*Tristan*

I don’t want to leave Rose’s side. Not now. Not ever.

But it’s clear to me that Alastor, whoever the fuck he is, is approaching Mark’s castle in full force, and it’s up to the three of us that are still here, as well as a large contingency from Eli’s pack, to fight him off.

I’m not really scared of him at all. As a matter of fact, I know that he’s severely outnumbered and essentially running to his death. But… we still have to fight.

So fight we will.

And when we are finished with him, Alastor will wish he’d never, ever heard of Rose, our pups, or any of the four of us.

The attack begins on the far left of our line where Reece and his wolves are positioned. I hear the other Alpha’s voice through the mind-link telling me that the attacking forces are not just warriors from Gene’s pack, but many of them are from neighboring packs as well.

That is a red flag in my head. Before, I assumed that we were just battling the few thousand warriors Gene would be able to scrape together after all of his recent battles, but if he had recruited warriors from neighboring packs, there’s simply no way for us to know how many wolves were actually charging at us.

Before I can even say anything to anyone else, about how unsettling this is, the battle is in front of me, and I don’t have a chance to do anything except for fight.

I am already in my wolf form, and I am larger than most of the wolves that are running at me, but I can see that many of them are elite warriors from other packs.

It seems quite clear to me that Gene truly has changed his mind about his initial plan to make the father of the first son Rose had into the Alpha King….

The line of warriors in front of me, from my own pack mostly, though a large section of Eli’s troops have been given to me to command as well, leap forward, ready for the fray. It’s difficult for me to stand back and wait, concentrating on giving them orders rather than fighting myself.

Right from the beginning, my fighters are sinking their teeth into the necks of the attacking wolves, and I want a piece of that, too.

I manage to keep my urges under control until I see a large wolf sauntering slowly forward through the tree line of the woods beyond the castle grounds. He’s massive, and judging by the shade of gray his fur has turned, he’s older, too, probably in his mid-to-late forties.

I want a piece of him. I have to think that this is the new Beta, that this is the guy that Gene has sent to attempt to wipe us out.

Right now, he’s not doing anything but observing, probably giving orders through the mind-link, sort of like I am, but I really want to taste his blood, so I find myself moving my line forward, advancing over the ground more quickly than I normally would so that I can get a piece of him.

It takes a bit of time, maybe an hour, an hour and a half, but we drive them back enough that when I finally jump into the fray, I can justify going right after their leader.

He’s not a true Beta, not born of a Beta, and therefore, he isn’t capable of initiating a conversation with me as an Alpha, but I can talk to whomever I want to, so when I stare him down and say, ‘What the fuck do you think you’re doing? Attacking the rightful king of Black Rock?’

He only grins at me, refusing to answer with words, and as I cross the rest of the land between us, his response is to launch himself at me first.

I lower myself to the ground, my knees bent, and as he takes up off the ground, aiming for my head, I am easily able to dodge him.

He isn’t deterred, though, as he gets up off of the ground and comes at me again, literally nipping at my heels. I spin around and face off against him, swiping at him and drawing first blood when I hit him in the upper shoulder.

‘I’ve lost quite a few warriors,’ I hear Reece say in my head, ‘but I think we are finally starting to turn them back.’

I’m shocked to hear that. My warriors have done so well here in the center of the line.

Mark reports, ‘Yes, I’ve lost quite a few as well, but I think we’ve been able to hold them off.’

‘Uhm… what the hell?’ I ask. ‘Did he send all of his fiercest warriors to the flanks because the middle of the line is holding strong.’

‘I don’t know,’ Reece says, ‘but there were a lot of them, and they were huge.’

My mind can’t focus on that right now as this massive wolf comes at me again. He comes at my neck this time. I slide down and but fall backward onto the ground, my spine landing on a rock. I don’t have time to let the pain sink in. I kick up with my legs, catching him, and sending him flying up and over my head.

He slams into a tree, and I hear the cracking of his bones.

Somehow, he manages to push up off the ground, and I am ready to go at him again, but then, I hear a voice in my head.

‘Wait, Alpha Tristan, please,’ the male voice pleads with me.

I look up and see a group of wolves approaching at a high rate of speed from the same direction where the attack came, but I know immediately these are not enemies–these are friends.

‘Wait?’ I ask, confused.

‘Yeah… I want a piece of him.’

I can’t help but chuckle as the large gray wolf is clearly giving orders to his men that have broken and are falling back. He has no idea what’s coming.

‘All right, he’s all yours,’ I say in my head. ‘Have fun… Adam.’
