Our search for Eli is going to have to wait a bit longer since Reece and I are a bit… busy. Both Kane’s and Stephen’s warriors are closer than we’d thought, and both of our armies are requesting our advice since we’re being attacked on two fronts.

I’m not worried about Stephen’s army since most of their warriors are far from disciplined, but Kane’s army is another story. At this point, Reece and I agree that we’ll dispose of Stephen’s shifters first so we can focus on the Kane threat. Eli’s warriors are still fighting them, but they need reinforcements—as well as a strong dose of morale boost since their Alpha is currently missing in action.

Reece and I have also decided that we are the answer. We need to make a personal appearance on the ‘Stephen army’ battlefield to give Eli’s troops a confidence boost. We’ve shifted and are running at full speed toward the fray, which is a little off course from the area we want to investigate to find Eli, but I know he’d want us to take care of his warriors in his absence. All the while, we’re multitasking in our mind-links to coordinate with our own troops and bring Tristan into the conversation.

‘It’s working,’ Reece says in my head as we run at top speed toward our destination. His idea to split up our armies to focus the right warriors on the right battle is going well. Kane’s army is organized and disciplined—but they’re also accustomed to fighting a traditional battle. We currently have Tristan’s entire army on that front, but they’re backed up by some of our most talented warriors for using special techniques to break through traditional war tactics, and they’re holding off Kane’s warriors for now.

On the other hand, we’ve put our fighters who are best suited for more traditional battle in front of Stephen’s people, who are so disorganized and lazy that they can’t get even a weak battle line together.

But as we arrive at the battle against Stephen, we can both see that Eli’s people are just… tired. Thankfully, we can communicate with them as Alphas even though we’re not their leader.

“Veer south!’ Reece commands them, letting me in on the mind-link so I’m aware of his tactic.

I can see the difference in the troops immediately as they straighten up, move in perfect synchronization, and seem to get a second wind. The Alpha voice is strong, especially in battle, which is why so many plans fall apart when an Alpha is killed or leaves the battlefield. The rest of the troops lose a part of themselves.

I look to my left and see that Cora, the warrior from Eli’s pack, is still keeping pace with me. Good. I need to keep an eye on her. Reece breaks off to join the troops he’s commanding, and Trevor moves up into his spot beside me.

Trevor still seems to have no clue that anything’s going on with Cora. But to me, it’s obvious that she’s a traitor. There’s something about Alpha senses that can practically smell betrayal, so I really don’t blame him for being ignorant about her. She’s being a pretty good actor.

‘Follow Reece,’ I tell Trevor, and he gives an almost imperceptible nod then takes off in that direction.

Cora is running beside me still; I know that right now she doesn’t want to give up her true intent, so with an Alpha around, she’s going to fight in battle just as hard as she normally would. I don’t give her any indication that I’m suspicious of her, even though Reece and I had had a long conversation with Tristan about her in the mind-link earlier.

We reach the first group of Stephen’s warriors, some stragglers who were too confused about Reece’s quick realignment to keep up. Cora, the guards who have accompanied us, and I make quick work of them and keep moving forward, essentially hitting them from behind as the rest of their army turns to deal with Reece and Eli’s warriors.

Pure adrenaline kicks in as one by one, I grab Stephen’s warriors by the neck and sink in my sharp teeth, the metallic taste of their blood flowing through my mouth. Had they not had a cruel, selfish man like Stephen as an Alpha, they may have been successful warriors. But Stephen is more interested in living a life of luxury than doing what’s right for his people, and it shows in the sheer lack of training these warriors display.

‘Stephen’s not here,’ says Reece in my head.

‘Of course he’s not,’ I say. ‘He’s a fucking coward.’

‘We’ve got them on the run anyway,’ he says.

‘Yeah,’ I say. ‘The ones back here aren’t even trying anymore. I’m going to order them to go home.’

