The Delta's Daughter Chapter 40
LAMIA
It was already the end of the week, despite how stressful it had been and all the meetings and planning, time flew.
I glanced in the mirror as I threw on a pair of denim shorts and a purple V-neck tee, pulling my hair into a ponytail, my fingers trailed over Zane’s mark. I smiled; it was the image of the tribal black wolf, his personal signature displayed beautifully on my neck. I couldn’t be more proud to wear it.
It was decided that I would be going back to the Golden Circle pack with Zane, much to Kellen’s protest. Zane had agreed for 20 elite warriors to accompany us. However, they would be travelling with Hunji and Tawny, who were also ordered to accompany us to Zane’s pack.
Zane and I would be travelling by motor-cross bike on a back route through the Blue Moon pack. A precaution just in-case the convoy was attacked. I hated putting my friends in harm’s way and using them as a decoy, but we had a mole and if the attack was truly aimed at me, then we needed to weed them out.
Tyron and Damon had found evidence of the infrared motion detectors and security system we had set up being tampered with. Which means someone knew where they were and how to not only eliminate them but also avoid them as there was nothing on the surveillance videos. They were just cut.
The idea of a mole or traitor made sense. How else would the rogues know when we were leaving the academy? How would the rogue bear be able to navigate the palace so well unless someone gave them information? And how would the rogues know where our cameras were set up and our weakest points of entry, being able to avoid the elite guards successfully? Someone had given them intel. It was the only explanation.
Once at The Golden Circle pack Zane and I would reach out to allies, to see if they would be willing to fight alongside us, while the royal pack sent out trackers to see if they could find more information about who ordered the attack on our birthday as well as why and how bear shifters and were-cats were involved. It was all a little suspicious and out of the norm for it to be a simple rogue attack.
Zane had left early to use Kellen’s office now it had been set up, so he could catch up with emails, calls, and other pack related stuff. I was on my way to the hospital to say goodbye to my parents. Thankfully, my father had woken up last night and it seems that he will make a full recovery. The doctors were able to flush out the majority of the poison from the silver.
It was such a beautiful hot day; I decided to walk the 15min or so to the pack hospital, thinking about how I wouldn’t mind jumping in the pool later.
Everything felt as it should be, normal. Almost. The sky was a clear blue and the early morning sun beat down. As I walked towards the hospital, pack members greeted me. I was happy they weren’t showing fear or looking at me like a freak. I was, however, a little puzzled as everyone I passed bowed their heads in greeting. Maybe it was my Alpha aura that was causing them to do this?
Dad was already awake when I walked into the room, mom still sitting by his side and still looking tired and stressed. Her usual sparkling eyes on the dull side and dark circles of worry still outlined them. I sighed at the sight, saddened that they had to go through this.
“Lamia! My beautiful girl, come here!” My father cheerfully cried as I entered the room, his arms outstretched for hug.
I practically ran into his arms, being careful not to squeeze too tight. After all, he was still recovering. “Daddy, you gave us all a scare. Mom has been worried sick!” I half-heartedly told him off as I pulled out of the hug and sat on the end of the bed.
“I see Alpha Zane has marked you, let me get a good look at your mark.” He reached for me, pulling the collar of my shirt away, his eyes narrowed and lips pursed “My baby girl is all grown up. Your mother has told me plenty about your Alpha and how he protected you.” He sat back after inspecting my mark. “I have to say I was a little more than surprised that you were mated to Alpha Zane, didn’t you guys loath each other?” He chuckled.
His green eyes still held a light and his black hair that was usually slicked down was now sticking up all over the place. His natural tanned skin tone was a pasty color, probably from the loss of blood and poison.
“I’m leaving tomorrow to go back with him to his pack, and before you say anything, I will be fine.” I told him.
“Sweetheart, I am more than sure that Zane can keep you safe, he may a little rough around the edges, but that boy loves you. You didn’t see how he reacted when you shifted, nor did you see the pain in his eyes when the bear shifter attacked us.” My mother said, giving me a weak smile.
She had recounted what had happened in the room when I was out of it and slept through the whole mess of the attack. I still couldn’t believe I had slept through it.
I took my father’s hand in mine, meeting his eyes, and sighed deeply, “before I go, I need to know if there are any more secrets, anything else you two should tell me?”
They looked at each other and both shook their heads before looking at me again. “No sweetheart, as far as we know, you know as much as we do now.” My mother explained.
