Knowing that Rose is okay is a huge relief, and I’m glad that Tristan is with her keeping her safe. I can’t believe that idiot Adam can’t even manage to hold it together for a few minutes to guard a pregnant woman. I wonder what will happen when Shelby gets pregnant. He’ll lose his mind for sure.

I’m worried about my brother, but I know he’s in good hands with the Alphas backing him up. And whatever’s happening out there on the battlefield, it’s going to feel like a game of Go Fish compared to what he’s going to go through when I get my hands on him. Not only is he worrying me, but he just about sent Rose into pre-term labor with worry.

When he gets home alive, I swear I’m going to kill him.

It’s times like these when I wish I had a sister. I thank the Goddess for Rose and Shelby. With all the men around here, I think I’d go nuts without some refreshing, sensible girl interaction.

But there’s one more girl—or I guess woman—that I need to find right now, and that’s Queen Marcella. If it hadn’t been for Adam’s freak-out moment, I’d know exactly where she is right now. But instead, I’m stuck roaming these seemingly endless hallways because she’s clearly not where we left her.

In our rush to get to Rose, we didn’t close the door to the little room the queen had been in. It had been open before, and it looked like the lock had rusted out, but maybe she’d have at least stayed put if the door had been closed. As it was, she’d left her rocking chair empty in the upstairs room, and it was still rocking creepily when I went to look for her.

I’ve been down several hallways now, and there is no sign of her. The further I go into the labyrinth of hallways, the darker it gets, so it takes a lot of concentration to keep my wolf eyes focused and keep my senses of hearing and smell sharp. I’ve picked up her scent a few times, but it’s odd because I keep losing it as I wind around a corner here and there.

I turn another corner and catch a glimpse of light from way down the hallway, so I head toward it, thinking that maybe it’s where the queen went through a doorway. As I finally approach, I see that it’s a crack where a doorway has been recently opened and not closed completely.

And I hear talking.

My breathing and my footsteps freeze at the same time when I hear King Gene’s voice, and it seems like he’s yelling at someone. I use the louder hollers as an opportunity to cover up the sound of my footsteps and get closer, and I lean my back against the wall just left of the crack in the door.

“Fucking incompetent morons!” he’s yelling, and I don’t hear anyone answer back. He yells out a few commands, and I hear footsteps leaving. I’m sure those servants are more than thrilled to get away from that asshole. He mumbles something about his food—so they must have made his dinner wrong or something. I instantly feel sorry for the servants and hope that they don’t have to be around the grumpy king very often.

“Seymour!” he yells next.

Who is Seymour? I’d never heard that name before. Gene keeps talking, and I get the feeling by the way he’s only saying half a conversation that he’s talking aloud in a mind-link instead of just doing it in his head. It’s an odd way to mind-link, but I’m glad for it since I hear the conversation. The gist of it is that he’s taken an old lady to the dungeon.

The queen!

“Adam!” I hear him hollering next, and once again I hold my breath.

I don’t know where Adam went after he left Rose’s room, but apparently, he’s keeping an eye on the king while the Alphas are away. That’s good. Maybe I was too hard on him about the Rose thing. He’s definitely trying to help.

“Yes, Sire,” Adam says.

“Why the fuck aren’t you calling me Your Majesty?” Gene says with a roar.

“Well, Si—Your Majesty, I apologize, but with Alpha Tristan temporarily on the throne, I’ve been giving the title to him,” Adam says meekly.

“Who gave you the right to give away my title! I am the king!” Gene yelled at him again.

“Yes, Your Majesty,” Adam says. “It won’t happen again.”

“Good!” shouts the king. “Now, where are you on your killing assignment? I give you one thing to do, and you botch the whole damn thing.”

“I—I haven’t botched it, Your Majesty,” says Adam. “I haven’t had the opportunity.”

“Well, obviously you have screwed up since that pregnant Breeder is still fucking breathing.”