In my strongest Alpha voice, I engage a mind-link directed at all of Stephen’s warriors—and I include Cora too. ‘There isn’t any use trying to move forward,’ I tell them. ‘Your leader is weak and selfish—he’s not even joining you, shoulder to shoulder on this battlefield! And why? It’s because all he cares about is himself, not you. You’re dying for no reason while he sits back in his castle enjoying his chef-prepared meal. Go home to your families and let your useless Alpha fight his own futile battles! Selfish people who betray the trust of others will always get their comeuppance!’

At that last sentence, I can feel Cora tremble a little beside me, but I pretend not to notice. Reece and Trevor run up beside us.

‘They’re retreating,’ says Trevor.

I nod in answer and talk to Reece privately in our heads. ‘She’s definitely a spy,’ I tell him.

‘I know,’ he says. ‘And I liked that last little dig.’

‘It bothered her,’ I say, ‘so she has a conscience. If we play our cards right, we’ll get her to tell us where Eli is.’

Then I engage a broader mind-link. ‘Trevor, regroup with your warriors and rest them. We’ll need backup on the front with Kane soon, so be sure they heal up and get some nourishment.’

‘Yes, Alpha Mark, Alpha Reece,’ Trevor says. ‘Thank you for giving my people the confidence they needed.

‘You’re welcome,’ I said. ‘But there are battles ahead. Alpha Reece and I are going to continue searching for Alpha Eli.’

‘Thank you, sirs,’ he says to both of us, then he turned to talk with his warriors.

Cora took a couple of steps to follow him, but I halted her in her tracks. ‘Cora, was it?’ I say, and she jumped a little.

‘Y—Yes sir,’ she says.

‘You’ll be assisting Alpha Reece and me in the search,’ I say. I know that being in the presence of two Alphas will make it harder for her to use her mind-link freely.

She has no choice, so she says, ‘Yes, sir.’

As we start running in the direction of Stephen’s territory where Eli was last seen, Reece and I exchange a knowing look.

Ugh, the begging and crying. I am so sick of it, and I’m praying for the peace and quiet I’d had earlier in this Goddess-forsaken dungeon.

But Queen Marcella just won’t fucking shut up!

“Can you DO something about that woman?!” I scream, hitting my hands against the bars for attention.

I guess the guard is sick of her, too, because he comes up to her cell and says, “Shut up!”

“Please, please, Mr.—what did you say your name was?” she says.

“I didn’t tell you my name,” he says impatiently. “But it’s Seymour.”

I furrow my brow. The man hadn’t let out more than a grunt to me in… however long I’d been here. And now here he’s introducing himself like he’s at a fucking tea party.

“Oh, Seymour,” she says. “That's such a lovely name.”

He smiled a bit—smiled!—and looked at the queen as if she’d just given him a medal. Maybe he was one of the older guards…. He could have been smitten with the queen at one point back when King Edward was in power. Maybe I can use this….

“Do you think that it would hurt if I could just give my Eddie a quick hug?” she says.

I swear the old bitch is batting her eyelashes. And it’s working!

“I don’t know…” he says hesitantly.

“Just a quick hug,” she says. “Just once.”

“Well, I don’t see what the harm would be in that,” the guard—well, I guess his name is Seymour—says.

I’m completely dumbfounded as I watch this idiot take out his keys and unlock the old bat’s cell door, then take her hand and lead her past my cell and up to King Edward’s cell. The old man smiles wide and takes her by the hand as they coo at each other for several minutes.

“Ed?” the queen says suddenly, her demeanor changing. “Ed, where are we?! Oh, my Goddess, where are we?!” Sudden panic rises over her face as she starts swinging her body around. I guess that brief moment of lucidity is over.

As she starts to run around in circles in a panic, the guard has a moment of panic of his own and grabs her. She fights him, and they take swings at each other back and forth until he finally throws her over his shoulder and hauls her back to her cell, and all the while the king is screaming at him to please be gentle with her.

What a bunch of useless drama. With the show over, I head to the back of my cell and get ready to lay down in my dirt indents when out of the corner of my eye, something just in front of my cell bars gleams on the dirt floor in the dim light.

It’s a hairpin.
