In a seedy bar, in a village I’ve never been in before, I’m approached by a questionable looking man who wants to know if this baby I’ve got strapped to my chest is the only one I have to sell.

“What do you mean?” I ask him. “Do I look like I just had a fucking litter of pups?”

He chuckles under his breath. “No, gorgeous. You don’t look like you just gave birth to a damn pup at all. I’m just asking because I kind of got the impression that one isn’t yours. Maybe you got some sort of a baby trafficking ring going on?”

It’s an interesting question. I should probably tell him no, that this is the only baby I have, and it's mine, that I gave birth to the pup myself, and the reason I look so great is because I have fabulous genes.

But I know that the Alphas are going to be on to me soon, and I need to get rid of these brats as quickly as possible, so even though it might be more profitable for me to get rid of the kids one at a time, if he wants to offer me a price for all three, I’m down with that.

“I’ve got three,” I tell him. “Two boys and one girl. You interested in all of ‘em?”

“Maybe,” he says. “Let me see that one.”

I look down at the little girl. She’s sleeping right now. It’s the first time she’s shut her damn mouth since the car wreck. I’m leery of moving her for fear she might start screeching again.

But I can’t expect him to make an offer on a baby without examining it. Reluctantly, I unstrap her and hand her over to him. Immediately, she starts to whimper.

“Holy hell!” he says. “When was the last time you changed this kid’s diaper? She’s loaded!”

I hadn’t noticed, honestly. I’ve been so nervous about getting the babies sold, it didn’t even register that she’d shit herself.

With a frustrated sigh, I take a diaper out of the pack and plop her down on the bar.

“What the fuck you think you’re doing?” the barkeep asks me. “You are not changing a shitty diaper in here! Go in the bathroom!”

I grumble again but lift her up and do what he says, going into the bathroom and changing her diaper.

Thankfully, I know how to do this now. There’s no changing table since this is a bar, but I do see a counter by the sink, so I plop her down there and get her pants changed. He wasn’t kidding–she was full all right. I imagine the other babies are probably needing changed, too.

She’s also hungry. She’s rooting around, trying to get her thumb in her mouth. Stupid baby thinks there might be milk in her own thumb.

I have some stuff to make a bottle, but I really don’t want to screw with it right now. Instead, I just pick her up and take her back out to the man who wants to buy babies. Stevie, I think his name is. He sounds like a prick. He’s probably the kind of guy who stabs his best friends in the back without even thinking twice, the kind of guy who takes a job at a company, throws a baby fit over something, and then sues them….

He’s definitely the kind of guy who buys babies.

“Well?” I ask him. “I don’t have a lot of time to fuck around, so do you want this baby and the other two or not?”

“Where is she from? Is she just a peasant baby or–”

“No,” I say quickly, but I have to be careful. He might not want to buy the babies if he thinks they’re royals. But then, he doesn’t want loser babies either. “They’re from a good family.”

He raises an eyebrow. “And how did you get them?”

I shrug. “Doesn’t matter. You want them or not?”

He rubs his chin, thinking about it for a moment before he says, “I'll give you three hundred gold coins. That’s it.”

I swallow hard. That’s a lot of money. I hadn’t expected that much. I wonder if I can manage to get more?

I’m not going to press my luck, not with the Alphas closing in on me. “Fine,” I say with a sigh. “I’ll take it. I’ll go get the other two.”

“I’ll go with you,” Stevie insists.

I really don’t want him to see Astrid. I don’t want him to try and take her, too, but I concede with a nod. I’d rather have the Alphas chasing him than me.

“Fine.”

I strap the baby back to my chest because it’s easier to carry her that way, and I take him to that house I found in the woods where I stashed the baby.

Instantly, Stevie says, “But there are three more babies here.”

“I know. I’m keeping the other girl,” I tell him.

He raises an eyebrow at me. “You sure you wanna do that? You don’t want to just take the money and be done with it? I’ll have these babies on different trains going different directions in a matter of minutes, and whoever you got them from will never, ever see them again.”

I look down at her where she’s lying on the floor, her fist in her mouth as she looks up at me, wide-eyed. She’s not even crying now. It’s like she knows I’m her mama now.

“No,” I say quickly. “No, this one is mine.”

“Whatever,” he says. He hands me a bag of coins. I open it and look inside. They are all gold, so I assume they’re not counterfeit, but I can’t tell how many are in there or their value. I decide to just shove it in my pocket and go.

I split the supplies so that he has some milk and diapers and then help him strap the three little brats to his chest and back. They are already crying. It figures.

“Thanks,” I tell him.

“Yeah. But if you get caught, and you tell them about me, just know that I have a wide reach. One of my associates will hunt you down and kill you.”

“Don’t worry. If I get caught, I’ll already be dead,” I tell him.

He stares at me for a minute and then turns around and disappears. I hear the babies crying for a bit until he’s out of range.

Then, I sink down onto the floor and pick Astrid up. “Guess it’s just us,” I tell her. She says nothing.

I change her diaper and feed her a bottle. While I’m feeding her, I check the coins again.

“Holy fuck!” I mumble. There aren’t three hundred gold coins in here.

There are nine hundred! He meant apiece.

I look down at Astrid’s little face. “I should have fucking sold you, too.”

She begins to cry.