“I—I’m sorry, Your Majesty,” Adam says. “Miss Rose is constantly guarded.”

“Well, my men saw the Alphas leaving, or at least some of them,” says Gene. “So who the fuck is guarding her now?”

“Alpha Tris—” Adam stops himself mid-word, realizing the mistake he’s made.

My blood boils, and it’s all I can do to keep myself quiet. I try to reach the Alpha through the mind-link, hoping that since he’s an Alpha it will work. ‘Alpha Tristan?’ I ask.

I get no answer, just dead silence. Either it’s not working from my end or Tristan is so busy he’s tuning me out. What in the Goddess’s name are Rose and Tristan doing in there?

I decide that the only way to warn them is to just run for it. We have to keep Gene from regaining the throne while the Alphas figure out how to overthrow him for good. I take a last deep breath and start moving, but instantly I trip on something on the dark floor. I fall forward and barely catch myself, letting out an audible gasp.

“What the fuck was that?!” Gene hollers.

I can’t stand up fast enough before I see his shadow approach the crack in the door. But I can’t let him know that I overheard anything he just said, or I’ll be in the dungeon myself—if not worse. I roll over sideways and plaster my body against the wall, sucking in my breath as if that will make me thinner and harder to see.

I close my eyes so that he won’t see the whites of my eyes in the dark and hold my breath. Gene’s labored breathing echoes slightly in the dark hallway as he pokes his face up to the door. I don’t hear a creak, so he probably didn’t open it more than the crack, but I keep quiet, nonetheless.

“Fucking idiots didn’t seal this doorway,” he says with a grunt, and he slams it shut.

I let out all my air and suck in a deep, stale breath as I pull myself up. My leg hurts a little, but I need to race back to Rose’s room to warn Tristan to get out. The task would be easier if the hallways didn’t meander in every direction, so I focus in on my sense of smell to pick up my own scent and find my way back.

I ignore the ache in my knee as I break into a run.

I’m hoping it was Alpha Tristan who was in the secret passageway just now. He’ll be pissed off at me for blurting out his name, but at least he’ll know what Gene is up to.

This is one of those moments when I’m thankful for Gene’s small strides, and I’m trying to keep my own in sync so that it takes forever to get back to Rose’s room. Hopefully, Alpha Tristan will be gone by then.

The king has a broad smile on his face as though he’s about to triumph in war. I suppose it is a war of some sort since our ultimate goal is to remove him as king and have a real Alpha—or four—run the kingdom the right way.

I can’t believe I’ve been stuck as Gene’s Beta, doing his bidding while he lets the whole kingdom go to shit. The people of this kingdom are proud and powerful, and they need an Alpha who is up to the task. I can’t believe his father abdicated the throne to Gene.

Along the way, I try to stall for time, stepping in front of Gene’s feet or asking questions of a servant. I can tell Gene is getting impatient, but I’m doing my best to hold him back hoping that Alpha Tristan can somehow get out of there. I’ve been trying to reach him in the mind-link, and he hasn’t been answering, and I can’t imagine why that would be. He’s supposed to keep channels open to hear about Alpha Eli, but I suppose Alpha-to-Alpha channels are a little different than Beta-to-Alpha communications, especially since I’m only his Beta temporarily.

I hope I’m the real Beta for all four Alphas very soon.

King Gene’s mind has been faltering lately, so I use another approach to try to distract him. “So,” I say, “When’s the party?”

It works—a little—because he stops in his tracks and looks at me. “Party?” he asks.

“Yes,” I say. “I’m sure you’ll want to throw an extravagant party to welcome you, Your Majesty, back to the palace.”

“Oh,” he says. “I suppose I do. You handle that.” He waves his hand at me dismissively and resumes walking, this time at a faster pace.

Well, that didn’t work.

It isn’t long before we round the corner to the hallway that leads to Rose’s room. “Well,” I say as loudly as I possibly can, “King Gene, here we are at the Breeder’s room!”