But something in her eyes told me different. There was still something she was holding back. I wouldn’t press it. She would tell me in her own time. Besides, she needed to concentrate on her mate and maybe she didn’t want to say anything in front of my Dad. Maybe she didn’t want to add to his stress. Ignoring the feeling, I smiled and turned back to my father.
We talked for a while, me, mostly filling them in on all the planning and findings from the past couple of days. It seemed planning was all we did, all we could do right now. Truthfully, I was sick of it. I would rather these rogues’ leaders just show themselves and have an all-out battle and get it over and done with. I hated that people needed to play games. It’s like the foreplay of war. I excelled in battle strategy but hated those who hid and attacked from the shadows like a coward.
I filled them in on my dream, explaining as best as I could. They didn’t seem fazed by the weirdness of it or the information it had presented to me and Kellen. I was hoping they could shed some light and help us figure out exactly what that dream meant, if it really meant anything. The dream had given Kellen and I some clarity, and it felt real, but we were still grasping at straws. There was no solid indication of what it all meant or what we should do with the little information.
Right now it was like we were blindly putting together a puzzle with a lot of pieces missing and no picture to guide us.
“Honey, why don’t you nip down to the vending machine and grab us some sandwiches, so we can eat together, before Lamia has to go pack.” My father suggested to my mom after a little while. His tone was always soft and patient with her. I had never seen my father raise his voice to my mother and he never looked at her with anything but love, the same way Zane looks at me. My heart swooned at the thought of him.
I was still sitting on the end of the bed when my mom obediently went to fetch food. No sooner had the door closed, my father turned to me, grabbing and clasping my hands tightly in his, a look of distress and determination in his eyes.
“Lamia, you need to be careful. You are the strongest wolf in the whole of the kingdom, and they will come for you. You need to be prepared. There is a war coming and you will be the centre of it. Be careful who you trust right now and do not let your emotions cloud your judgment. This is where your story starts, my dear daughter. I want you to reach out to your uncle, my brother Timothy, Alpha of the Black moon pack, he will help you.”
I looked at him shocked and surprised, my mouth opening and closing like a goldfish as he rushed out his words. Before I could reply, the door opened and mom had returned with the pre-made lunch.
I hesitantly nodded at my father. It was noticeable that his words were only meant for me, as he put on a huge smile for his wife and dismissed the conversation we were having and moved all his attention to her.
After lunch, I gave them both hugs and kisses, promising I would pop in tomorrow before we left to say goodbye. I had just reached outside when I felt a mind link pushing through.
*Hey doll, where are you?” Zane’s rough and cold voice sounded in my head.
*mmm, I miss you too sexy. I have just left the hospital. I should be back at the palace in about 20min*
*Sounds good, did you eat?* he asked.
*I did, thinking I might take a dip in the pool when I get back after packing*
* OK, see you soon sexy, I will join you after I finish up here. The king wants us all to have dinner together tonight on the Alpha floor*
*ooh sounds good. See you soon handsome*
With a smile on my face and half skipping, I started back towards the palace when my phone started ringing. I pulled it out of my pocket and looked to see it was Kira calling.
“Kira!” My voice rang out merrily. I missed her. I hadn’t even gotten to say goodbye to her.
Although Kira’s voice wasn’t as cheerful, I detected an undertone of hastiness and worry. “Lamia! Where have you been, goddess girl I was so worried!”
“I’m here at the palace; I’m OK, are you? I have tried calling and texting you…”
“Yes, yes, I’m fine, now tell me what the heck happened, where did you go during the pack run?” I hummed at her question, she sounded more annoyed than anything now.
“Jeesh girl, I got a lot to tell you…” I said. Ignoring her misplaced tone, I told her what happened that night and that I was mated to Zane, which did grant me an excited squeal from her. I also told her how I would be moving there tomorrow too “…So yah, I guess I am Luna of the Golden circle pack now.” I finished, sure that my beaming smile could be heard through the phone.
“Wow, mated to Zane Noir, one of the strongest Alphas in the kingdom. You are so lucky and he really is yummy.” The excitement she was trying to portray just wasn’t quite making it through in her voice, and had me wondering if there was something going on with her that she wasn’t telling me.
“Kira, I have to go, but are you OK? If you want to tell me something, or something is bothering you, you can tell me. You’re my best friend and I am here for you.” I truly was concerned, I could tell something was just off with her but couldn’t put my finger on it.
“Girl, I’m good, just call me when you get to Golden Circle. Maybe I can come and visit. Get some girl time in?” I agreed with her, though her words didn’t sound like they were genuine.
I hung up, promising to call her in the next couple of days and figure out what was going on with her.
