*Adam*

The next day, I am still thinking about what Shelby told me the night before, and it’s bothering me.

I tried not to let her know it hurt me when she asked if I was afraid to die, if I was afraid to sacrifice myself for Rose and her children. While I don’t want to die and leave my wife a widow, of course, I know it’s my duty to protect those who are not strong enough to protect themselves.

I see the bigger picture here, just as my wife does.

But that doesn’t mean I am willing to sacrifice Shelby in place of Rose. No, my love for her would never allow me to do anything that would put her in jeopardy, even if she thinks it’s something she would want to do.

I can’t think about that and concentrate on all of the other day-to-day tasks I have at hand. As the pack Beta, I am literally the busiest person in the pack. The king doesn’t do much of anything himself, except to sit around and come up with evil schemes, apparently, so it is up to me to make sure that all of our subjects are doing what they’re meant to do–all two million of them.

I’m at my desk, looking over some reports that I care nothing about when one of the commanders enters my office, his feet hitting the floor at a quick pace. I set the papers aside when I see it’s Commander Berry, one of the men who's been put in charge of gathering information about Alpha Kane.

He makes the sign of respect to me, and I ask, “What’s the situation, Berry?”

“Sir, here’s the newest information from the front, from our troops between Kane’s soldiers and the area surrounding the castle.”

He hands it over, and I give it a quick look. My stomach twists. Kane is actually forming his line to advance on us.

He really is planning on attacking the castle. He’s only about ten miles from here now, and that means the newest movements he’s making are in preparation for war.

“Thank you, Berry,” I say, getting to my feet. “I’ll speak to King Gene and then let you know what our next steps are.”

He taps his left shoulder with his right fist again, showing respect, and then turns on his heels to leave. I follow behind him, going across the hall to King Gene’s office.

His door is closed, as if he is in a meeting, but even through the thick pine, I can hear who he’s speaking with, and it’s not important.

“And then that stupid bitch had the audacity to wear the same dress I’d worn the week before! To my party!” Emily is saying before she bursts out laughing.

I can’t hear King Gene’s response. Either there isn’t one, or it’s so quiet, it can’t be heard through the door.

I knock, thinking I should try that before using the mind-link. “Come!” the king shouts, and I walk in.

“Sorry to interrupt, sir, but–”

“You should be sorry!” Emily barks at me, folding her arms beneath her chest and pressing up so that her bosom sticks out the top of her low-cut gown. “What the fuck do you want, anyway, Beta?” She says my title like it means nothing.

I stare at her for a moment before I hand the correspondence I’ve just received to the king. “It’s urgent.”

He looks at it and then commands, “Emily, get out.”

“But–”

“Now!” He bangs his fist on the desk, and his cousin gets up, scrambling and muttering under her breath that I’m a nasty prick for making this happen.

“Shall I move our soldiers forward?” I ask the king.

He shakes his head. “Let’s get the Alphas in here. I want their opinions first. They’re the ones who came up with this plan of defense. I want to make sure this new information doesn’t change anything.”

“Yes, sir,” I say, and then I use the mind-link to call for the four Alphas.

Within a few minutes, all four of them are gathered in the war room, along with the king and me. It was a conference room just a few weeks ago, but now, King Gene has decided he needs an actual war room to go along with his potential actual war.

A large circle table sits in the center with several maps laid out and different pieces sitting on top of them to represent troops and that sort of thing. He thinks it makes him look official; I think it makes him look like a little boy playing with toys.

The five of them get right to the conversation, the Alphas doing their best to convince Gene that they assumed Kane would do exactly what he has done and Gene trying to figure out whether or not their plan is solid. I try to stay tuned in, but it isn’t the battle I’m thinking about.

No, my mind is only on the war for one reason–it can help me with another problem I have.

Perhaps this impending battle can be a distraction for King Gene, Emily, and whoever the hell else might be honing in on what’s going on with Rose.

Perhaps, if we all go to war, I can use that as an opportunity to sneak the breeder and her babies out of here….

“Adam? Did you hear me?” King Gene asks, and I try to tune in, but I’ve missed something important.

“Uh, yes, of course….” I stammer, trying to look at the map and figure out what he might’ve said.

In my head, I hear Mark’s voice speaking, ‘He wants to know if Commander Berry has ten thousand troops or eleven.’

I clear my throat. “Berry has ten thousand, five hundred of our best warriors at his disposal,” I say aloud as if I’d heard every word.

“Then that means we have the numbers,” King Gene continues.

‘Thank you,’ I tell Mark in my head.

He nods as if he is nodding along with the king, but his eyes are on me. ‘Is something troubling you?’ he asks me via the mind-link. “You haven’t been yourself lately.”

I want to tell him everything, but obviously now is not the time. ‘Just… busy,’ I say and try to force a smile.

He lets it go, and I try to focus on the conversation, but in the back of my mind, I want to go tell Shelby what I’m thinking….

Later, after dinner, I am pounding into my wife like a construction worker bound and determined to drive a steel rivet into an iron hull with only a hammer. She is holding onto the bed frame with one hand and the mattress with the other. I hope she is enjoying herself, but I can’t tell from the look on her face. Either she likes it or it feels like an anaconda is trying to bore through her center.

In my defense, I did tell her to brace herself before I started….

When I finally shoot my load, I am taxed. I collapse next to her, pouring buckets of sweat and breathing like I’ve just finished a marathon in two hours–in my human form.

It takes a bit for me to catch my breath, but when I do, I say, “I think we have enough of a distraction in the war that we should be able to get Rose away from here–somehow.”

“I’m sorry,” Shelby apologizes, pulling her nightgown down. “I might not have heard you correctly. I think I have spooge in my ears.”

This is her way of saying I was really ramming it in there….

“What do you mean we might have a distraction from the war?” she asks me. She is also glistening with sweat, but I think it is mine. She didn’t really have to do anything but lay there and let me do all of the work. Must be nice….

I’m sure she appreciates me being so selfless in the bedroom.

In response to her question, I say, “If there’s a war, at least some of the Alphas will likely have to leave the castle, at least for a little while. When they go out, they can take Rose with them, sneak her out of here.”

“But… how are they going to do that exactly if they don’t even know she’s in danger?” she asks me, with a look on her face that lets me know I’m about to contradict myself.

I groan. “We’ll have to tell them.”

“Oh, but we can’t do that!” she exclaims. “That will ruin everything! Those blabbermouths will go straight to their best friend, the king, and tell him everything and then watch as the king kills you, me, Rose, and their own children!”

“All right, all right,” I say, annoyed that she’s being so ferocious. “We will have to tell them. And I’m sure they won’t do what you just said.”

“What YOU thought they’d do?” she clarifies.

“Yes! I confess!” I shout. “But if we do tell them, do you think this could work? Is it the break we’ve been looking for?”

I study my wife’s face, praying she says she thinks it is.

Instead, she just says, “I have no fucking idea.”
