“All right, everything looks great,” Dr. Pennygasket says as she helps me sit up. I am wearing one of those incredibly flattering hospital gowns that is wide open in the back with a sheet over my lap. She’s pulled everything away from my protruding abdomen to check on my children. “I know the sexes now.”

“Don’t tell me,” I say, covering my ears with both hands. “I don’t want to find out without the Alphas.” I’m not even sure where they are, but Shelby, Adam, and Kelly have all told me not to worry about it. They say that all four of my men are fine and just went to check on something in another pack.

I feel uneasy about the entire thing, but I am trying to go on about my day. At least this time, no one is in the doctor’s office with me. I convinced both of my girlfriends to stay back in my room and wait for me there. I don’t want an audience anymore while I’m at the doctor’s unless it’s my men.

“So just keep drinking a lot of water so that you stay hydrated, keep up your activity level for now, and try to get enough rest,” Dr. Pentergastly tells me.

I nod. “All right, thank you, Doctor.” I am glad I’ll get to put my clothes back on soon. I really hate this hospital gown.

“You’re sure you don’t want to know what you’re having?” Both the doctor and the nurse behind her have twinkles in their eyes.

“No, I want the daddies to find out at the same time as me,” I tell her. I had seen all four of the babies on the little black and white plasma television when she was ultrasounding me, but I couldn’t tell how many legs they had. I was just glad when she said they were all healthy.

“All right. Take care, dear. And we’ll see you in a couple of weeks.” She smiles at me like I’m having her grandchildren or something, and I can’t help but smile back at her.

I get dressed and thank the nice nurse again as I walk out, though I see the mean one and return the glare she’s giving me. I don’t know why that woman hates me so much, but I am feeling empowered at the moment for some reason, so I don’t mind giving her the stink eye.

I walk back toward my room and see Shelby and Kelly waiting just down the hall from the infirmary. They look nervous, and immediately, a pulse of fear radiates through me.

“Is everything okay?” I ask.

They both nod. “Yes, the Alphas are all okay. Mark and Tristan are on their way back here now, but Reece and Eli will take a bit longer,” Kelly explains.

I have a feeling they’re not telling me everything, but I don’t say more. “Okay. Why do you both look so pale and bothered?”

Shelby clears her throat. “King Gene was looking for you a few moments ago,” she explains. “And I think he may be waiting for you in your room.”

I feel my pulse begin to race as I reach them, and Shelby takes my hand. “Why?” I ask.

‘We don’t know. He wouldn’t say, and Adam didn’t know,” Shelby replies.

“Where’s Emily?” I ask. What if she’s in there, too? What if he intends to hold me down while she stabs me through the heart with one of her stilettos?

“I think she’s gone from the castle,” Kelly explains. “Eli said that they’d sent her away with Alpha Stephen.”

“Well, what if she came back?” I question.

“We won’t let anything happen to you,” Kelly assures me.

I want to believe her, but we’re talking about two women and a pregnant lady who is already so big, I look like I swallowed a watermelon, versus a king and his bitch cousin who is dead set on killing me.

No, I don’t feel good at all.

When we reach my room, both ladies accompany me inside. I see King Gene sitting in the chair I normally sit in by the window, and it’s clear to me that he’s alone. If Emily were here, I’d smell her perfume. The king doesn’t even look over at us as we come in.

“It’s about time you got back,” he mutters. “You waddle like a fucking penguin.”

“She’s pregnant, Your Majesty,” Shelby counters, a tone of irritation in her voice.

He turns then, and looking at my friends orders, “Leave. Now.”

Both of them hesitate. “It’s okay,” I reassure them, taking a seat on the edge of my bed. “I’ll be fine.”

“We’ll be close by,” Kelly says, and I almost expect her to hiss at the king. But they both turn and leave, and I am alone with King Gene again, something I truly hate.

“You certainly have gotten bigger since the last time I saw you,” he remarks, stating the obvious.

My initial reaction is to tell him he looks shorter, but I say nothing. He is still the king, and none of my Alphas are here at the moment to protect me. I rub my stomach, willing my children to be safe from this evil man and reply, “How may I help you, Your Majesty?”

King Gene’s smile spreads across his face, the note of evil infused in it seeming to spread as well. “You know, you’ll be popping out those babies soon. In just a few short months, they’ll be crawling from your womb. Then… there will be no need for you in my castle anymore.”

I let the idea that he probably thinks that the babies will crawl out of me go, and nod my head. “Yes, Your Majesty, I am aware that once the babies are born, you think there will be no reason to keep me. But, I would like to humbly remind you that all children need their mother–not just any mother, but their own birth mother. They are smart enough to know the difference between any old woman who is just stepping in and their actual mother.”

He stares at me for a moment, like he’s not sure if what I’m telling him is the truth. “Well, these children will be babies still. And babies are dumb.”

I don’t know what he thinks I was trying to say. Babies are smart enough to know their mother, and that is the truth. I shake my head. “These babies will take after their fathers and be very smart.”

He swallows hard, like he hadn’t taken into account the fact that I will be needed still. He shakes his head. “I will not continue to tolerate you after the children are born. Hopefully, you will die while they are crawling out of you. But if you don’t, well, just don’t get too comfortable here, Breeder.”

Not wanting him to see that he’s gotten to me, I take a deep breath and ask him, “Where is your cousin, Emily? I haven’t seen her around recently.”

His gaze narrows on me. “Not here.” That’s all he says, and I know he won’t say more, so I don’t press him.

He stands now, and we are almost even in height with me sitting on the bed and him actually pulling his shoulders back and jutting his chin up. “Don’t get cozy.”

With that, he turns and walks out of my room, leaving me all alone.

But it doesn’t last long. Shelby and Kelly run into the room a few seconds later, and I am happy to see that Mark and Tristan are with them.

I’m not sure who to hug first, so I hug both of them. “What’s going on?” I ask. “Where have you guys been?”

“There was a minor problem back at your own pack,” Mark admits, and I know that he’s trying to be nonchalant. “But we took care of it.”

“And your parents are fine,” Tristan tells me, though he’s snarling almost as much as King Gene with the words, and I know he has met them.

“They’re lovely, aren’t they?” I ask, but he just shakes his head. “Where are Reece and Eli?”

“We were afraid Alpha Stephen might not be done with his tricks, so they stayed behind. We wanted to make sure the people in your village are safe since we assume that you care about them, but we also wanted to make sure that you were safe as well.”

“I’m fine,” I assure them. I’m glad that they are taking care of my pack despite my parents. Continuing, I say, “I don’t think that Emily is here.”

“She’s not,” Mark assures me as he smooths back my hair. “But that doesn’t mean she’s not a threat anymore.”

“And knowing King Gene, he’s not done with his shenanigans,” Tristan adds with an ominous tone.

A shiver goes down my spine as I figure he is probably right.

Back in my office, I think about that stupid bitch’s words, and I realize, without Emily here, I still need a Luna. I still need those bastard children to have a mother. I still need a queen.

Emily is not royalty material. She’s proven that to me time and time again. No, I need a strong woman, a smart woman, one who can meet these Alphas where they are.

I pull out my laminated guide to who is who in the kingdom and flip through. After a few minutes, my eyes settle on a beautiful face, and a smile curls up my lips.

I pick up the phone and begin to dial. A moment later, a feminine voice on the other end greets, “Shore pack. How may I help you?”

“Yes,” I say, thoughts racing in my head. “This is King Gene. I want to speak to Luna Barbara. Now.”
