ATLAS

Two days later.

I woke with Maddie curled against my chest. Her scent had changed—that intoxicating sweetness that drove me wild for days had faded. Her heat period was over.

"Morning," she mumbled, eyes fluttering open.

"Early, you feeling okay?" I brushed hair from her face.

"Still good, just a bit tired." She stretched and winced slightly.

Luke confirmed what I already knew. *The heat has passed. She needs rest.*

"Stay in bed," I told her. "I'll arrange for food to be sent. I need to check with my father about what's been happening while we've been... occupied."

Something felt wrong. I'd sensed it last night—a disturbance at our territory's edge. Like someone testing our defenses.

"This isn't just your exhaustion talking?" Maddie asked.

"No. Something happened. I'll find out what." I kissed her softly. "Rest."

As I left, unease crawled up my spine. Whatever was happening, I'd make damn sure Maddie stayed safe.

Mom stood in the kitchen when I entered my parents' house. She smiled knowingly.

"Atlas," she greeted me. "Is it over then?"

"Hi, Mom. Yes, the heat has passed. Dr. Maya's potion timing was accurate."

"And Maddie?"

"Tired, but okay. I've arranged for food and asked Dr. Maya to check on her."

Mom nodded approvingly. "I'm proud of you, son. You've matured so much since learning about Maddie."

I ran a hand through my hair. "Where's Dad?"

"He and Marcus took Lawrence to patrol the border. They left before dawn."

Shit. That confirmed my suspicions.

I tracked them through the forest, Luke guiding me through our pack bond. Their scents grew stronger with each step—Dad's powerful and commanding, Marcus's steady, Lawrence's sharp and focused.

They stood at the eastern boundary, examining disturbed ground near our markers.

"Atlas." Dad acknowledged me without looking up.

"Found anything?" I crouched beside him.

Dad's expression hardened. "You know, don't you?"

"I felt it last night. The boundary was breached." I paused. "Not just here. Multiple locations."

Dad's eyes narrowed. "Explain."

"Three territories were breached simultaneously last night. Here, Black Forest Pack, and Alpha Louis's territory."

Marcus cursed. Lawrence's hand moved to his knife.

"How do you know this?" Dad demanded.

"I sensed it through Luke. You felt it too—that's why you're out here. You sensed it because you're the King, your senses stronger than a regular Alpha's."

I stood, pieces falling into place. "They didn't attack. They were testing—seeing if they could cross without detection."

Dad nodded slowly. "Marcus, double the border patrols. Lawrence, prepare the warriors. This is no coincidence."

As we headed back, Dad's voice filled my mind.

*You should be resting with your mate.*

*This is more important,* I replied. *I felt it last night, but the breach didn't lead to an attack, and Maddie's heat wasn't quite finished. I chose to wait.*

*A wise decision.* His approval warmed our mental link. *I'm proud of you, son.*

Dad issued more orders as we approached the castle. "I'll contact Louis and Dylan. Lawrence, send fifty warriors to Louis's territory—I won't have them vulnerable."

"Atlas," Lawrence said, "make sure Maddie knows where to go if there's an attack."

I nodded. "I'll tell her now."

Dad split us up—Lawrence would inform Aurora, Dad would mind-link Lucas, and Marcus would handle Seraphina and Greta. I rushed back to Maddie, worry gnawing at my gut.

MADDIE

Atlas woke me with a gentle touch, his face serious. I sat up, immediately alert.

"Beautiful, you need to wake up," he said, sitting on the edge of the bed. "We need to talk."

My heart raced. "What happened?"

"There was a breach at our boundary last night." His voice stayed steady, but I heard the tension beneath. "No one was hurt. The intruders didn't attack—they were testing our defenses."

"Why would they do that?"

"I don't know. But it wasn't just here." His blue eyes darkened. "There were breaches at two other territories at the exact same time."

My mind raced. "Not just here?"

"Only one here. Another at my mother's former pack, and—"

"At my father's pack," I finished, cold dread filling my stomach.

Atlas nodded. "We've sent warriors to reinforce their territory."

"My family—"

"Will be protected," he assured me, taking my hand. "I promise."

I swallowed hard, trying to focus. "Who would coordinate attacks on three territories?"

Atlas paced, anger radiating from him. "Someone with resources. Someone with a grudge."

Before I could respond, Atlas stiffened, his eyes unfocusing slightly. He was receiving a mental message.

"We need to go," he said. "My father wants us at the house. Now."

My heart pounded as we entered the family home. Jace and Aria sat together on one couch. Lawrence and Aurora stood near the fireplace. Marcus and Seraphina talked quietly in the corner.

An unfamiliar Alpha stood by the window. But what made my heart leap was the sight of my father entering from the kitchen.

"Dad!" I ran to him, embracing him tightly.

"I came as soon as King Jace contacted me," he whispered against my hair. "Are you alright?"

I nodded against his chest. "Better now that you're here."

"King Jace," my father said formally, his arm still around my shoulders. "Thank you for your warning about the intrusion."

Jace nodded. "This is Alpha Dylan Warren," he said, gesturing to the stranger. "He leads the Black Forest Pack, the third territory that was breached. He brings important information."

Alpha Dylan stepped forward. "Two weeks ago, I was contacted by Romeo."

My body tensed. Romeo—the wolf who had rejected Atlas's sister Aurora. His sister Tina had been rejected by Atlas at a ball .

"He wanted information my family had passed down," Dylan continued. "Records about wolves with special abilities."

Aurora frowned. "He couldn't possibly... but why? We don't have any special abilities."

"But I do," I said quietly, realization hitting me. "I have special abilities, and Atlas rejected his sister. That could be his motive for targeting my father's pack."

Jace's expression hardened. "It fits. I'll contact his Alpha to find out what's happening." He turned to Dylan. "If the offer still stands, I think we should move that information here."

Dylan nodded. "I agree."

"I'll handle the protection detail," Atlas said immediately. "If this involves Maddie, I can't sit by. I won't."

Lawrence stepped forward. "I'll go too."

Within an hour, plans were made. The mission would leave at dawn tomorrow. Atlas and Lawrence would lead a team of twelve elite warriors to escort Alpha Dylan and the documents back to our territory. Meanwhile, additional border patrols would be established, and all pack members would travel in groups.

I helped Aria and Aurora prepare dinner for everyone, my hands working mechanically while my thoughts raced. Was I truly the reason for all this trouble? My powers—the ability to make things grow, to feel the energy of the earth—had always felt like a gift. Now they seemed more like a target on my back.
