“Thank the Goddess,” I say. Cars are headed toward us on the horizon, and Eli has already received confirmation that they’re Mark’s warriors. They’ve come to meet us in some decent cars that won’t fall apart on the highway like this piece of shit is threatening to do with every turn. At least now Eli can make it to Rose in time.

As they approach, I see that there are two cars, and one is a lot closer than the other. As it gets near, I can see why—it’s a two-seater sports car, and it looks really fast.

Eli slows our van as we work out logistics. Obviously, the sports car is here for Eli so that he can get to Rose as fast as possible. I’d love to be there when the babies are born, but it’s much more important that he get there on time. I probably wouldn’t be in the birthing room with four Alphas taking up space anyway, so I’ll wait until everything is done and the babies are brought out for me to see and hold.

I could just go with Eli and have one of us drive, but that car looks like a lot for me to handle and honestly, Eli shouldn’t be driving anymore. The closer we’ve gotten to Rose, the more nervous he’s become. I guess that’s typical of an expectant father, and I think it’s kind of cute, but he really needs to get there in one piece. Whoever’s driving the car right now looks like he knows what he’s doing, so I’ll just let him get Eli to the maternity ward on time.

After a bit of discussion, Eli brings the van to a stop and jumps out just as the sports car reaches us. He doesn’t waste any time hopping in, then the driver speeds off. I guess the babies are arriving sooner than we thought. I hope he makes it on time.

That leaves me with Heather, Eustace, Brent, and Sean. There’s only one other car, and it’s still headed down the highway.

“I’d better drive ‘er in,” says Eustace, nodding his head toward the driver’s seat of our old van. I doubt the thing will make it back to their pack without falling apart or running out of gas, so I suppose we’d better let him follow us back to Mark’s pack to regroup and maybe get the poor thing fixed properly.

As the car pulls up beside us, we see that there are only three seats.

“Heather, you come with me,” I say. “Brent and Sean, do you want to go with Eustace or ride shotgun with us?”

“I’d better go with Eustace,” says Brent. “I don’t want him getting lost or stranded out here.”

“Me, too,” says Sean, “unless you’d feel more comfortable if I ride with you.”

I shake my head. Eli has already verified that these are Mark’s people, so I trust them completely. “You guys go ahead,” I say.

“I’m kind of attached to this old van,” says Sean. “I’d love to see her make it on her own.”

Guys are strange. I laugh and shake my head to express that thought, then climb into the back seat of the car as the boys take off in that raggedy van. It’s going surprisingly fast; I guess they’re trying to compete with the sports car. Men, good grief.

I’m fastening my seatbelt and look up to see that Heather is still outside, wide-eyed.

“Heather?” I ask. “What’s wrong?”

“I just… I just ain’t never seen nothin’ as nice as this before,” she says. Apparently, she’s impressed with the car. It is a pretty nice luxury sedan, and the seats are the most comfortable thing I’ve been in for a long time, so I’m a little impressed as well, I suppose.

I laugh. “Heather, you lived in a luxury resort,” I say. “There were plenty of nice things there.” It was true, although most of those nice things were pretty old and run-down. But they were still nice. “Hop in.”

She finally snaps out of it and steps inside.

“I’m Chris,” says the driver. “What say we get you ladies to your destination?”

I nod. “We’re ready!”

The ride is smooth as we head down the highway, and I look out the window, enjoying the view. The sun is setting out on the horizon, and the rolling hills are taking on a pinkish hue, with golden rays of the last hint of sunlight filtering through soft, fluffy clouds. It’s a beautiful scene, and it’s ideal to set the mood for what’s ahead. Rose is safe, the babies are being born, and I’m confident that Eli will get there in time to witness the first seconds of his journey into fatherhood. Everything is perfect.

But then my head juts sideways suddenly, crashing into the window at the same time that Chris yells, “Oh, shit!” from the driver’s seat.

I hear Heather scream, followed by the sound of breaking glass and crunching metal as the entire car flips over. I try to reach over to hold her, but I can’t even control my own body as the car continues to flip.

We finally come to a stop, and I strain to move my head to see if Heather is okay. She’s moving and moaning, but Chris looks bloody, hanging halfway out of the front windshield. And he’s not moving at all.

I try to get my bearings. Somehow the car has landed upright after who knows how many flips, but the space inside is noticeably smaller from the twisted metal. I undo my seatbelt and try to scoot over closer to Heather to check her out better, unfastening her seatbelt as well so we can get out of the car, if it’s even possible to open the doors.

My head is pounding, and I’m just reaching for the door latch when I see movement outside. The door opens before I can get it done myself. At first, I’m relieved. Someone must have seen the accident and stopped on the highway to help us.

But that quickly fades away as I hear Heather scream. I look over to see her being pulled roughly out the door on the other side, then I suddenly feel someone yanking on my arm while some sort of cloth is yanked over my head.

I start to shift but don’t get the chance to get into my wolf form as I feel a prick in the side of my neck, and the world quickly goes black.

*Adam*

“You called for me, Your Majesty?” I ask. It’s an understatement because he’s been screaming at me for the last fifteen minutes, which is how long it takes to jog from my room to his quarters. Well, he was actually mind-link screaming, but that can be even worse because it always gives me a sharp, pounding headache.

“Adam!” he bellows as I jog up to him in the hallway. “It’s about fucking time, you incompetent idiot! You’re fired!”

“I… what, Your Majesty?”

“I said, you’re fucking fired! I have a new Beta, one who’s going to get the fucking job done right!”

“Job….” I say, and then I catch sight of the man standing beside King Gene.

I’ve seen him around the castle, but I hadn’t looked twice at the man before. Now that he’s standing right in front of me, I examine his demeanor. Something isn’t quite right, and I can’t put a finger on it at first. He looks normal enough, even friendly in a way, completely relaxed and confident as he stands to his full height next to the king, making Gene look like some sort of child’s toy in comparison.

But when I look into his icy blue eyes, I see it—a cold, calculating intent that sends a chill down my spine.

“Yes, you fucking idiot,” says Gene, and I just notice that he’s still talking. “I hereby officially fire you as my Beta and appoint Alastor Dravenwolf as Beta of Black Rock to assist me as I rule the kingdom!”

I’m in complete shock and just stand here, staring at these men. Gene walks away, and I can see a light smirk pass over Alastor’s face as he turns and follows behind him. I’m left standing there in the hallway, realizing that my mouth is still open. I close it and follow quietly, standing next to the door they’ve just entered, the king’s private suite.

“Fucking moron,” Gene says. “Glad to be rid of him. Now, you’re clear on your first assignment, are you not? These Alphas and their spawn are a threat to my crown, and the longer they breathe the same air as me, they’ll interfere in my role as the rightful rule.”

“Yes, Your Majesty,” says Alastor.

Hearing his haunting voice for the first time restores the chills throughout my body I felt earlier .

“Good then,” says Gene. “The four Alphas, the breeder, and all of those miserable Alpha-spawned brats that are crawling out of her—kill them all.”
