected warriors in all the territories."

I studied the man leading us to our new home, wondering what awaited us in Moon Shadow Pack—and whether Alpha Jace Carter would truly welcome a human girl into his territory.
