The Delta's Daughter Chapter 182

TRAVIS

*Rhett, bring me the proposals for the new Enforcers buildings in Myrtle Cove* I opened up a link to my Gamma, he replied immediately and I turned back to Josiah, my Beta.

“He is on his way” I informed him while shuffling some papers and stacking them to the side of me. “So what choices do we have left for the Delta position” I asked Josiah. I had already turned down the last five candidates. None of them were what I wanted or what I thought MacTire needed.

MacTire was a kingdom and while regular packs had an Alpha, Beta, and Gamma, Royal packs had a different hierarchy. It went Alpha, Beta, Delta, and then Gamma.

Gamma’s were more of an adviser role, while strong and could lead a team of warriors, that was the Delta’s job, they were third in command and led our armies. They were our generals. It's what I was to Lamia even though I never dropped the Alpha title. Rhett’s position of Gamma was still highly praised but he was a hybrid and the queen, Lamia, had already tasked him with setting up a new council of sorts; enforcers, shifters, hybrids, and humans who would enforce the Queen and King of shifters laws. They were not much different from the laws we had now, but Rhett would put together special teams around the continent and place them in each kingdom. Working closely with the council they would investigate any crimes and bring those responsible to trial.

The door opened and Rhett walked in, dropping the files on my desk before taking a seat next to Josiah. “No luck with a Delta yet” Rhett asked, pulling a smoke from his pocket.

“Don’t smoke that in here!” Josiah groaned scowling.

“I wasn’t about to, I just wanted to get on your nerves,” He laughed at his best friend.

“Dude you are half-human, that shit will kill you eventually you know.” Josiah pointed at the rolled-up tobacco Rhett was twiddling through his fingers.

“We all gotta die at some point my friend,” he laughed “Besides, every one of us is born with an expiration date the day we are born, it just wasn’t filled in.”

“So morbid,” rolling his eyes, Josiah complained.

“Could we get on with shit” I said annoyed with the banter between them “I have shit to do and would like to leave this office at a decent time for once.”

“Does Alpha have a date” Josiah jested.

The truth was, no I did not have a date, and, neither did I want one. Recently my wolf had been complacent, constantly in a state of restlessness and the only way to calm him down was to run for hours. If I didn’t let him out he would become irate and foul. A few times he had gone as far as to take over when I was sleeping, causing an uproar around the castle or finding a shifter to have his fun with. His sex drive was higher than it had ever been, and it was not what I wanted.

After Lamia, I had no desire to seek out any females. I didn’t want them touching me. It felt wrong. I still had nightmares and she had been the only one to soothe them back into the darkness from whence they came. Like tendrils of evil, seeping from my aura, she would push them back. Locking them away until they managed to find a crack and slither through again.

Rhett’s phone rang pulling my attention back to the room, he stood up, taking it out of his back pocket, ready to answer it. When the phone fell from his hands and he dropped to the floor, Josiah quickly went to him, concerned for his best friend.

Rhett’s body began to shake and a warning growl rumbled from him. He snapped his eyes up and that’s when I saw they were black and the barely visible white mark of a cross settled in his eyes.

“Don’t touch him!” I ordered Josiah and he stepped back immediately, his beast trying to fight the command as he worried for his friend. All I thought about was the last time I had seen this, the night Hunji attacked me and Petra. “He may be going feral” I offered a reason for my command.

Rhett’s body began to shake and clambered to his knees throwing his head back eyes open and trained on the ceiling, stretching his arms out wide he began speaking in a voice that was foreign to my ears.

I call upon the power of the Knights, your brother needs you. Take his pain and lessen the burden share it, and give back your strength. My Queen commands this of you."

Then he began to count ‘One, two, three, four, five, six, seven…’

I looked at Josiah, then back to Rhett, “What is happening” Josiah asked. I could hear the unease in his voice as he swept his hands through his hair, he held uncertainty, he was scared. I could tell he wanted to go to his friend but because of my command, he couldn’t.

I scratched my beard, then smoothed it down as I looked at my Gamma in a state of distress. Observing the scene in front of me, Rhett’s phone rang again. “Answer it,” I told Josiah.

“Hello…. Ria, umm he can’t come to the phone, he is busy.” I listened to him converse and snapped my eyes to him “What! The same thing is happening to Rhett right this very instance!” Josiah’s eyes met mine and he swallowed loudly. “Yes, ok.” He hung up.

“Lamia was suspended in mid-air, her wolf talking through her, saying the same thing as Rhett,” Josiah told me, biting his bottom lip and shifting uncomfortably where he stood.

Rhett didn’t have a wolf, so who’s voice was he speaking with I cast my eyes back to my Gamma who hadn’t moved from his position and was still counting.

‘Twenty-nine, thirty, thirty-one…’

“Ria said to let him finish whatever he is doing.” I nodded my head and kept observing Rhett.

I saw claws extend from his hands and his teeth poked out over his bottom lip, when he reached 100, his body collapsed and his eyes rolled into the back of his head.

Rhett was still a mystery, he had no wolf yet when the powers from the mark of the Knight pushed through he could grow claws and canines. He was an anomaly, a wolf-less shifter. He was interesting and my wolf had been studying him for some time now.

"Take him down to the cells, until he cools off and wakes up, We don't want a repeat of Hunji" I commanded my Beta. My hand found my beard and rubbed my chin through the thick hair again as I contemplated this new development.
