*Tristan*

Early the next morning, the day after Mark’s poisoning, I am up before the crack of dawn and outside near the gate, down the road from the castle, pacing.

The other Alphas are busy, and that’s for the best. They don’t need to know what I'm up to. Not yet anyway.

Recently, the four of us have been acting like we have one head and can’t make any decisions for ourselves. Every time one of us gets mildly “out of line,” Mark throws a hissy fit like a little baby.

Well, he’s still incapacitated, so this is the perfect time for me to take a bit of control of the situation.

But if this plan doesn’t start to come to fruition in a few minutes, I’m going to abandon ship and head back to the castle. Mark might be out for the count, but Eli and Reece are going to figure out eventually that I didn’t accidentally let Mr. Whiskers out into the north garden. They can only yell, “Here, kitty, kitty, kitty!” so many times before they lose their voices.

Besides, Emily or Barbara are likely to reply, anyway. I shake my head. They’re looking for kitty, not pussy.

I hear a sound on the road outside of the gate and stick my head through the bars to look and see if anyone is coming.

“Sir, we can open that for you,” one of the guards on duty says. I’ve been ignoring them for the most part. They’re just Omegas. I don’t like to put people into categories, but if there was a group of people that ranked right above boll weevil, it would be Omegas.

“I know that,” I tell him. “I am an Alpha. I know how gates work. I’m just looking.” In the distance, I see the person I’ve been waiting for. I know it’s him, even though he’s in his wolf form. He smiles at me, and I shoot a hand through to wave at him. Then, I try to pull my head back through the gate.

And can’t….

I swear under my breath and try again, but all I do is smash my ears.

Visions of my head slathered in butter come to mind, as well as the angry faces of the other Alphas, and I twist my head one more time and wrench it out. My ears might’ve fallen on the other side of the wrought iron spokes, but I’m out.

“Open the fucking gate,” I tell the guard who is laughing at me under his breath, and he does just that.

When he sees there are about thirty wolves pouring through, his eyes fill with alarm.

“Relax,” I tell him. “These guys are here because I invited them.”

He doesn’t look any more calm.

I take in the group in front of me, and my breath catches in my throat.

“What the actual hell?” I ask, knowing that the Alpha in front of me can answer me with the mind-link since we are of the same rank.

“What?” he asks. “These are my best troops.”

I look them over. One really is missing an ear. Another stops to scratch himself with a back leg, drawing blood from the flesh between patches of fur. Another has nipples so long they’re dragging the ground, which makes me think she just had pups. Maybe as many as Rose is about to have….

No, this is not what I had in mind.

“Morris!” I yell. “When I spoke to you on the phone last night, you said you had an excellent group of warriors to bring with you!”

“No, Alpha, I said I had an excellent group of wolves to bring with me. I didn’t claim they were warriors,” Alpha Morris says via the mind-link. He is just as scrawny and awkward as a wolf as he is as a human.

I shake my head and grab a hunk of hair, nearly ripping out a handful of my signature curls. “Somehow, I totally doubt that.”

“No, it’s true,” Morris argues. “What we lack in finesse, we make up for in intelligence. My wolves are far smarter than any others you’ll ever encounter.”

I look them over. One in the back has his paw shoved up his nose. He’s literally trying to pick his boogers with his paw.

I want to point this out and tell them how stupid they are, but I did just get my head stuck in a gate.

“Besides, I know a secret about Luna Barbara, something that will blow your mind!” Morris says, his eyes widening.

I look at him skeptically as I hear in my head, “Tristan? Where are you? I can’t find this cat anywhere!”

“I’m… still looking… by the purple flowers…” I tell Reece. They probably can’t find him outside because Mr. Whiskers is in my bathroom.

“What do you know, Morris?” I ask with a huff.

He takes a step forward, like he needs to whisper in my ear even though he’s using the mind-link. “Luna Barbara is working with… Alpha Kane!” he declares.

I roll my eyes and shake my head. “I told you on the phone that we were trying to convince King Gene of that, dumbass. It’s not true!”

“No, it is true!” he declares. “And I can prove it!”

Emily

One week!

I have one week to show my stupid ass cousin that I am queen material, and I have no fucking idea how I’m going to do it.

That little bitch won’t even let me have my old room back! Instead, he has me in a wing of the castle completely separate from the Alphas. He says it’s the best place for me. I can’t fucking believe him.

Finished with stewing in my room, I decide to go out and see if I can find one of the Alphas. It’s still early morning, and I’m usually not up this early, but I need attention. I hear some people walking around in the hallway near my room, so I decide to go and investigate.

“The rooms are nice,” someone is saying, and I can’t help but scoff. These rooms are not nice!

I step around a corner and nearly run into someone. When I see who it is, I leap backward.

“Alpha Morris!” I shout. “What the hell are you doing here? I thought the Alphas must’ve torn you apart for trying to kill their beloved Breeder.”

“Nope. I’m here as a guest of one of the Alphas. He needs me for a secret plan. We’re going to–” He immediately stops talking, realizing he’s almost said too much.

“Help them with what?” I ask.

“Uh, uh, uh!” he wags his finger in my face, and I think about chomping it off. “I can’t tell you. It’s between me and my Alpha friend. He’s my best friend.”

I bite back a laugh. “Which one of the Alphas is your best friend?” I ask him.

He continues to shake his head like a little kid. “I can’t tell you. My very best friend might get mad. He said I’m here on a secret mission. The keyword is secret. So I can’t say anything that might make Tristan angry at me, you see.”

I keep my face straight. The moron doesn’t even realize that he’s just told me.

Why the hell would Tristan invite this sorry ass Alpha back to the castle when I made him try to stab that Rose whore?

“Well, you should help me,” I tell him, folding my arms. “I’m trying to take down Luna Barbara.”

His eyes widen a bit and then he declares, “Oh, I know lots of secrets about her.”

He’s got my attention now, though I’m not sure I believe him. His secret is probably that she has to sit down when she pees….

“What secret do you know?” I ask him.

“Oh, I’d be happy to tell you, beautiful Miss Emily,” he says with a twinkle in his eye that makes my stomach turn over.

“Go ahead,” I urge him.

His head shakes so fast, I think he might lose it. I imagine it spinning off and lodging in the wall across from us. Then, he’d be out of my way again.

Problem solved….

“I can’t tell you,” he insists. “It’s a secret.”

“Because Alpha Tristan would get mad?” I ask, rolling my eyes.

He inhales so deeply, I feel myself being sucked toward him. “How did you know I was working with Alpha Tristan?”

“I’m a mind reader,” I tell him.

“No, you’re not. If you were, you would be able to tell me the secret about Luna Barbara!”

He’s got me there. “Fine, well, I can only read minds that have something to do with the Alphas.”

He nods, his mouth forming a perfect O, like he believes me.

“So you’re just going to have to tell me what you know about Barbara.”

His grin widens. “Sure. I’ll tell you,” he says. “But everything comes at a price.”

I scoff at him. I’ve got plenty of money, but my purse is back in my room. “How much?”

He’s shaking his head again. I hope no one walks by and gets hit with a flying head. “It’s not money I want,” he tells me, his head stopping so that he can wiggle his eyebrows at me.

“Then what?” My stomach tightens. I probably don’t want to know.

He says, “Take my… virginity.”
