The Human Girl Who Tamed Alpha King Chapter 261
ATLAS
Shouts and screams jolted me from sleep. I leapt up, instantly alert, my heart pounding. The sounds of fighting echoed through the packhouse walls. Lawrence burst through my door, already half-shifted.
"Rogues," he growled, eyes glowing. "At least twenty."
I reached for my wolf immediately. *Luke, we need you.*
My body began to change, bones cracking and reshaping as I let the transformation take me. I connected with Dylan through our mental link.
*Alpha Dylan? What's happening?*
His response came quickly, tinged with rage. *Honored King, rogue attack. We're handling it. Please remain inside.*
*Like hell we will,* I thought, but kept that to myself.
*We're coming to help,* I replied instead.
Lawrence and I raced down the corridor, following the scents of blood and unfamiliar wolves. Outside, chaos reigned. Black Forest wolves fought against ragged rogues who moved with desperate ferocity. I caught the scent of silver – the rogues had weapons that could truly harm us.
*Let me take control,* Luke demanded.
I surrendered completely, letting my original wolf form take over. My body grew larger, muscles rippling as Luke's ancient power surged through us. This wasn't just shifting – this was becoming something more primal, more dangerous.
We charged into the fray, tearing through two rogues who didn't see us coming. Their blood sprayed across my silver-streaked black fur. Lawrence flanked me, his brown wolf form taking down another enemy.
A high-pitched scream cut through the battle sounds. My head whipped toward it – a different sound than the fighting. Through the trees, I spotted movement: a small figure scrambling up a pine tree with a much larger wolf snapping at her heels.
A child.
Luke's protective instinct flared like wildfire. We bounded toward her, covering the distance in seconds. The rogue wolf had his jaws around the child's foot, yanking her from the tree. Her terrified scream pierced the night.
We slammed into the rogue, sending him flying. He recovered quickly, teeth bared as he recognized what I was. Fear flickered in his eyes – he knew an original wolf when he saw one. But desperation made him stupid. He lunged at me, going for my throat.
Luke was faster. We ducked under his attack and came up beneath him, jaws clamping around his belly. One powerful twist and his spine snapped. I spat him out, disgusted by his taste.
The child clung to the tree, trembling. A little girl, no more than seven or eight, with tangled blonde hair and wide, frightened eyes. Blood trickled from her ankle where the rogue had caught her.
I shifted back to human form, not caring about my nakedness. The girl needed to see a person, not a monster.
"It's okay," I said softly, approaching slowly. "I won't hurt you."
She stared at me, terror giving way to confusion. "You... you were the big wolf."
I nodded. "I was. I'm Atlas. What's your name?"
Her lower lip trembled. "Alyssa."
"Are you from this pack, Alyssa?"
She shook her head, glancing fearfully at the dead rogue. "I was with the travelers. They attacked us three days ago. I ran away and hid."
My heart twisted. "Where are your parents?"
Tears filled her eyes. "My parents are dead, sir. They died when I was little. I lived with my aunt, but the bad wolves..." She choked on a sob.
Another rogue burst through the underbrush behind us. I spun, shifting instantly. Luke took the rogue's head off with one savage bite before he could even register what we were. The girl screamed again.
I shifted back, crouching to meet her eyes. "Alyssa, I need to get you somewhere safe. Will you let me help you?"
She hesitated, then nodded. I lifted her gently, her tiny body weighing almost nothing. She smelled of fear and dirt and hunger.
"Atlas!" Lawrence called, running toward us in human form. "Dylan says they're retreating. They've captured one of them – seems to be some kind of leader."
I nodded. "We need to get this child to safety."
Through our mental link, Dylan directed me to a hidden room in his office. *There's a button under my desk. Press it, and a wall panel will open. It's a safe room.*
I carried Alyssa through the packhouse, away from the fighting. Dylan's office was untouched, dark and silent. I found the button easily enough, and a bookcase slid aside to reveal a reinforced door.
"This is a special room where no one can find you," I told Alyssa as I set her down inside. "You'll be safe here."
Her small hand clutched my arm. "Don't leave me alone," she whispered.
"I have to help the others," I explained gently. "But I promise I'll come back for you. No one bad can get in here."
Fear and resignation warred in her young face. Finally, she nodded, releasing me.
"There's water and some food," I said, pointing to a small cabinet. "I won't be long."
I closed the door, ensuring it locked securely. Outside, the sounds of fighting had diminished. Most of the rogues had fled, leaving their dead behind. Dylan and his warriors were rounding up the last few.
"The girl?" Lawrence asked when I rejoined him.
"Safe for now. She says she was with travelers – rogues attacked them days ago."
Lawrence's expression darkened. "They're getting bolder."
I nodded grimly. "And more organized. This wasn't random."
We walked among the dead rogues, counting bodies. Nine in all – more than we'd expected to lose, but less than could have been.
"Did they get what they wanted?" I wondered aloud.
Lawrence shook his head. "I don't think so. This feels like reconnaissance."
An ominous feeling settled in my gut. Something bigger was coming – I could feel it. And somehow, I knew it involved Maddie.
I needed to get back to her, but first, I had a promise to keep to a frightened orphan girl hiding in a safe room. I turned back toward the packhouse, already planning our next move.
