“Can we trust what he has told us” Abner asked as we sat in Mathias's office.

“I trust him.” I said, “So far Finn has not shown any signs of lying, and he has been more than cooperative.”

“Yet he still had the balls to make demands,” Mathias grunted from his chair, he was sitting behind his desk and I was pacing back and forth.

We had questioned Finnegan, and true to himself he had told us everything. From, his mother not dying, when Orion claimed, but many years later after she birthed another child from Orion. A daughter who was 5 years younger than Finnegan, and had been locked away since she was 15 years old, To how when Orion did kill Finn’s mother, he left her corpse to rot in the cell with her daughter.

He told us about the inhibitor chips Orion’s bitch, Shayna, had invented. He knew how they worked but he didn’t know how they were made or how to deactivate them, which is why we sent for Damon. Who was currently with Xander trying to figure the thing out

We showed Finnegan pictures of Petra that Travis had sent us, and also admitted that she had been worried about him. His features softened when he saw she was okay.

“He only demanded to know about Petra, and for us to find his sister.” I chided my mate. “If it was Xander, you would want him to be okay, right” I think I was a little more sensitive to the matter seeing as we still had no leads on Kellen.

“It still doesn’t sit right with me. He spent his whole life serving Orion, who’s to say he isn’t as sick-minded as that fuck” Mathias lent back in his chair sweeping a hand through his now longer black hair, which I loved, more to grab on to. “I just don’t trust him, and I don’t trust him around you.” He said giving me a pointed look.

“He saved my life, King, he sent us warnings about the attack on MacTire. For a man who was controlled by his father mentally and electronically, He risked his own life trying to do the right thing and as far as Petra is concerned, she told us how protective he was of her. That Finn did everything to keep her away from harm.” I tried explaining.

I trusted Finn, I don’t know why, maybe because he saved my life, maybe because he was so concerned about Petra, maybe because I could see his heartbreak when he talked about his sister. Or maybe it was because of my hormones.

I rubbed my belly, I was close to four months pregnant and I looked like I was ready to give birth. Fucking triplets. I stopped my pacing and Mathias quickly jumped up, taking me in his arms.

“You need to stop stressing little wolf, this is not good for the cubs.” He soothed.

“Pups.” I countered.

“Babies.” He said chuckling. We were still not sure what the babies would come out as. As they grew, their scents became stronger and usually, you could smell the shifter you carried, but the three scents were so mixed that you couldn’t pinpoint and separate just one of the babies’ scents. I was sure at least one was a cub, but I wasn't going to tell King that and give him the satisfaction to gloat.

Mathias had urged me to get a scan done, not something wolves generally did because our wolf could tell us when the baby was due, or alert us if there was a problem, they would even know the sex of the pups. However, my wolf, Inanna was just as baffled as we were. So tomorrow I would be going to a hospital in Lonely City for a scan, so we could get a better look at the little sprouts inside me.

I was both excited and nervous and so was Mathias.

Xander and Damon came bursting into the office just then, wide and cheesy grins on their faces.

“We got it.” Xander exclaimed “Your boy Damon here is a fucking genius! Even I’m impressed.” True, Damon was a genius, but Xander was not without skills either. They were two of the smartest people I knew.

“Ria is going to be jealous of your bromance,” Mathias chuckled at his brother “With how close you two have been working together it’s a no wonder you haven’t completed your mating bond yet.”

“Fuck off. That’s none of your business, brother!” Xander said, clenching his teeth, giving King an angry glare.

Xander stepped over to the mini bar and poured himself and Damon a drink, handing the third glass to Mathias, who shook his head and pushed the glass away. Ever since he had been drugged he hadn’t touched a drop of liquor. He used me and my pregnancy as an excuse, but I knew better. He had hated the way he treated me, what he did to me and said to me.

I had to give him props for his restraint, but it also showed just how much he loved me.

“So what do you guys have” Abner asked, taking Mathias's drink instead and sipping it.

“Well,” Damon scratched his head, searching for the right words “Okay, so, what separates shifters from humans” He asks us looking around the room.

“Umm, the fact that we have a counterpart, a spirit animal.” Mathias says looking at Damon as if to say ‘where is this going'

“Ok, yeah, I’ll give you that. But, the other thing that makes us different is our abilities; it is widely known that shifters have a larger access to their brain capacity, thus allowing us to communicate with our wolves as well as mind-linking, speak telepathically.” He shifts from foot to foot, “Now bear with me, this thing, it’s exactly what Finnegan said it was, an inhibitor. However, this little piece of genius work doesn’t work on humans or anyone who doesn’t have a counterpart.” He smiles at the tiny metal object he’s holding between his fingers and you cannot miss his excitement over this piece of advanced technology.

“What Xander and I found out, is one: Once it has been inserted, four tiny prongs latch on to the base of the neck and send out a frequency that’s disrupting the shifters counterpart,” Damon waves his hands around animatedly, the more he explains the louder he gets and the more excited he becomes.

“Like a radio wave.”Xander supplies.

Mathias scrunches his eyebrows together “You mean like ghosts and white noise”

“BINGO!” Damon points at him showing a wide toothy grin “Two: The center of the chip is infused with blood, so whoever made these, or whoever’s blood is infused in it, can control whoever has been injected with it. Do you see where I am going with this It’s very complex and quite genius.” His smile fades and a frown replaces it.

“But it’s also very dangerous and immoral. The chip isn’t just designed to control it is also designed to kill. It can give out two short bursts of voltage, one directed at your heart, the other directed at your brain, effectively killing you where you stand. There are only a few ways to deactivate it, you either, die by natural causes or it kills you, or a high voltage of electricity can spark it out, again the amount of voltage it would take to that would kill you. Like being struck by lightning.”

“Basically, if you try to shift, the chip reacts to the frequency of your spirit animal, trigging the mechanism, ergo, it sends out its own frequency, in the form of a shock. Like a defense mechanism.” Xander put it in Layman’s terms for us, and a collective “Oh” came from me, Mathias and Abner, now making sense to us.

“So how did it deactivate in Finn” I asked curiously, wanting to start pacing again as I processed the information. “He didn’t die, almost but I stopped Mike before he delivered the final blow.”
