The Human Girl Who Tamed Alpha King Chapter 278
ATLAS
Everything was set. Our defenses were in place, and we had a team lying in wait. Once the rogues moved into position, our hidden forces struck from behind, giving us the upper hand. We were ready to end this war once and for all.
I paced our bedroom floor, stopping every few steps to look at Maddie. She sat cross-legged on our bed, her face set in that stubborn expression I'd grown to both love and dread.
"You're not coming with us tomorrow," I said, trying to keep my voice firm but gentle. "You and Mom need to stay in the safe room."
"I want to fight with you, Atlas." Her green eyes flashed with determination. "I've been training for months. I can help."
I knelt in front of her, taking her hands in mine. "I know you can. That's not why I'm asking this of you."
"Then why?" She pulled her hands away, frustration clear in her voice.
"Because if I don't know you're safe, I can't focus on the enemy." I touched her cheek, feeling her lean into my palm despite her anger. "Magnus is bringing everything he has. This isn't a skirmish—it's war."
Maddie's shoulders slumped slightly. "Knowing you're out there fighting while I'm hiding in a safe room will be torture. I'll worry myself crazy."
"They can't hurt me, dear." I pressed my forehead against hers. "The only way they can truly hurt me is through you."
Her breath caught. "That's not fair."
"It's the truth." I pulled back to look in her eyes. "If something happened to you, I'd lose myself completely. Luke would take over, and I might never come back."
She was quiet for a long moment. "Promise me we'll keep our mind link open. I need to know you're okay."
"Always." I sealed the promise with a kiss. "And I need to know you're safe too."
"Deal." She sighed, finally accepting what we both knew was necessary.
I sat beside her on the bed, pulling her close. "Let's check on Alex. It's been too long since our last contact."
Maddie nodded, closing her eyes. I did the same, reaching out through the pack bonds to find our spy. It took longer than usual—a sign of the distance and danger between us.
*Alex?* I called into the darkness of the mental connection. *Can you hear us?*
A faint response flickered. *My King...*
Maddie gripped my hand tighter as we strengthened the connection together. Her power always amplified mine in ways I still didn't fully understand.
*Alex, report,* I commanded.
His mental voice grew clearer. *My King, we'll reach your territory tonight. Magnus plans a night raid to "surprise" you.*
Fury and satisfaction mixed in my chest. The trap we'd set was working.
*Good. When the battle begins, find my father and Marcus. They'll be waiting behind the rogues.*
*Yes, sir.* Relief colored Alex's thoughts. *Thank you, King Atlas. I miss Ancient Moon Shadow territory so much.*
He'd been away for weeks, risking everything to infiltrate Magnus's forces. The isolation from the pack must have been excruciating.
*Bring Leo if you can,* I added. *My father wants to protect him.*
*I'll try. He's still wary, but he's listened to me about Harrison's lies.*
*Stay safe,* Maddie's voice joined ours, warm and encouraging.
*Maddie,* Alex's tone brightened. *Your presence gives us strength.*
The connection faded, and I opened my eyes to find Maddie watching me.
"It's happening," she whispered. "Tomorrow."
"Yes." I pulled her against my chest, breathing in her scent. "But we're ready."
---
The next afternoon, I stood in my father's office, tension thick in the air. Mom and Maddie sat together on the leather couch while Dad studied the territory maps spread across his desk.
"Tonight," I confirmed. "I felt Alex through the mind link. Magnus plans a night raid."
Dad's eyes narrowed. "Finally."
He closed his eyes, and I felt the powerful surge as he opened a pack-wide mind link. *All warriors to battle stations. Non-combatants to safe rooms. This is not a drill.*
The response was immediate—a rush of acknowledgments from across our territory.
"It's time to end this damn war," Dad growled, rolling up the maps. "Atlas, you know your position."
I nodded. "The eastern ridge. They won't expect me there."
Victor, the Vampire King, stepped from the shadows of the room. He'd been so still I'd almost forgotten his presence.
"My people will join yours at nightfall," he said, his voice carrying centuries of authority. "We'll come from behind while they focus on your front lines."
Dad nodded. "The silver moon armbands?"
"Distributed to all allies," Victor confirmed. "No confusion on the battlefield."
My father looked at me, his eyes softening briefly. "Say your goodbyes. We move out in thirty minutes."
Mom stood, embracing Dad fiercely, while I turned to Maddie. Her eyes shimmered with unshed tears.
"I'll be back," I promised, wrapping my arms around her. "Keep our link open."
"Always." She kissed me with desperate intensity. "Kill that bastard Magnus for me."
I smiled against her lips. "With pleasure."
Dad and Marcus left with their teams. Lawrence stayed with me, while Victor disappeared with his elite vampires. The waiting began.
I escorted Maddie to the safe room myself, checking every security measure twice. Silver-reinforced walls. Armed guards. Medical supplies. Everything perfect.
"I love you," I told her at the door. "More than anything in this world."
She straightened her shoulders, trying to look brave. "Come back to me, Atlas Carter. That's an order from your mate."
"Yes, ma'am." I kissed her one last time, memorizing the feel of her lips against mine.
Then I turned and walked away, not looking back. I couldn't. If I saw her face again, my resolve might break.
Lawrence met me outside. "Ready?"
I nodded, feeling Luke stir within me, eager for battle. "Let's hunt."
We moved through the forest silently, taking our positions on the eastern ridge. Hours passed as darkness fell. The waiting was always the hardest part.
*Atlas?* Dad's voice touched my mind. *They're here. We can see them. Watch for Alex and Leo.*
I tensed, scanning the forest below. *Alex?* I reached out.
*Leo's mate Gabriella is mind-linking with him now,* came the swift reply. *We're ready.*
*Good. You know what to do. Dad's waiting.*
I sensed Magnus before I saw him—a dark presence crossing our territory line. Luke growled within me, hackles raised in anticipation.
The time had come.
I stood, muscles uncoiling as I released a howl that echoed through the valley. The signal for our forces to attack.
Magnus froze, scanning the trees. I stepped into view, shifting into Luke's massive form. My paws hit the ground as I stared directly at my enemy.
*Leave now if you want to live,* I projected the thought, knowing he could hear me.
Magnus laughed. "No one leaves. Today we end this, and every wolf becomes free."
The battle erupted around us. Rogues attacked from all sides as Magnus vanished with unnatural speed.
"He has vampire speed," Victor said, materializing beside me. "I don't understand how."
