The Human Girl Who Tamed Alpha King Chapter 242
ATLAS
We stood frozen, staring at each other. Minutes passed. Neither of us moved. Her eyes held mine. I couldn't look away. Didn't want to. The connection between us pulsed, warm and insistent. Luke was unusually quiet in my mind, almost reverent, as if he too was in awe of this moment.
I slowly raised my hand and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. My fingers brushed her cheek, and electricity shot through me. She shivered. She felt it too. Her skin was soft despite the dirt and scratches from days of running.
"You're my true mate," she whispered nervously, her cheeks flushing.
"Yes. You're my second chance," I said softly.
The realization that the Moon Goddess had given me another chance after I'd rejected Tina hit me hard. My chest tightened with gratitude, but also fear. What if she didn't want this? What if she was overwhelmed? After all, she'd just survived a nightmare.
"Maddie," I said, a hint of panic creeping into my voice, "I know you've been through hell. I won't push you. But please, don't walk away. Not now." My heart hammered against my ribs. *Don't leave me*, I wanted to beg, but held back.
"My King, I won't walk away. I'm just... surprised. You're THE king. It's intimidating." She took a deep breath. "But this is the Moon Goddess's choice. I trust her judgment. I just worry I won't be able to handle the responsibility."
*She's afraid of failing me*, I realized. *Not of being with me*. Relief flooded through me.
I cupped her face in my hands, my thumbs gently stroking her cheeks. "Even I worry about the weight of responsibility. But I have my Beta, my family, and now I have you. And you'll have me and my family."
*She's strong. Perfect for us*, Luke rumbled approvingly in my mind.
I couldn't resist any longer. I leaned down and pressed my lips to hers. Her lips were soft, hesitant at first, then yielding. I kept the kiss gentle, though Luke roared for more. *Not now*, I told him. *She needs time*. The taste of her was intoxicating—sweet with a hint of wildness that called to both the man and wolf in me.
When we broke apart, I rested my forehead against hers. We stood like that for a moment, breathing each other in. I memorized everything: her scent, her warmth, the way her eyelashes fluttered against her cheeks.
"We should go," I whispered. "They're waiting."
She nodded. "Yes, they are."
I took her hand, threading our fingers together, and led her out of the cabin. The contact sent waves of comfort through me, settling something restless that had been inside me since I first felt her presence.
Outside, Dad, Alpha Louis, and Maddie's brother Blake waited. Lawrence was nowhere to be seen. Probably securing the area or managing the warriors. The rogue leader had been taken away, his fate sealed the moment he targeted my mate.
"Mom? Julie?" Maddie asked her father, anxiety creeping into her voice.
Alpha Louis looked exhausted but managed a small smile. His clothes were torn and bloodied, his face lined with weariness beyond his years. "King Jace sent warriors to escort Julie to the camp for safety. Your mother went with her, so she could be with Ben. The King assured me they are safe."
I squeezed Maddie's hand reassuringly, feeling her tension ease slightly. The bond between us was already strengthening, allowing me to sense her emotions.
Everyone prepared to shift, but Maddie hesitated. Her father noticed, his eyes filled with paternal concern.
"Your Highnesses," Alpha Louis explained, "Maddie was forced to shift just minutes after she escaped on her eighteenth birthday night. Her wolf is exhausted, and Maddie is a bit afraid due to the excruciating pain of her first forced shift."
*He's not lying*, Luke confirmed in my mind. *Her wolf is weakened from the forcing. I can sense it. She needs protection and rest.*
I shifted into my Primal Wolf form, Luke's massive body towering over everyone. Bones cracked and reshaped, fur erupted across my skin, and my senses sharpened dramatically. I approached Maddie, who looked at me with wide eyes, a mixture of awe and trust in her expression.
"Mate, rest," I said in Luke's deep, rumbling voice. "I will carry you."
Maddie smiled gratefully and nodded. I gently scooped her into my arms, cradling her against my chest. She relaxed against me with a sigh of relief, and something protective and possessive surged through me. *Mine to protect. Mine to cherish.* Her trust in me, despite only just confirming our bond, moved something deep within my soul.
We began running, the others shifting as well. Alpha Louis's wolf was impressive—silver-gray with battle scars that told of his experience and strength. Dad ran point, and Blake took the rear. Warriors flanked us on all sides, their movements synchronized and alert.
Two hours later, we reached the camp. Warriors had set up tents and makeshift medical areas. When the survivors saw Alpha Louis, they emerged from tents, their faces showing both relief and grief. Children clung to mothers, warriors stood at attention despite their injuries, all showing respect to their Alpha.
Uncle Lucas approached us, his expression somber but professional. "My King, Alpha. Your mate and your other daughter are in the tent with your son Ben. Your son is very brave. We tried to save as many as possible. There are about five hundred survivors, mostly women and children, and about sixty pack warriors. I'm sorry to inform you that the rest didn't make it."
Alpha Louis's face crumpled with grief. Even on four legs, his pain was visible, a physical weight bending his proud shoulders.
"Thank you. I know your men and my warriors did their best. So thank you," he managed, his voice thick with emotion. "Now, I want my family checked and cared for. Once I know they're well, I want to walk into my pack lands."
Dad, back in human form, said, "Louis, our warriors are clearing the dead rogues so your people can have proper goodbyes." His voice was respectful, acknowledging the sacred nature of pack grief rituals.
I gently set Maddie down but stayed close, unwilling to break contact. She leaned against me, and I wrapped an arm around her waist. The warmth of her body against mine felt right, like finding a missing piece of myself I hadn't known was gone.
Alpha Louis made a decision that surprised us all. "Put all my pack members in the pack house. When it's done, I'll burn it, letting them leave with the heart of our pack."
"Are you sure?" Dad asked, understanding the significance of such a decision.
"Yes. Our pack is no more. I won't force the survivors to return to a place that brought us such devastation."
No one questioned him further. I looked at Maddie, wondering how she felt about this. Her eyes shimmered with tears, but she stood tall. The strength in her, even after everything she'd endured, made my chest swell with admiration.
