The Delta's Daughter Chapter 129
This was insane. Absolutely, 100 percent pure madness. How did they even come up with a piece of technology that could control your animal and restrict them from shifting
“It was Vargr’s daughter and King Orion,” Teal said, I must have said it out loud or he read my mind. “His eldest daughter, Shayna, was the brains behind it and Orion supplied the funding and guinea pigs.”
“They are dead. Orion and that bitch died.” I spat their names out like they were poison because that’s what they were poison to the realm of shifters, sick fuckers, and the monsters they created. “My Beta killed Shayna and His other son Mathias killed him.”
“That is the best news I have heard in over 21 years.” A small smile played at the corners of Teal’s lips. “I felt a shift a couple of weeks ago, but because of this,” he tapped the back of his neck “I didn’t know exactly what had transpired, plus I am sure you have noticed young King, that you are unable to mind-link or connect to another wolf Again, the inhibitor.”
That explained why I couldn’t reach Lamia or the other three Knights.
Fuck, I thought. I was truly on my own and could only hope they would find me. I was going to need help getting out of here.
Our conversation was interrupted when a guard came into the barracks compound; with a rolling cart and bowls full of the nasty slop they call porridge.
“Prince-ee, Braids, mute rogue, and omega scum!” He bellowed out so all the Gladiator slaves could hear, “You are up first this afternoon, eat well, this could be your last meal.” He chuckled at the end and was still chuckling as he exited the barracks.
I looked at Ajani and then Teal “When the sun is high and the clock strikes noon, you will be taken to the arena and forced to fight.” His deep rich voice held an undertone of melancholy, laced with something I couldn’t determine, hatred maybe
“How did they even come up with or make these drugs and this thing… this inhibitor chip” I questioned Teal, wanting to know everything.
He got up and walked to the rolling cart, taking one of the wooden bowls and sitting back down. “Shayna was a chemist and very smart with technology, she and Orion concocted all kinds of drugs and serums. With the help of a witch.” He snarled at his last admission. I concluded he had no love for witches, but then I thought they had all died out, the last of the line being Finnegan who was only part witch according to Mathias.
“Now eat, you will need your strength,” Teal said pointing towards the cart.
I got up and stood in line waiting to get a bowl like the other men. I sat back down to eat and the five of us ate in silence. It was a somber silence as all of us wondered what our first Gladiator match would entail.
Before long the sun had reached its high, and the guards came, a dozen of them this time. Each with a cattle prod and called forth the four of us.
“Prince-ee, Braids, Omega scum, and Rogue, let’s go! Grab a weapon and make your way to the arena!” The Beta Baron came marching into the barracks yelling and giving out orders, as he unlocked the weapons area.
I looked at Teal and he nodded towards where the old and blunt swords stood. I grabbed a blade inspecting it. It was worthless, with chipped and dull edges, I would be lucky if it could slice or pierce a mouse.
We followed the Beta out, stepping into the unforgiving blazing sun that scorched the ground. I could feel the heat from the dirt and sand burning the bare soles of my feet.
I felt Conri stir, deep in the back of my mind. ‘Are you with me wolf’ I asked him with hope.
‘I am with you’ His reply was quiet and soft, unlike him. And I had my reservations about exactly just how much he really was with me after what Teal told us.
The arena was packed full, crowds of spectators lined the wall, and the stone bleachers were full of jeering and cheering. I could smell the excitement of hundreds of wolves. They enjoyed this, eager to watch whatever and whoever was going to fight.
The guards and the Beta Baron escorted us to the center of the arena, surrounding us, almost like a shield, but I knew better. They were making sure we were kept in line and didn’t try any funny business. The same tactic was used at home.
The sound of drums began to beat, filling the arena with the steady thumping. The vibrations could be felt beneath my feet. The beat quickened and the Beta Baron walked towards the crowd climbing up the stone steps until he reached a tented section.
He took his place by two large chairs that looked like makeshift wooden thrones. When a large man with wild brown hair stepped out and into the covered tent with a woman who had long blond hair, The Alpha and Luna, the penetrating rudiments of the drums sped up faster and then suddenly came to a halt.
The sudden quietness stilled the air and my wolf’s fur bristled with the change. Murmurs from the crowd could be heard and excited chatter from the young rang out. The voices died down when the Alpha stood.
The guards around us suddenly turned, forming two lines, and then marched from the arena making their way out through a wide entrance below, where the Alpha and Luna sat.
“Let the games begin!” He bellowed. The only four words he spoke before he took his seat again.
We, the four of us stood there looking around, waiting, anticipating.
“Place your bets!” A man’s voice rang out and the excited chatter of the crowd grew once again.
I held the dulled blade in my hand, not having a good feeling when the sound of multiple heavy feet pounding against the ground reached my ears. I turned towards the sound, the same entrance that the guards disappeared from. At the same entrance, 12 more men were appearing.
They smelt like wolves, warriors, strong and trained.
I looked at Ajani and shook my head, this was not good. I then cast my eyes towards the Omega who was shaking and the Rogue who was breathing deeply.
Instincts took over me and I twirled the sword in my hand, getting used to its weight and balance. It was every man for themselves. Twelve trained warriors against four Gladiator slaves.
“Back to back, watch each other’s six! If we want to survive this we are going to have to work together!” I began giving out orders; it was second nature to me. Ajani nodded and understood. The omega backed up towards me, shaking more and the rogue wore a sense of calm as if he had already accepted his death.
“We will not go down without a fight! Grip your weapon tight and do not let go!” I couldn’t give them any more instructions as the harsh blare of a horn filled the arena and the twelve men rushed us.
The Omega, Aaron, was shaking more and almost dropped his weapon. I gripped his hand around the hilt tightly “Do not drop your weapon” I commanded with grit. His eyes were wide and filled with terror and I turned just in time to block the first of many attacks.
