"Absolutely not. Not unless he goes through my dead body first."

"He has a list," Victor said quietly. "I didn't see all the names."

Maddie shifted uncomfortably beside me. "I don't mean to be rude, but how does he breed vampires? Technically aren't you...?"

"Dead?" Victor finished for her. "Not all vampires are turned. Some are born this way."

Maddie apologized, but Victor waved it away.

He mentioned that he knew Atlas and Lawrence had been seeking information about gifted wolves. From a box he'd brought, he produced more books and scrolls about vampire abilities and other races.

"I haven't collected or read these," Victor explained. "But I sensed you might have plans to keep them safe."

He handed a book to my father, who thanked him for the trust and confirmed they had a secure location. They shook hands, solidifying their alliance.

My father led us to the basement of one of the houses, where he pressed his thumb against a hidden scanner. A door slid open, revealing a tunnel that led to a large room I'd never seen before.

"This is new," my father explained. "The blueprints have been burned, and the wolves who built it had their memories removed by Greta with their consent. Each main house has a pathway here."

"Well hidden," Victor commented. "Well done, Your Majesty."

We placed the vampire's boxes on a table. I noticed one box specifically held documents about werewolf abilities.

When we returned upstairs, Victor walked out into the dawn light. I was surprised to see it didn't harm him.

"I was born this way, so sunlight doesn't hurt me," he explained. "It's uncomfortable, but not deadly. My companion, however, was turned. Sunlight would kill him."

My father offered to let Victor's follower stay in the basement until sunset, inviting Victor and his other companion to stay in this house. Victor bowed in thanks.

As Maddie and I prepared to leave, Victor called me back. He handed me an old journal.

"This was written by one of your true kings before you. The old vampire king must have taken it after killing him. I thought you should have it personally. Perhaps it will help you with the great responsibility."

I took the book carefully. "Thank you. I appreciate this more than you know." I bowed to him.

Back at our home, Maddie and I showered together before climbing into bed. As I held her against me, feeling her steady breathing as she fell asleep, I thought about Victor's warning and the journal in my hand. Whatever was coming, we would face it together.

"Do you really trust them?" Bradley asked me, standing in the shadows of the basement. Kenny huddled in the corner, avoiding the sunlight that filtered through the small window.

I paused, considering the question seriously. Trust werewolves? For centuries, that would have been laughable. But things were different now.

"When I first made these plans, I wasn't sure if I could trust them. But after meeting them, yes, I do trust them," I answered, meeting Bradley's eyes firmly.

Bradley nodded slightly. "They do seem worthy of respect and trust."

I stood at the window, watching the trees. "The King showed us the chamber and told us how to open it, though we can't do it ourselves. Neither of us wants that Rogue making hybrids." That showed they meant business, despite centuries of hatred.

"Look, you don't have to like them or trust them like I do. But you will follow orders and show respect while we work together," I said firmly.

Bradley bowed his head immediately. "Yes, sir. I promise."

A knock interrupted our conversation. I gestured for Bradley to sit down and walked to the door.

A woman stood outside, her aura instantly telling me who she was—the werewolf Queen. Her spine was straight, her gaze steady and calm, with a young warrior beside her holding a tray.

"Hello, Your Majesty," I greeted her respectfully.

"Hello. My mate told me you would be staying until dusk because one of your companions cannot tolerate sunlight. Days can be long here, so I brought you some food and a bag of blood for each of you," she said, her voice calm but commanding.

I accepted the tray, surprised by this unexpected kindness. "This is very generous and unexpected. We thank you."

The Queen looked directly into my eyes. "I assure you no one has touched the food."

I smiled, understanding her implication. "Thank you. I wasn't thinking that at all. I'm just glad your mate is willing to work with us."

She handed me a piece of paper with a phone number. "If you need anything, call this number."

I nodded in thanks, and the Queen turned to leave, her movements graceful yet powerful.

After closing the door, I placed the tray on the table. The blood bags were a godsend for us. Watching Bradley's expression soften, I knew he also saw hope—perhaps we could find help for his daughter.

Maddie's head rested on my chest, her breathing soft and even. Damn, I wanted to hold her forever and forget all the troubles outside. But reality wouldn't allow that luxury.

I checked my watch—almost dusk. I'd promised my father I'd see the vampires off.

"I need to get ready now," I said softly, running my fingers through her hair.

"Do you want me to come?" Maddie asked, looking up with tired eyes.

"No, you rest. Tonight we'll have dinner, just you and me." I kissed her lips, and she smiled back. Fuck, her smile always made my heart race.

"I'd love that," she replied, her voice carrying a sweet promise.

After a quick shower and change, I hurried to the house where the vampires were staying. When I arrived, their car was already prepared, and they were coming out with my father.

"Sorry I'm late," I said, annoyed with myself for taking too long.

My father smiled. "Oh, don't worry, you're not late." He exchanged meaningful glances with the vampires.

I turned to Victor. "Thanks again, especially for that old journal." That book might have answers about Maddie's powers - exactly what we needed.

"You're welcome, young King," Victor said with old-world respect.

"I'll drive you to the boundary myself," I offered. "Make sure nobody gives you trouble." Not everyone in the pack was thrilled about vampires - that was putting it mildly.

Before getting in the car, Victor told my father: "I'm grateful and hopeful. Thanks for meeting with us. And please thank the Queen for the food."

"We feel the same. I will," my father nodded.

The drive was silent - not a word between me and the three vampires. At the boundary, we all got out to say goodbye.

"Looking forward to seeing you again," I said, extending my hand.

Victor grasped it firmly. "Until next time."

I stood watching their car drive away. I couldn't help wondering: even though the war between our species ended years ago, could I really trust them? Would ancient alliances hold against a common enemy?

I clenched my fist and turned to head home. For Maddie, I had to take this gamble.
