I was standing in the shower when a jolt of fear shot through me. My entire body froze. One second later, screams tore through the air, confirming my instincts. Rogues. They were attacking.

I shut off the water and bolted from the bathroom without even drying off. Water dripped from my body as I ran, the cold air hitting my skin. My wolf Luke roared inside me, desperate to protect our pack. As I ran, I felt my bones reshaping and fur sprouting beneath my skin. The familiar pain of transformation lasted only seconds. I chose to leap directly through the window rather than navigate the castle interior—too slow.

"Luke, take over," I told my wolf spirit.

"Yes, my King," he responded, immediately seizing control of our body.

I—no, Luke now—sprinted toward the eastern side of town. The battlefield was chaos. Pack members scattered in all directions, mothers clutching pups as they fled, teenagers and elders running for safety. Damn, how many rogues were there?

Luke spotted a mother wolf being chased by a rogue. He pounced without hesitation. The rogue had no time to turn before Luke was on his back, teeth sinking deep into his neck. One quick snap, and the rogue fell. The rescued mother nodded gratefully before continuing her escape.

I sensed my family joining the fight: Father, Lawrence, Marcus, even my uncle Lucas. Most surprising was Mother Aria on the battlefield. Why was Mom here? She should be somewhere safe!

Suddenly, I sensed her nearby. Luke immediately changed direction. We saw her—surrounded by six rogues. I knew Mom was one of the greatest warriors ever, but this number was too many, even for her.

Luke released a thunderous roar, drawing the rogues' attention. One backed away, but another stupidly charged us. Luke grabbed its throat and twisted efficiently. He held up the corpse, staring down the remaining rogues. Blood dripped from our muzzle, the metallic taste filling my mouth.

"I am the True King of the werewolf world," Luke said through our shared voice, deeper and more threatening. "Don't be stupid. Leave and live. Stay and end up like your friend."

Two rogues attacked simultaneously. Luke dropped the dead wolf, stopped their movements with his energy field, then tore open their throats with his claws. The remaining two rogues turned and ran.

Mother bowed to Luke, her silver-streaked fur catching the moonlight. "Thank you, my King," she said through mind link.

I realized my energy field was too powerful even for Mother, and immediately reduced its intensity. "No need, Mom," I answered. She smiled at me, her eyes filled with pride. That look always warmed my heart, even in battle.

"I love you, son," she said before shifting into her primal wolf form and rejoining the fight.

After another hour of fierce combat, the rogues finally retreated. Luke calmed down, returning control to me. I started walking back toward the center of town, seeing numerous dead wolves on the ground, mostly rogues but some from our pack too. I growled at myself. Dammit, I should have done better. I should have saved everyone.

I'd personally killed over fifty rogues, but at what cost? How many of our people died? That number stabbed my heart like a blade.

Reaching the town center, I saw my family safely gathered: Father Jace, Mother Aria, Lawrence all back in human form. I couldn't shift back—considering I'd been showering when the attack started, I wasn't about to stand naked in front of everyone.

Father and the others, including the warriors, looked proud of me. "Well done, my son," Father said. "During the battle, everyone could feel your presence, not just you, but your wolf as well." The warriors cheered.

"Thank you for saving your mother," Father added through mind link. I nodded in response.

"How large was this attack?" I asked. "Too many died."

"At least a thousand," Father answered, his face grim as he surveyed the damage around us. "I've sent people to count the dead. This was a pure attack. The rogues knew they could have asked and we would have allowed them in for food." Marcus nodded in agreement, his expression hardened from battle.

"Are Aurora, Anthony, the twins, Seraphina, Eliana and the children safe?" I asked urgently, feeling a rush of concern for my family.

"All safe," Father confirmed, patting my shoulder. "They're at the meeting point." His touch calmed me considerably.

"Seraphina was at our place," Lawrence added, his face showing relief. "She was with Aurora."

"Good," I said, grinning. "I would've shifted back, but I was in the shower when the attack started." Everyone laughed, the sound precious after the battle we'd just fought.

After confirming the situation was stable, I returned to the castle. Back home, I shifted to human form, my body covered in blood. I showered again and got dressed, then went out to help however I could—carrying the dead, escorting the wounded to the healing center.

Leaving the healing center, I spotted Gina supporting an elderly injured werewolf. Her clothes were torn and spattered with blood, but she seemed unharmed. "Let me help," I said, stepping forward to take some of the old man's weight.

"Thank you," Gina said. "His leg won't work. I think it might be broken."

"No problem, I'll get him inside," I replied. "Gina, sit down and rest." I carried the elderly wolf into the healing center.

When I came out, Gina was still waiting, walking toward me as if to embrace me. I stopped her. We were in public, and I'd always made sure nobody except my family knew Gina had been visiting me.

"Careful, remember our rules," I reminded her through mind link. Gina stopped.

"Sorry, my King, I'm just happy to see you unharmed," she responded.

"I understand, I'm not angry. We just need to remember these rules," I said. Gina nodded.

"Can I visit you tonight?" she asked, her eyes full of need and the adrenaline aftermath of battle.

"Not tonight, I'll be busy helping here," I refused. Gina nodded again in acceptance.

We each went to help others. Watching her leave, I considered my relationship with Gina. I needed to talk with her soon. She needed to know I couldn't continue our relationship. Out of respect for her, and for Maddie, we had to stop. Then I could face my true mate with a clear conscience, knowing I hadn't been with anyone else since realizing who she was.

Watching the injured pack members being carried into the healing center, determination filled me. As the True King, they were all my responsibility. I clenched my fist, making a silent vow: next time, I wouldn't let enemies get this close.
