Day 15 of The Gladiator Games

TALA

“Eloise! Tala!” Jasper's frantic voice could be heard along with his hurried footsteps.

We didn’t get a chance to see him yesterday and he had put a block up to us. So when he sent us a mind link early in the morning to meet him at our usual nook in the library, Eloise and I had rushed here.

“Jasper, what’s wrong” My friend rushed to his side quickly seeing the panic in his eyes and the distress that his whole posture held. His light green eyes were rimmed red from exhaustion and his brown hair was ruffled like he had been grabbing it all night.

“Jasper…” The state of his discountenance caused my own heart to flutter with anxiety. Something had really unsettled him.

He shook his head seeming perplexed “He is going to kill him,”

“Who” Both Eloise and I said before Jasper could even utter another word.

“He knows, fuck, he knows he is your mate Tala! He is going to kill him today if he survives the arena. He is making him fight again, changed the whole schedule.”

I felt my chest constrict with burning pain, and panic began to rise. I looked from Jasper to Eloise and again back to Jasper, the words sinking in. “How does he know Was it Oliver”

He shook his head again “No, it wasn’t Oliver. They brought Teal in, because of your mate's actions. Questioned him and when he wouldn’t give him answers about the Wolf King they beat him, gave him a high dose of wolfsbane and… and they almost killed him.” Jasper ran a hand down his face then squared his eyes at mine. “Tala, I have to tell you something, I swear I only found out last night,” Jasper took a deep breath closing his eyes for a second as he prepared to tell me something I knew was going be to life-altering.

“Vargr is not your father…”

“I know,” I cut him off “Teal is.” My shoulders slumped all these years Vargr had hated me and I could never understand why I wasn’t good enough for him, but now I did. “I realized myself yesterday, my mother gave me a hint and when he was brought into the palace, it finally dawned on me.”

A look of relief briefly passed through Jasper's eyes and he pulled El into his arms, inhaling her scent, instantly he calmed down, his body relaxing, his posture seeming to ease. Eloise melted into him and I felt jealous that I couldn’t do that with my mate which, brought me back to the point of Jasper declaring that Vargr knew he was my mate and was going to kill him.

“Jasper, how does he know Kellen is my mate” I got a sympathetic look from both of my friends.

“He guessed when he was questioning Teal about him, someone said they saw him leave the guards lounge right after you. I don’t know who the spy is, but if I am correct, it was Jack.” He blew out an exaggerated breath “I can’t think of anyone who would betray us, they would have nothing to gain from it. One of our friends had reported seeing Jack wandering around the compound that night; he is the only person I can think of. Plus Vargr saw your mark on Kellen, Tala…”

“And… Teal” I asked the words catching in my throat. I had really fucked up by marking Kellen, if he dies this would be my entire fault. I would be the cause of my mate dying.

“He is alive, barley, he refused to say anything but his silence just confirmed your father’s paranoia.” Shit, this was so not good. “He is throwing Kellen into the ring this afternoon to fight, if he lives he is going to kill him anyway. Vargr said the trouble he was causing was not worth the money.”

Despite my turmoil and fear, I couldn’t help but scoff. Since when did my father brush money aside Kellen must have really rattled his cage yesterday for him to discard a money maker.

“I have to go.” I suddenly said out loud, thinking of the one person who could possibly help us out of this mess. Oliver.

I picked up my sister's diaries Eloise and I had been reading through, handing four of them to Jasper and keeping one tightly wrapped in my fingers. The blueprints for the chips had told us nothing we didn’t already know. You either died or killed whoever was controlling the chips.

“El, show him the diaries, I have to go see someone.” I was only half there, my mind someplace else, so my words were mumbled and strained. I couldn’t let Kellen die. No, the moon goddess could not be that cruel.

I ran out of the library, rushing through the corridors so fast that my hair had come unpinned and was wildly flying behind me. The book was grasped in one hand while the other lifted my long lemon tunic dress so I wouldn’t trip on it while I was running.

I knocked on the guest suite, with heavy and rapid knuckles. Please be there, I thought. The door opened and I barged in, noticing Oliver was only covered in a low-lying towel. His appearance frazzled me for a second. I took note of the scars on his body from past fights or battles.

My eyes roamed over him, another place another time and if he had been any kind of a decent wolf, his lean and toned frame may have had me licking my lips. I shook the sight of Oliver in a towel with his blond hair still wet from my head and turned my back on him “Please get dressed.” I sighed.

“Why princess Afraid you might want me That you might like what I have to offer you” I could hear the smirk in his voice and the rustle of him putting clothes on.

I huffed in annoyance “You wish.” Suddenly I felt his body press against my back.

“Yes, I think I would quite like you wanting me, I wouldn’t turn you down.” I cringed at the creepy way he flirted with me and then shuddered with how close he was to me. I took a step forward, away from him.

“I know, you know what happened yesterday, you were in there with them. You are going to help me save Kellen.” I turned around, thankful he had a shirt and a pair of pants on now, looking him dead in the eyes. I wasn’t asking for him to help, I was telling him he was going to.

He took a step back from me, scrutinizing me with a cold and beady look, a ring of orange gleamed in his otherwise hazel eyes, flashing his wolf. “Why would I help you save him” He glared at me.

“Because I have what you and Jack want,” I said with confidence holding up one of my sister's diaries. I gave him a smug look, now was no time to show this sly wolf weakness. He had to help me, he just had to.

“Oh” He raised his eyebrows, losing the cold glare and replacing it with one of interest. His personality shift was so fast it made me hesitate.

“Yes, and per our deal, you will help me save Kellen for the map of the mines and the location of your witch.” I tapped my finger on my lips, pursing them, and paced the room slightly “If you help me save Kellen, I won’t just hand you the map to the mines, I will sweeten the deal” I let my words trail and stopped my pacing to observe his reaction.

“Go on, I’m listening,” He growled.

“In fact, you won’t even have to get in the mines, I will personally deliver two sacks full of diamonds to you and I’m not talking about small pouches. You won’t have to lift a finger to get a whole shit load of diamonds. But you won’t get them until Kellen is out of the compound.” I finished, hoping to the moon that he would accept the deal and not screw me over.

“And the location of the witch” He asked and I threw the diary at him. He caught it and examined it.

“It’s all in there, it seems my sister knew more than anyone thought, and true to her nature she recorded it all down in her diary. The last known location of the witch is amongst those pages.”

“You have a deal princess. I warn you though, if I don’t get my payment, I will come back for you.” He promised while thumbing through the pages of Shayna’s leather book.

“And if you don’t help secure Kellen, you won’t get your jewels, Oliver,” I promised back to him.
