The Human Girl Who Tamed Alpha King Chapter 243
MADDIE
The flames consumed La Meute Fantôme, reaching into the night sky. I couldn't look away. Inside lay everyone we'd lost – friends, neighbors, extended family. Gone forever.
Dad had requested this from King Jace. "A proper send-off," he'd called it. My throat tightened. So many bodies. So many lives ended.
Strong arms wrapped around me from behind. Atlas. My true mate. His chest pressed against my back, solid and warm.
*Are you okay?* His voice whispered directly into my mind. That startled me. Mind links shouldn't work before marking, but with Atlas, normal rules didn't apply. His bloodline, his status as True King – they made him different.
*Yes,* I answered through our connection. *Just sad seeing our home burn like this.*
*I understand. I would feel the same.* His arms tightened, and I leaned back into him.
Hours passed before the fire died down, leaving only ashes where our pack house once stood. Dad stepped forward. The survivors gathered – barely five hundred from what had been thousands. I wanted to run to him, but Atlas steadied me with a gentle touch.
"This is a heavy day," Dad began, his voice carrying across the silent crowd. "We have lost many loved ones, and for that, I am deeply sorry."
He paused, gathering strength.
"But the Moon Goddess has given us hope. The American King and the True King have offered us shelter." He turned toward me. "My daughter Maddie is the True King's mate."
Murmurs rippled through the crowd. My face burned under their stares.
"King Jace has offered us territory in America where an Alpha died without heirs. I've decided to accept for two reasons." Dad's voice grew stronger. "First, I won't abandon our pack. You're all my family. Second, Maddie will be there, and as her father, I want to be nearby."
He raised his hand. "If anyone wishes not to come, arrangements have been made with neighboring packs who have agreed to welcome you."
When he finished, something unexpected happened. Every pack member knelt, heads bowed. The eldest spoke.
"You are our Alpha, our leader, and after you, young Blake will lead us. We will follow you and your family."
Tears filled my eyes as Dad's face showed immense surprise.
"Thank you all. You do me great honor," he responded, voice thick. "King Jace has promised transportation. I will remain here while Blake and the rest of my family will travel to America the day after tomorrow."
ATLAS
The pack members bowed to Louis. Their loyalty struck deep. This was pack – standing together when everything was lost.
My father stepped forward. His face showed the familiar mixture of compassion and controlled rage that made him respected.
"My heart breaks for the tragedy your pack has suffered," he said. "We found Alpha Louis and his family just in time, and we have captured the leader of the attack."
Lucas and Lawrence brought forward a struggling male. The rogue leader. My hands clenched into fists. This piece of shit had tried to force himself on Maddie. Had slaughtered innocents.
"Alpha Louis will deliver justice for you all," my father announced, bowing to Louis before standing beside Maddie and me.
Louis approached the rogue, his aura pulsing with anger. The clearing filled with his rage.
"You and your pack deserve no words from me or my people," Louis growled. "Only death."
The rogue smirked. "You would deny a dying man his last words?"
"Yes, I would." Louis moved fast.
What happened next turned my stomach. Louis ripped out the rogue's tongue first. Blood sprayed across the ground as the man gurgled.
"I saw what your rogues did to my people, to the children," Louis snarled. "So don't think you'll die quickly. You won't."
He dug his claws into the rogue's eyes, gouging them out. Beside me, Maddie turned away, burying her face against my chest. I held her tight. This must be horrible for her, seeing her father this way.
Louis continued, using his claws to inflict deep, bone-exposing wounds before stepping back.
"May hell burn you slowly," he said, slashing the rogue's throat.
The rogue bled out in minutes. Louis walked away without looking back. Lucas nodded to my father, confirming the death.
"Let's go back to camp," I whispered to Maddie. "It's over now."
Back at my tent, I helped Maddie sit on the bed. She looked shaken, body trembling. I knelt before her, taking her hands, stroking them gently. We sat in silence for a long time.
"I've never seen my father like that," she finally whispered.
"Your father has been through much," I explained. "He felt the pain and death of more than half his pack. He saw you nearly forced to be another wolf's mate, which would have broken our bond before it formed."
She nodded, falling silent again.
When she finally looked up, our gazes locked. "I'm ready to leave this place. Ready to be with you."
"I am too. I look forward to you meeting my mother and sisters." Her small smile warmed my heart.
I hadn't asked about the rumors – that she was a special wolf of the Moon Goddess. I needed to, but not now. Not when she looked so fragile.
"Everything will be okay," I said. "Being with me comes with responsibility. But I'm still learning too, so we'll learn together. I know you have a kind heart. That's enough for me."
Her smile grew. "You have a good heart too."
"Not everyone would agree," I joked.
I leaned closer. She didn't pull away. Our lips touched, and electricity shot through my body. Something I'd never felt before.
I rested my forehead against hers, looking into her eyes. She blushed, and I smiled, cupping her face. I kissed her again, longer and deeper.
She made a soft sound that drove me crazy. I pulled her closer, off the bed and onto the floor with me. She moved into my arms willingly.
Tentatively, she threaded her fingers through my hair. I growled softly, startling her. She pulled back, face flushed.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
"Don't be. Sorry I scared you. Luke likes you close." I winked. "So do I."
She blushed harder. "I've never had a boyfriend. No experience."
"That's okay. I'd never judge you."
"Have you had girlfriends?" she asked cautiously.
I chose my words carefully. "No, but I was with another girl. I don't want to lie to you."
"One?" she asked. I nodded.
"Yes, one. A she-wolf whose mate died in an attack. Nothing happened since I felt our bond at the ball. She knew I wanted my true mate. When I told her about you, she wished us well."
"I don't lie either," Maddie said softly. "I understand, and I'm glad nothing happened after you felt our bond."
"You're my life now. When you're ready, we'll mark each other and complete the soul binding ceremony."
"You are my life too. Thank you for your honesty and patience." She kissed me.
We talked for hours, kissing, learning about each other. I was completely certain she was my true mate. I would protect her forever. She was my present and future, my only love.
