“I’m telling you, I don’t know about the woman nurse!” Al says, spitting blood out of his mouth onto the concrete floor of the dungeon.

I’ve always taken great pride in my dungeon floor being pretty clean, so I don’t appreciate it, but it’s not as if I can fully blame him.

I’m the one who has been punching him until his mouth bleeds, after all.

“She said you told her that I was going to starve the pack and take away all of the nice things that everyone enjoys in our pack lands because I’ll want it all for my baby, like that Alpha of old. She said you were the one spreading all of that information.” My fists are aching from the last time I punched him, but I am longing to do it again. I need to know who else might be working with him so that I can prevent any more mayhem from unfolding.

Al shakes his head, giving me a devilish grin. “I can see fear in your eyes, Alpha. It’s too bad you didn’t choose me to be your Beta, ain’t it? I coulda made sure that no one was able to hurt your pups.”

Even the words “hurt” and “pups” coming out of his mouth at the same time had me punching him again. I punch him so hard, his head hits the wall, and his eyes roll back into his head.

He’s unconscious.

“Fuck,” I mumble. I’m upset that I’d knocked him out without getting an answer.

And now I have no reason to keep punching him, which is perhaps the most irritating of all.

Just when I have given up any hope of getting to crush his skull some more, I look up to see one of my guards coming down the stairs, and the thought of it falls from my mind anyway.

That wasn’t me….

“Alpha, there’s a young woman here to speak to you. She says she’s from Miss Rose’s pack, sent by her parents.” The guard looks at me with hesitation on his face, as if he’s afraid I might explode at him.

My people are not used to seeing me this angry–and dripping with blood, not the ones who work in the castle, anyway. The warriors, of course, but not these people.

“Where is she?” I ask him. I’m leery of letting anyone walk into the castle at the moment since Al has nothing to tell me, and the nurse who’d been working with the babies doesn’t know anything she hasn't already told us.

She is still spending time in the prison anyway, though, for conspiring against Rose, the babies, and me.

“She’s in the library, sir.” He hurries away from me like I’m about to pound him, too.

I head up to the first floor of the castle and stop in a powder room to wash the blood off of my hands and see it has sprayed across my face as well. No wonder the guard who came to speak to me had looked at me like he was frightened.

I wash my face as well and then make my way to the room where the woman was waiting.

She isn’t what I’m expecting.

I walk in to find a young woman, probably about Rose’s age, with dark, curly hair, and a pleasant smile.

She stands and bows at the waist. “Sir,” she says, “Alpha Mark. It’s so nice to meet you.” Extending her hand, she says, “I’m Retta. Rose’s parents sent me.”

I take her hand and shake it, offering for her to reclaim her seat as I sit across from her. “I hope you’ll forgive my abruptness, miss,” I tell her, “but we’ve had some problems here at the castle with people trying to sneak in who shouldn’t be here.”

“Oh, no,” she says. “I’m very sorry to hear that. Well, I can assure you that Rose’s parents sent me, and they can confirm that over the phone, if you’d like. Also, Rose knows me. We went to school together.”

I arch an eyebrow at her. “That’s odd. Rose never mentioned you before. The two of you were friends?”

Her face reddens as she shakes her head. “No, I wouldn’t say that. Rose was the Alpha’s daughter, so it was a bit difficult for most of us to approach her. What with her being… so beautiful, and in a different social class than us, and all of that. I wanted to be friends with her, but I didn’t think I was worthy.”

What she is saying seems believable to me, so far. “Why are you here, exactly? Just a representative from your pack?”

“No, Alpha, sir. On the contrary. I’m here because my Alpha and Luna wanted someone they could trust to keep an eye on the babies, and because I am now a trained pack healer. I hope that I can be of assistance to Miss Rose and the pups.” She smiles prettily at me, and I feel like perhaps I can believe her.

But there is only one way to tell.

“I suppose I can take you to Rose, and she can let me know whether or not she wants you to stay. It’s not as if she and her parents get along.”

Her eyebrows furrow. “No, I didn’t realize that, but that’s very sad. I had no idea she was having trouble with her parents.”

That makes me arch both of my brows. “Really?”

She shrugs. “Well, the family always put on a united front, you know? They wouldn’t want anyone to know if they weren’t getting along.”

That makes sense to me as well.

I have a lot of important matters to tend to, especially now that I suspect there are more spies in our midst. “I’ll take you to Miss Rose,” I tell her. Standing, I gesture for her to follow me, and then I head to the room where Rose and the pups are.

She’s asleep, with Tristan resting in a chair on one side of her and Reece holding his daughter on the other side, rocking her.

The moment we enter, Tristan is fully awake. “Who is she?” he barks, waking Rose.

“She’s from Rose’s parents’ pack,” I explain. “At least… she claims to be. Rose, do you know her?” I ask.

Rose stares at Retta long and hard before she says, “Yes, I know her all right.”

I hold my breath. Maybe I shouldn’t have brought the woman here after all.
