The Delta's Daughter Chapter 154
Day 8 of The Gladiator Games
KELLEN
I sat on the floor next to Ajani’s cot, as he slept soundly still recovering from yesterday's fight. Although there were no deaths, Ajani had been severely wounded. A blade from an opponent had dug itself deep into his side.
A guard had given us some fishing wire and a dull needle to patch him up with. While Rogue and I had held him down, Teal stitched him up. His wolf healing was slow and it would take several days before he was up and about. We had been taking it in turns to sit with him, as he developed a fever in the middle of the night and we had no medication to give him.
“No Gladiator slave is allowed to receive herbs” The guards had told us as we pleaded for them to give us anything, even alcohol so we could at least sterilize the wound.
“He will either survive or die” Is what they said before turning their backs on us.
Teal had led the Gladiators in training today, and I lifted my head to him as he walked over to Ajani’s cot and bent over to check his wound.
Ajani made a pained grumbling sound and Teal clicked his tongue before sighing. “I think he will make it, but he is scheduled to fight tomorrow.” Teal grimaced his eyes trailing over Ajani.
He was thinking the same as me, that there was no way Ajani would be able to fight tomorrow. “I will take his place,” I said standing up. My mind was made up. I was still perplexed about my mate being so close to Oliver yesterday, he had held her by the elbow tightly, smiling down at her like she was his prized doll. I could see the uncomfortable look on her face, so I was sure she wasn’t enjoying being in his company but still, jealousy reared its ugly head every time I glanced to towards the Alpha’s tent.
“If they let you,” Teal sighed before straightening up and looking at me. “I’m not sure they will, but it is worth a try. I think you pissed Vargr off by eliminating the visiting Alphas Gladiators and their horses.” A ghost of a smile played at the corner of his lips as he said this.
Yes, it was true. Ajani, I, and one of the other Gladiators were put into the arena to fight yesterday. We pitted against five opponents, who were all on horseback wielding various weapons, When Ajani got injured I felt a fit of protective anger rise within me and my wolf. The results were me, slicing the legs of each horse and bringing the rider down to my level, and seriously injuring the five men. Two of which were left with life-threatening wounds. I doubted they survived through the night. The fight was stopped before I could carry out my revenge on the other three.
As the fight was called to a stop and Vargr’s warriors came marching in and circling me, I caught a glimpse of my mate from under his tent. Her eyes were wide with worry but the inconspicuous smile on her face told me she was proud of me. My wolf, Conri, had relished in the idea that he had impressed his mate.
The day moved slowly and I kept within the shadows of the barracks, keeping out of the sun's hot rays. In our continent, summer would be just beginning, and my and Lamia’s birthdays were just around the corner. Here it seemed like summer had already grasped the hardened land and only when night fell did it cool down significantly giving us a break from the scorching heat.
When dusk began to settle, I left Ajani’s aide and went to my own cot. Rogue now looking over him. I laid down closing my eyes, hoping that sleep would find me.
When it did I dreamt of Lamia. Her greens eyes pierced through the blackness that I fell into, until I found myself in that all too familiar library Lamia would dream of, rows upon rows of shelves lined with books that looked older than time.
From the darkness, I could see her glowing emerald orbs and chased them. In my dream, I finally caught up to her, but she was different. Gone was her streaked hair, in place of the golden and black streaks, she had cropped short and completely black hair. Three glowing orbs surrounded her, circling her like the hands of a clock. The orbs of light were warm and welcoming and beckoned for me to touch them.
As I reached my hand out to touch one they dropped to the ground, their light diminishing quickly, Lamia fell to the ground along with them, her face looked pained and her eyes had lost their glow. She cried out soundlessly and I tried to reach for her, to comfort her. She doubled over, again crying out with a silent scream.
‘Lamia’ I called to her, but she just kept crying out, holding her stomach on her knees as her face crumpled in despair. My words were soundless as I tried to reach her. Suddenly, she began to fade and in her place the soft glow of a light began to take form, brightening as the minutes ticked by.
The glow became brighter and my surroundings became focused again. This time, I was still in the library but there sat a fireplace with two high-back leather chairs facing it. I could see a figure sitting in one of the chairs but as I approached the person, I heard my name being called from a far-off distance.
The voice calling my name sounded so familiar pulling me towards them. I tried to ignore the voice, but it was too strong and pulled me back into the darkness. The library and the person sitting in the chair faded away sending me back into the black abyss.
“Kellen, Kellen,” The deep voice and the shaking feeling startled me from my sleep and I found I had woken up in a cold sweat.
“Kellen,” Teal said again as I came too, “Are you ok” He asked.
I nodded trying to collect my thoughts, the feeling of despair still sat with me, the image of Lamia’s pained face not fading anytime soon. A feeling of panic had come over me in my unconscious state, not being able to communicate with Lamia in the library. The vision of the three orbs falling to the ground and Lamia falling after them gave me a tight pinch in my chest.
A worrying feeling for my best friend seated itself in the pit of my stomach.
“What is it, Teal” I asked hoarsely, rubbing my eyes while regaining my composure and trying to shake off the feeling that something was wrong, that Lamia could be in trouble.
“Someone is here to see you, come quickly, young King.” He said nudging me to stand.
Dazed and confused I stood to my feet, wondering who would want to see me and why I followed Teal through the barracks quietly so as not to disturb anyone, when we reached the common grounds he told me “They are waiting for you in the weapons room.
I gave him a puzzled look, usually, the weapons room was locked up by this time of night, it was only opened during the day when they had more guards and allowed us to train.
